Thanks for sharing this unique collection with us! While I especially like the heavies, the fighter collection is pretty cool, too.

Thank you all for your prompt and helpful information.
Stephen - This is a very intriguing load, can you confirm that it was VA-55, or at least the Mediterranean in 1986? I can imagine the explaining I'd have to do putting this one down on the club or even a contest table, explaining that yes, this was for real.
A6BSTARM - The ship killer look is what I'd prefer to go with, as my decals have the exploding frigate mark. You mention the Harpoons and CBUs; does the load Stephen mentions sound plausible?
Jari - I had photos of Hornets from this operation with the APAM, but never knew the significance of the lightning bolt! I also did some Defenceimagery searches, and found an A-6E escorting a Bear. Maybe it was carrying an AIM-9? I can imagine the confusion of Ivan in the Bear looking at the ungainly attack jet shadowing him. I think I'd be a little insulted that the USN couldn't send a Tomcat, or at least a Hornet!
Ryan - I re-read your message, Mk. 83 with high-drag fins! That's a bomb you don't see modeled too often. I think I may have two in an old Italeri weapons set (1/72), I'll need to check. Do you recall what the config is on a MER for two 1000 pounder? As far as 16 x 500 lb, would this be four MERs in a slant four config, with the inboards empty? I know I've seen a lot of photos with A-6's rocking the slant four, esp. inboard.
Thanks again. You all have given me a lot to choose from!
-
Thanks, Ryan! I take it the pylons not carrying MERs (inboard and centerline) would have tanks or be empty?
The book looks a little pricey. Does it have pictures from this timeframe?
-
Greetings, all-
Since I know this forum is the font of all wisdom , I thought I should ask here. Can any of you point me to pictures or references for A-6E loadouts from the Prairie Fire/El Dorado Canyon Ops in the Spring of '86? I am building a jet from this time, and would like it to have something appropriate under the wings.
Thanks!

Feel free to "waste" your time sharing these as often as you can. Great work! I love it!

Still working, but nothing worth taking photos of. This kit has a lot of ejector pin marks in visible areas, such as the intakes and the gear doors. Cleaning them all up is taking time. The intakes also have some bad joins that need some cleanup. I'm putting Mr. Surfacer on the bombs and stippling them to make the ablative texture on Navy ordnance; it's my first time doing this, so we will see how it goes.
I hope to have more photos this coming weekend. Stay tuned.

Great job!

Pete-
Very nice build! May I ask where you got the arm/disarm marking for the AIM-9 (the green/red decal on the side)? I've seen this as a decal in larger scales, but never in 1/72.
-
Nice! A good build of an often neglected subject. I look forward to the fully completed build. :P

First time with an airbrush period, or first time with a new one? You made a good choice to go with a solid scheme either way.
If you're new to airbrushing, you'll never regret starting it. Some of my most rewarding modeling experiences were with my Paashe H, thought nothing beats good decals.
Best of luck either way! I look forward to seeing your completed model.

Thanks for getting back to me. I took a look at the Buffmaster stuff over at Greatmodels, it looks nice! As for me, I wish they would scale most of it down to 1/144. I heard the old Crown tooled B-52H is back, and would enjoy the chance to build this as a modern bird over Afghanistan. I have the Revell Germany modern B-52H in the stash, but it has the ALCM pylons, and a set of front office windows that bears only a passing resemblance to anything Boeing ever built. I'm considering my options for it; I may need to sand off the window frames and re-shape myself. Scary...

Love the BUFF, especially the cockpit flag! What did you do for the external bomb racks?

I put up a few photos of the kit parts over in planned builds. I'm in progress now and thought I'd start a thread.
The kit again, Hasegawa's Foxtrot Super Hornet. I will be using the box top decals. Sorry for the blur.
Cockpit sidewall (Eduard) in place and painted dark gull gray. I need to do some detail painting, and perhaps a wash.
Cockpit and side panels in place. I'm working on coming up with a throttle quadrant and the two side sticks for the aft cockpit. The panels on their own are way too flat.
Front cockpit panel. I have tried repeatedly to get a better phot, but can't.
I'm not thrilled with the colors Eduard chose for the pre-painted etch. They seem too light to me. The ejection seat parts (black in real life) are about an RLM66/Gunship Gray color. I may need to over paint the detail and replace it myself, since I would go with more of a Tamiya NATO black for these on my own. The grays on the panels are about a light aircraft gray. I chipped some of it folding the rear panel and had to overpaint a substantial area in dark gull gray, making the edge on a panel line to make it less obvious. What I do like are the displays. We'll need to pretend that the bird is powered up sans pilots, but this will also explain why my flaps are not dropped!
Miscellaneous bits with Mr. Surfacer on the ejector pin marks. This kit has more pin marks than possibly anything I have ever built!
My Mr. Surfacer used to be 500, but with age it has thickened to a brushable putty. This is good for some uses, but not more subtle gap filling. My jar of Mr. S 1000 is headed in the same direction. Time to head for the LHS for some fresh supplies; I hope he still carries this.
And now, for the iron that will be dropped:
Three Mk. 83s and a GBU-16. Nothing says Navy like 1000 pounders! The loadout is one VFA-115 used on deployment, I believe in OEF. Three dumb bombs on the right wing, an LGB and single Slammer on the left wing. Sidewinders (-9Ms) on the wingtips, a single tank on the C/L and the targeting pod on the left cheek.
I'm glad the iron and LG bombs aren't next to one another on the wings in this configuration. You can tell they were mastered ~20 years apart (both are Hasegawa aftermarket), and there are subtle size and shape differences that might be more visible were they next to each other.
Well, that's all for now. Hope you like my plan. Happy Easter

