  1. Amen to that! So far, the only filler I've used that will stand up to rescribing is Medium CA, and I really don't like using that because it's so hard to sand if you wait too long after hitting it with kicker.
  2. Thanks for the tip. I use the alcohol for rubbing out/smoothing Mr. Surfacer. I'll certainly try it with the Acryl Blue.
  3. Thanks to Mark I now see that the parts from the Airfix kit aren't what I need. Looks like a bit of scratch building is in order.
  4. I'm just now stumbling across this build thread, but WOW, what a nice job! I just scored an OA-4M from another modeler here on ARC and this has really inspired me. I'm actually looking at doing a similar project with that same scheme. I will have to explore how you did your decals. Thanks for sharing this with us. Stew
  5. Says page was not found when l click on the link.
  6. The F-4 wheel paradigm has been set! Thanks for bringing that to our attention Sergei! Now I know where to go for my Rhino wheels!
  7. That's taking panel line re-scribing to the extreme!
  8. Hey gang. I ran across an old 1/48th scale ESCI kit of the Fiat G-91 and the Portugese Tiger Meet decals have captured my attention. Tried buying them from the manufacturer in Portugal (Carpena Decals) but something is getting lost in the translation. I can't get past the order request. Does anyone know of a US distributor or have an extra set. This is a screen shot of the 1/72nd scale sheet, but like I said, I'm looking for 1/48th. http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/ISL/...48100/48100.htm Thanks, Stew
  9. I'm with you, Mark. I have a few select 1/32nd subjects, but 1/48th is my primary forte - (happy median of cost/size/space requirements, ability to see/hold parts...thanks to presbyopia and carpal-tunnel syndrome). However, this new 1/32nd scale Jag is a BEAUT. Man, wouldn't it be spectacular in that colorful Jaguar Farewell scheme? Stew
  10. PM sent on the 1/48th Hasegawa F-18E & F, the Grand Phoenix Fury, and the Monogram OA-4M.
  11. Don't even want to think what their PB4Y-2 Privateer conversion would fetch on E-Bay these days. I hear one sold some time ago for $600.
  12. If you really need that many, why not mold/cast your own? That way, you could make as many as you want.
  13. Kinda hard to tell anything from the pics provided. Is this an all-new tooling or a revision of an existing kit? What variant will it represent? Price point USD? I really like the Mirage they did, so I hope it's along that line.
  14. Beautiful work! Would be nice to see those B-26 decals in 1/48th, though.
  15. I haven't used Bondo, but I do use 3M Acryl Blue glazing putty with great success. I can really sand to a feather edge with it, and over a variety of materials (resin, styrene, brass). Right up there with the 3M is Tamiya putty, but it hard to find around here. My only gripe against the 3M and the Tamiya is that it skins over and starts drying way too fast. I usually have to use a bit of lacquer thinner to thin it down to a workable consistency and then only cover small areas at a time. FWIW, Testors red putty is 3M Red glazing putty and Squadron green putty is the 3M green putty - both deve
  16. Thanks guys. Interesting points, but I do know that I have seen pics of camo birds in formation. So, perhaps when the Luftwaffe first got the Sabres, the were NMF, and then later their specs changed - kind of like when our air force went from NMF to white/gray, to SEA camo. I've seen F-104's in all three paint scheme's depending upon the time frame. Still, a majority of the pictures I have found attributed as Hartmann's CL-13/F-86 show JA-111 in the natural metal finish. Now to nail down the kit...
  17. I finally got my hands on a Zvezda 1/144 scale 767! The odd thing is that I couldn't get it though my usual channels - Squadron or Sprue Brothers, despite the fact that they carry the new 787. I find that strange. I ended up getting it from Tower Hobbies at a very attractive price. I understand that Tower (Great Planes) is the new importer for Hasegawa kits as well. It kind of makes me wonder, though. Back in my R/C flying days, Great Planes had this nasty habit of not only becoming the sole importer, but also the sole seller of some items through their retail outlet - Tower Hobbies. Eather w
  18. I had the same problem with a lawn at the first house I owned. No two blades of grass/weeds the same species! Ugh! Seeing as I was going to dig trenches all over to install a sprinkler, here's what I did: 1 - Take a soil sample and send it to your county extension agency to have it tested for what nutrients it is lacking. At some point you will need to amend the soil with whatever the soil is lacking. 2- Kill the whole cotton-pickin thing with Round up or a broadcast grass killer. May need multiple applications. 3- Broadcast whatever fertilizer, manure, lime, etc, that the extension agency
  19. Fast forward to June 10th. I have managed to re-sharpen the Trumpeter tool and it works OK, but not as well as it did new. I just can't seem to get the angle of the blade carved down correctly. If this is typical of Trumpeter quality control, then I have to say that I am disappointed. I'm going to try buying one more to see if it holds up. I'm also going to try the Tamiya example. Hope I get a good one (Trumpeter) the 2nd time around. Stew
  20. Filter's only catch particulates, not the solvent fumes, unless of course you have a VOC filter in the booth, which few do. Most hobby paint booth's use A/C furnace filters, which don't filter out the fumes. Always a good rule of thumb to vent outside and use mask respirator with VOC can filters.
  21. A sad state of affairs all around. My home state (Louisiana) and the surrounding Gulf Coat region provides at least 30% of the seafood consumed in America and 30% of the oil. As they say back home, as the oil business goes, so goes Louisiana. When oil hit bottom in the mid 80's, jobs were hard to find and as a young adult just finishing college, finding a good paying job meant leaving my home state. Now I see the damage being done to an already struggling coastal marshland, and it makes me sick. In South Louisiana, we didn't hate oil or the oil companies, but there is an expectation of respons
  22. If you prefer enamels, Model Master makes a "Russian Topside Green" that would work for the darker color.
  23. I snagged a set of Luftwaffe Canadair Sabre decals at ScaleFest in Dallas this weekend. I thought I was buying markings for Erich Hartmann's bird, but allas, it seems he flew JA-111, not JA-104 (decal subject). Still it does have the black tulip on the nose. So here are my questions: If Hartmann did indeed fly JA-111, then who flew JA-104 (The decal sheet doesn't say)? I've seen markings for what apparently are Hartmann's Sabre, but some pics show a silver bird and others show a camo bird. Which one did he fly (or did he fly both?). Thanks ahead of time. Stew
