  1. I picked up an opened Monogram kit, and this seems to be the only missing piece. Does anyone have an instrument panel from a 1/72 A-10A that they would be willing to part with? Can be Monogram plastic, or even a decal from another manufacturer (Academy or Hasegawa?).

If you care to trade I have a myriad of 1/72 modern jet kits and weapons accessories that may be of interest - mostly US/Western.

  2. Thanks for sharing the TO. It's interesting to follow the notes on the mods through the manual (square 8 and 11 are the pertinent notes). The same throttle buttons were changed from engine ignition to chaff (left) / flare (right) dispense. Pilot needed to learn the proper engine start/restart sequence and switchology depending on the block/TO of the plane they were flying. What would start ignition on one plane would dispense chaff/flares on another - NOT something helpful if you are trying to restart an engine in flight.

Thanks for the reply. I take it from your user name you have some hands-on experience with the type. Can you say when these aircraft would have been refit, and if there was a particular name (e.g., F-16 upgrades had names like "Falcon Up") for this program? Were all production aircraft covered, or only some? There would have been a long service life between when they were built and when they were retired; I'm curious to see if this improvement was made during that time, and if so, how widespread it was..

  4. Re-reading Dana Bell's excellent book on the A-10 (D&S vol. 19), I see the integrated chaff/flare dispensers at the wingtips and gear nacelle ends were added with S/N 77-227. There are a LOT of Hogs built prior to this serial number. Were any of the earlier aircraft back-fit with these integrated dispensers? Given the importance of expendables in protecting an aircraft in the high-threat CAS environment, I imagine some means of protection was provided. If not refit, were the earlier birds relegated to training or other second-line roles?

Nice photo - thank you for sharing it!

Off-topic notes on the AIM-9 for those with serious ordnance AMS: The body is still white at this late date (think US stocks of white Sidewinders would have been gone by then), and the guidance section has the red-brown band on it.

  6. The A-10 is a good opportunity for a manufacturer to come in and blow away all the previous kits in 1/72, as they all show their age or have reported "issues" of one type or another. Perhaps Meng will add one to their increasing collection in the One True Scale? Or Great Wall Hobby could do it if their upcoming F-15E in this scale does well.

  7. I think this a/c was freshly painted and sent into action before it could have unit markings applied. The paint itself appears very fresh; the weathering is mostly gun soot, I suppose. There is some weathering on the rudder that could be fluid leakage - is this a spot where gun gasses could get to?

  8. Not to hijack, but do any of these kits/conversions have the special Sparrow pylons? This is a critical part to giving the ADF the BVR missile capability that made it an advance over the vanilla A/B models they were based on (until AIM-120 came along). Darren, I see this in your build - is it in the Revell kit?

  9. Does anyone else think the CAG jet and 204 from 1990 is overall FS 36320? The lighter color of the stencils and the national insignia on the fuselage side push me to think this. Certainly quite unusual.

Ya the LAU-117 is a tad bit different wouldn't be to hard to sratch build

Andrew D., as you mention the Wolfpak decals I presume you are in 1/72. You could get the LAU-117 from Modern Hobbies. I have some and they are very nice.

From where does all that dirt on the tail come???  Are crewmen walking up the vertical stab of Vikings?

I imagine they could and did, although what we see in these photos could be normal leaking lubricants and flight deck grime. The Viking tail was tall enough that it had to be built with a fold to fit in the hangar bay. As to whether you were supposed to walk on it, I'll defer to those who worked with them to say.

1/48 Revell A-10C.  (Revell has a great starting point with the old monogram A-10.)  I don't really know how difficult what I am asking for is, but would think it easier to convert to recessed panel lines, than completely re-do from scratch.

While I'd love to see this myself, converting from raised to recessed panel lines is VERY difficult to do for an injection molded product. You have to add steel to the tool (remember, the tool is the reverse of the product), which is hard to do (read $$$) and doesn't tend to last. It is much easier to move from recessed to raised (though who would want that these days?). That being said, I'd appreciate even a raised panel line A-10C.

  13. A new tool (reasonably detailed cockpit, landing gear, and gear bays), accurate, A-10 Warthog in 1/72. Ideally could be built as an A, A w/ LASTE mods or the various flavors of C (I'm sure I missed something). Weapons/stores would be optional; if included, they should be accurate and be plausible for the markings/version/timeframe.

While we're on the subject of external stores, I'd like to see in 1/72:

US 7-shot rocket pods (Eduard, I'm looking at you)

Mk. 80 series bombs with various updates seen since the 1970's - air burst fuses, newer tail units including AIR ballutes and modern low-drag fins

GBU-54 (500 lb JDAM w/ added laser guidance)

Proper markings for GBU-12 (the markings are orange, not yellow!)

I am planning to release the two 1/72 scale sheets at the same time after I release the second 1/48 F-16 sheet. They use the same set of colors and it will be more cost-effective that way.

Do you have any plans for 72002 to still come out? I'd be interested, and the previous posts in this thread indicate there is some interest from others. Your fans want to know your plans!
