    Not knowing all the details I can think of three scenarios as to why the gun fired;

     

    1) Maintenance Malpractice - the maintainers screwed up and didn't follow procedures.

    2) The gun failed to clear after last firing and the ground crew failed to ensure the gun was cleared prior to performing maintenance.

    3) The gun failed to clear and EMI (stray) voltage got into the electrical system causing one round to fire. (seen this happen back in 91 to a Tomcat at Oceana)

     

    Bottom line, someone screwed up royally and this wasn't a "oops, my mistake" kind of thing.

     

     

    As to #1, yeah If you don't have the gun safe pin in its malpractice or it is intentional.

    #2 Safing pin should have been inserted...Now I have seen the pin get forgotten because some crewchiefs prefer the streamers to be short short short... kinda like the shorts on the juicy monsters and bar girls when on TDY. And I have seen a few who prefer to have the streamer stored inside gun purge door, with no streamer dangling in the breeze...

    So one other thing I want to know is \was it 1 round or many?

    1 round  electrical discharge. maybe ... high enough shock can initiate the single round , but not many as the gun is hydraulically spun.

    Still falls back to Intent IMHO, If it was One shot then the guy was an accidental sniper.. One Shot One Kill...

    One thing we don't know is if this was maintenance because of a failed or aborted flight.  If so they may not have gotten the ammo cleared.  I still would like to see where the aircraft that fired was located,  as some of the pics were showing at first made it seem that the bird was in the Hangar. but that seemed a bit off, there should not have been anything live on the bird.
    I worked a few jets that were live for the gun but we had the carts removed from the TER so the 500# wouldn't be a tempting thing to play with on the ramp for a redball. But they still had the safing pin inserted.

     

    I can say that it does take a lot of steps to do this.  I had to get Weapons out to assist with a broke jet because of a faulty cannon plug on the gun, and I needed their assist to fix the jet that they swore was an avionics job.

    It takes a lot of effort to accomplish this though.

     

    Not that tough to do. All you need are the following steps to be accomplished..

    1 Gun Safe Pin removed.

    2  Pull Probe Heat Circuit Breakers. Electric and Air on jet, run Safe For Maintenance as well as setting up the switches for the steps later.

    3 Hydraulics on jet.

    4 Pull NLG Wow Circuit Breaker and MLG Wow Breakers  that way the FCC (Fire Control Computer) is able to go ahead and work like it is in flight.

    5 Select the gun from the MFD's and all associated systems have to be up n running.

    6 if you have all the steps needed to get the system up n running as well as the AGE equipment up and running. All you have to do, is Pull the trigger.

     

    Any Avionics troop is able to follow the checklist and job guides to do just this, Ive worked on many F-16's where our Ops Checks required all these and many other steps.

    The Main step that shows a willingness to cause destruction is accomplishing step 1

    Similar to y'all Ive set mine into Ziploc bags based on what they are, nosecones/ radomes, landing gear, antennas, canopies, pylons... etc

    all of these went into a large plastic container that wasn't about to get bumped to the floor.

     

    Next one I do will be probably a set of filing cabinets so I can keep them out of sight and off the workbench.

    Id recommend going the arduino rout instead.

    mainly due to customization.

    I bought a nano to use on my cutaway USS Enterprise to control the Bussard lighting nav lighting as well as other strobes.

    Jay believe me it has a lot of potential, however there are so many areas that need to be worked around.

    Main issue is how to light the saucer section while having the ability to reattach the other half of the saucer and allow lights to function.

    Thinking magnets and maybe small pin connector.

    As to the secondary hull, I'm going to just cut the small section that is supposed to hold the port warp nacelle and keep it attached and structurally sound with the pylon permanently attached wiht the majority of the section visible.

    The Starboard nacelle I need another full dome for the Bussard collector as that half dome is a bunch of poodo.

    So.. I think this will be an interesting build here...

    Wow,

    Went to Colonial Photo and Hobby and all I can say is that that place almost had me walking out like a pauper.

    Bought some decal film several WW1 1/72 kits and some Perfect Plastic Putty.

    Almost walked out with several new eyepieces for my telescope as well as the New Nikon p900.

    but I hadda double check the p900's stats.

    Love the magnificent zoom and the small size But no RAW or NEF to shoot so it wont happen.
