  1. toadwbg-

Thanks, Cybermodeler was one of of my first stops to look. The colors they list for Thailand are 36373, 36176, and 36081. I think I might believe this for this specially-painted aircraft flown by a prince, and maybe even for the more standard Hill-pattern birds, but not for the early two-color pattern.

The prince's aircraft was in a scheme similar to this F-5:

Anyone who was at G-D / Lockheed back in the day when these were built, or even with the Thai Air Force?

  2. Thanks again. Absent other information I'm going to use the two ghost grays, 36375 and 36320. Looking at multiple pictures of this scheme it seems the darker of the two grays is still lighter than the radome, which should start out as 36270 (neutral gray).

  3. Thanks, Andrew. The difference between 36373 and 36375 is not that much, so I'm willing to go TLAR (that looks about right) with the lighter of the two grays. The difference between 36320 and 36270 is a tad more noticeable, 36320 being bluer and lighter to my eye. Maybe I'm getting a little too much AMS here?

  4. Considering entering a Thai F-16A done in the early scheme for the Far East group build.

Can anyone tell me if this scheme is 36373/36320 as reported by decal maker Zotz (described as "Korean Air Force"), or 36375/36270 as reported by wings-aviation.ch? These are enough different that even in 1/72 I think the difference will be visible. Perhaps it was even something else?

  5. Considering entering a Thai F-16A in the early scheme. Can anyone tell me if this scheme is 36373/36320 as reported by decal maker Zotz, or 36375/36270 as reported by wings-aviation.ch? These are enough different that even in 1/72 I think the difference will be visible.

  6. It is waiting in line to be printed and will be released later this year - there are both natural metal and camouflage options on the sheet.

Very glad to hear this. Thank you!

In the meantime I'll build an Bahraini F-16 using your 1/72 sheet.

  7. Is this project still being done? I have a Destroyer ready to go into major assembly and could press forward if quality decals are forthcoming. Will this be natural metal, or camouflage? Which version or versions will be included?

  8. I don't have any hard data, but given its size, I'd have to think it's some kind of a data link pod used during the JAWS exercise. Given how long ago that was (1978), I'd say that's as likely as anything. I've never seen it on any other A-10, and they were camouflaged to match the exercise camouflage applied to the whole airplane.

Thanks, Jennings. This explanation seems as good as any. Not too hard to scratchbuild, at any rate.

I did find a few photos of these on gray jets (Mask 10A asymmetrical scheme). According to the site they are located on, they were also involved in the JAWS program.

LINK - one pod that we can see, painted gray.

LINK - two pods, still in spotted camo. Borrowed from other a/c?

LINK - the rear dome on this one is yellow or radome tan. The front one may be as well, but it is hard to see. Also of note is that this is a Davis-Monthan marked a/c, not Nellis.

  9. MXU-648 Travel/Baggage pods.

Thanks, but volume-wise, I think you are off by an order of magnitude.

boom175, you may be on to something with a range telemetry pod. Whatever this is, I don't know that I have seen a photo of it on any other aircraft but the A-10.

  10. I see the A-10 Warthogs involved in the JAWS exercises often were equipped with one or two small torpedo-shaped pods on their wings. See photos:

    Photo 1

    Photo 2

In both of these photos they are on stations 2 or 10, outboard of the LAU-88 with the Mavericks.

I noted the 1/48 scale Italeri kit comes with these (see Brett Green's review HERE). However, I have never seen an explanation of what these pods are or what they are for. Can anyone tell me please? Were they carried past this set of exercises, or are they a one-off? Thanks in advance.

  11. A brief write-up of the NAVPAC appears here.

"The centerline pylon could be used to carry a "navigation pack (NAVPAC)" pod with radio beacon-tracking and distance-measuring gear for flights to USAF or civilian land bases whose navigation gear was different from that used by the Navy. "

  12. I believe the yellow in question was a yellow adhesive tape. I remember seeing it on A-6s, S-2s, P-3s, and other subsonic Navy aircraft in this timeframe. I can only imagine it was there to protect the paint from erosion. It was often glossy to repel bugs, weathering, etc., but I wouldn't be surprised if it got flatter over time. Why it had to be yellow I don't know, maybe the material was something exotic that could not be colored gray to match the planes.

  13. So Speed Hunter Graphics has announced a 1/32 decal sheet with a 180th FW plane (block 42) in 5th Gen Have Glass paint. This is not a WHIF. Anyone have pics they can share of this bird?

I had thought that this scheme was going to be confined to Viper units with a SEAD/DEAD mission. Has the mission of this unit changed, or is the scheme slated for wider use?