Here's one I finished last year this time. "A" model Bug, 1/72 Hasegawa kit. Super Scale decals for VMFA-314, Operation El Dorado Canyon, 1986.
OK, this is more like shooting iron than dropping it, but you get the picture.

I'm in! First time in an ARC group build, so be gentle, please.

Saw a couple of Stratobladders (KC-135Rs) headed for KPIT out my back door today. Always good to see the old gals.

Thanks for sharing your work. Always nice to see a Phantom II built up. The paint work and general appearance of the model are very good.
My comment is on the TERs (triple ejector racks) you are using for the bombs. It is not clear in your photos, but it appears that the TERs may be attached directly to the wings. There should be short pylons between the wings and the TERs. You note that this is Hasegawa's 1/72 kit. It may not include the correct pylons for these stations, I know my Hasegawa F-4E does not. The Fujimi kits in this scale do, though.
In any case, welcome, keep up the good work, and hope to see more from you here on ARC!
Regards,
Ben

I wonder what the point was to paint a plane to look all beat up and nasty. Obviously that scheme didn't stick, but it looks interesting. Imagine a flightline full of that scheme. It would look like a junk yard with every plane being very different in shade.

Thanks, I saved your pix for use in painting my model when I finally get to it! May I ask where you got them?

This was pre-production a/c #6, 73-1669, the climactic test airframe. The three-tone "gray" scheme was produced by painting the aircraft black, then putting on different levels of white paint. There were several different schemes, using several different types of paints, on the early hogs until the AF settled on the two ghost grays in a symmetrical scheme. I have a decal sheet that includes these marks, as well as many other pre- and early-production Warthogs. See p. 12 of Dana Bell's A-10 Warthog in Detail and Scale for a good B&W photo of 669 with MERs full of Mk. 82s. Page 27 of A-10 Warthog in Action has a picture of her in the cold hangar at Eglin with snow falling down. Also, I believe Tamiya's 1/48th kit was commonly shown in these markings for their catalogs.
I think the various one-off schemes for the A-10 would make an interesting group build or club display, if we could round up enough Hog fans at one time. I've thought about doing this all by myself, usually after a beer too many...

I did this last year for our IPMS Chapter's club table at the Nats. The idea was to have as many Pittsburgh-related subjects as possible. Many of our members' contribution wound up in the contest, rather than the display table. Unfortunately I could only stay for the day on Friday, so this model only had ~7 hours of table time up on the mezzanine.
This is a 1/72 Hobby Boss A-7D. The aircraft served with the PA ANG here in Pittsburgh. The date is 1983, and the unit is in the process of moving from SEA paint to Euro 1. There is nice detail in the kit, but there are some shape issues (discussed elsewhere), and NO cockpit panel details or decals!. Decals are AirDoc, which were excellent. The loadout is mainly Hasegawa aftermarket from the 80's. The drop tanks are kitbashed, the bodies are from a Fujimi A-6, while the tails are from this Hobby Boss kit. The ECM pod is shortened from a long ALQ-119. My idea was a rather full, but still plausible, training mission load for the period the decals represent. Each individual piece of ordnance was confirmed in period photos.
I hope you enjoy it. Best of luck to those in the group build! :)

Thanks SO much for sharing these, they're great! As always, I especially love the shots from ELP. The morning sun on the Franklins is a beautiful sight.
BTW, I have a Matchbox F-104G with the "Fighting 69th" decals. This may prove the inspiration to do it as a quick build.

The look of this thing is beginning to grow on me. I wonder how long till ROG does a kit? Hopefully they beat Anigrand to it.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Now I've got another question. On the 1x1x1 missile load with the LANTIRN and bombs, why not put a second -9 on the opposite side of the first? Neither the LANTIRN or Phoenix should be in the way, and the Sidewinder doesn't weigh too much.

Recent progress:
Got the top of the cockpit painted:
Lightened up the color of the cockpit to better match the pre-painted photoetch:
If you know what color Eduard uses for these panels, please let me know.
Finished one seat, left the other for comparison:
I used Tamiya NATO black for the seat, this is still too dark compared to the Eduard PE on the parachute pack. Well, its on now, so I'll make the back seat to match. Overall I think the PE on the seat is a big improvement over the kit seat, but still not as good as most white metal or resin ones. I doubt I'll use PE on a seat like this again, except for the straps and handles.
Next time...warheads for foreheads...
