Could you modify an ALQ-131 pod?

The "ALQ" designation does not make it similar in any way. The AN/ALQ-131 has a rectangular shape and is different in practically every single way. None of the 'add-on' AN/ALQ pods would be useful.

Niels, I can see if I can find a drawing of it. It seems to me I have seen such drawing once, but I will have to check my references. Either way, it should be easy to make it yourself.

Correct that the kit does have the molded in belly strap because they reused the slatted wing from the F-4G release, which all had the strap because they were converted from earlier airframes that were retrofitted.  That said the belly strap is correct for the kit decal option, 68-0338, because the internally strengthened wing didn’t appear until 72-0121 from what I’ve read.  There was an interim group of Block 50’s (71-0237 thru 71-1402) that were delivered from the factory with slats, but they were modified on the production line with retrofit kits and therefore had the strap.  So, 71-0237 was the first factory slatted wing F-4E, but the first F-4E without the strap was 72-0121.  I believe TISEO began being fitted during the Block 50 production, and at least some of the factory retrofitted slat wing Block 50s had TISEO, and the strap.  ARN-101 was a later mod (late 1970’s?) and I’m not sure what blocks it was retrofitted to.

    Confused yet?

If you really want to get down into the weeds, the ejection seats in the kit more closely resemble Navy style seats than Air Force seats because Z-M uses the same common sprue in all of the F-4 kits.

    Thanks for the heads-up.
The interesting thing is that the MENG F-4E has decals for two FY71 airframes, but MENG failed to provide the TISEO. The ARN-101 is there though.

Actually, TISEO and the ARN-101 antenna are in the kit on the new “O” sprue added for this boxing, just marked “not for use”

    You're right!
I believe the issue was that the wings have the reinforcement strap/belly strap, and the TISEO/ARN aircraft are reinforced from within. Isn't that right?

  4. Despite Z-M naming it a 'late' F-4E, ít really is more of a mid-F-4E. The kit lacks the TISEO and ARN-101 of late F-4Es, so you have to look for FY67-69 airframes if you want a correct F-4E. The USAFE Phantom sheet should contain some FY68 airframes as they were present in USAFE too.

SCOUT712 is correct, the kit wings are the thick type, so you can only build one of the last 10 (12?) RF-4Bs out of the box, but it’s perfect for an RF-4C.

    ...

You are right in stating that only the last TEN (10) RF-4Bs had the thicker/bulged wings. Unfortunately many references mention 12 - probably from the same incorrect source.

Did any/all of your Block 1/5/10 airframes get the MLU update?  It's my understanding MLU was only done to Block 15 jets - or earlier blocks that had already been upgraded to Block 15 specs.

    .

All our (i.e. Danish) F-16A/Bs got the Mid-Life Update.
Some of our F-16s are rather block 50-like now with l/e beer cans, reinforcement plates and HG-like finish.

But most of the Danish F-16 DID receive the larger tailplanes at some point...

No, they did not! All our block 1/5/10 airframes retained the smaller stabs.
Also, the stab upgrade had nothing to do with MLU.

The SAM Publications "Comprehensive Guide" (from the "Modeller's Datafile" series) is a decent source of general color photos but the modeling info is limited and the factual accuracy, especially in captions, is less than stellar. I would say ir's worth consideration but only if you can find a copy for no more than $15 or so.

Added to that is the fact that some of the photos appear more than once in the book, and some are photoshopped to look different to previous ones.
