Huh, Mavericks are one of the few weapons I *don't* have in my spares box for whatever reason (I may have some crappy ones from the old Italeri Gripens, but they don't count because they're so terrible). I seem to remember there being a distinct lack of proper single Maverick rails available in 1/72 last I had a good look, but maybe that was fixed at some point? I'll have to have a look at that...

Modern Hobbies makes a good 1/72 Maverick and single rail: Click Here I have a few of these I intend to use for A-10 builds, the triple rails haven't been used much in actual combat loads.

  2. Added some seat belts and other "soft" items on the seat using Tamiya tape. Oxygen and comms hoses from solder. Coated with thin CA after to hopefully make it more permanent.

Also filed the center gap between the pilot's knees, as the kit part was straight across. There are several other shape issues with the seats (I shudder to think what the scale thickness of the ejection handles is, for example) but this is as much as I care to do for this build.

The cockpit is starting to come together, not sure what color Eduard used for the instrument panels, I couldn't match it with the paints I have on hand unfortunately. Good thing is, very little of it will be visible once installed in fuselage.

Very nice work so far. I also have had my doubts about Eduard's choices with their pre-painted. They go for scale lightening effect, but I feel they over do it.

  4. F-8E Crusader of VF-191 "Satan's Kittens", shot down a MiG-17 July 9, 1968. Lt. Cdr. John Nichols was the pilot.

This will be the 1/72 Academy kit, OOB or close. Decals are from Wolfpak Decals sheet 72-061 "Red Eye" shared by viking73 (thanks again!).  Link to decal review here.

Good luck on your Intrepid projects. The Intrepid has always been of interest to me as a family friend was a photographer's mate aboard her in the late 1960's - early 1970's; the CVS days. He showed me some great slides of air operations when I was a kid, and got me interested in carrier aviation more than I already was. That was before the ship was a museum, which I have been fortunate enough to visit shortly after the opening.

I'll be watching this thread with interest.

  6. You will usually find mutli-colored markings on the "CAG bird" - the aircraft in a squadron that is marked with the name of the Commander of the Air Group (CAG), now formally designated as an Air Wing. The Modex (three digit number applied to the aircraft, in this case 400) of the CAG bird always ends with "00" (modex uniquely identifies each plane within the air wing). These aircraft are usually decorated more colorfully than others in the unit. The multiple colors represent the colors of each of the squadrons in the wing.

  7. Not to change the subject, but is this phantom carrying a towed target? I'm wondering what the red fin-like shape is under the starboard drop tank, and also what the dark tube and cone is visible just behind the tank's pylon.

BTW I too built this Airfix kit. I did it as the Israeli F-4E with the cannon pods. Lots of Brrrrtttt...

  8. OK this REALLY piqued my interest. I've spent something like 45 minutes on Google and USN.mil and simply cannot find a picture of this E-2 with the cool radome. Is there an image date in Google Earth that might narrow down the timeframe for the search?
