  1. Doc, I was in the same situation when I was looking for a bunch of Cobra parts for my UH-1H. By the time I finally decided to start my project, Chris went out sick for a few months. I would suggest that when Chris returns, you order anything you think you may need from him at once. I would hope that this would benefit Cobra with some additional business and also, you can't take it for granted that all of these small aftermarket companies will be around indefinately. Most are one-person operations and (I am assuming) are a sideline business. I wish I had taken my own advice with Met
  2. Ray, Those pictures are perfect. Just what I was looking for. Also gives me some good guidance for weathering on the top of the fuselage. Just out of curiousity, would you (or anyone else out there) know if a circa 1972/73 Huey would have the black walkway on the cabin roof? Since my model doesn't even have the black anti-glare nose, any color beside OD would help it stand out. Regards to all, John
  3. Hi Folks, Just wondering if anyone out there has any color pictures of the center portion of the main rotor on an H model Huey? Just trying to make sure my paint job is accurate. As always, thanks in advance! John
  4. Very nice site, thanks for the link Charles. John
  5. First of all, thanks for posting that clip. The B-47 is one of my favorite aircraft (still hoping that someone will do one of these in 1/48th). The film clip of all those planes taxing and taking off was great. I'm not 100% sure but I believe that the dome shaped object that you asked about was the antenna for a compass system. I could be way off but I thought I read that somewhere. Regards, John
  6. Nice pictures, thanks for taking the time to post them. That is sure a tired looking Chinook, any idea what model it is? John
  7. I just noticed the markings read "US Army" instead of "United States Army". Is this a new version that is now being applied to the other types of helicopters in the fleet or is it specific to the UH-72? I'm not a big fan of EADS products but this one is starting to grow on me. Looks like a Littlebird on steroids. John
  8. I saw a picture today of what appeared to be an early model OH-58 (c model?) flying in Iraq. I didn't think that there were any of these in service over there. It doesn't appear to be a Kiowa Warrior minus the mast mounted sight - it has an regular passenger cabin, glass rear windows and the early model exhaust. This is the first time I've seen any pictures of these helicopters in Iraq. The picture was labeled as being taken at Taji, Iraq on 6/4/08. The only thing that makes me doubt this a bit is the soldier in the picture is dressed in the old-style DCU's and has a standard M-16
  9. What a great job on the rotor mast. I can't wait to see this completed. John
  10. Cute kids! I'm glad to see that Dad has got them introduced to helicopter modeling. I really like the play seat they are sitting on, it looks familiar for some reason......
  11. Another progress report on my project. After much deliberation, I decided that the cargo compartment looked too empty so I added the large 5 person troop seat. This was somewhat of a challenge since I had already assembled the model. The kit provided seat is very, very basic. I ended up thinning down and modifying the kit parts with a lot of trimming and adding of supports and brackets. I then added the kit's PE seatbelts. I really like these, they are one of the highlights of this kit. It took me mulptiple tries to get the seat installed. I'm not sure I'm 100% happy with it. I sti
  12. I've used some of their armor kits over the years. I've found that they have gotten better but still have a few rough spots here and there. All in all, they put out acceptable products (IMHO). The thing about AEF is that they provide kits of obscure subjects, which no one else has any interest in doing. You have a couple of choices, either go with the AEF kit and if you have to, spend some time on the rough pieces or put your project on hold and hope someone else will get around to releasing the same set. Good luck, John
  13. Hi Ryan, First of all, Dragon makes a UH-1H kit. It may be a bit rare but you should be able to find it out there or online. If you want to get some nice aftermarket gear for your model check out Cobra Company. For decals, Fireball Modelworks offers decals for both Vietnam era and modern Army Hueys. Good luck on your project. John
  14. Wow, what a great job. I really like the way your model came out, especially the cluttered look inside the cabin. What did you use to simulate all the electrical cords? John
  15. Check out this clip of an SH-60 getting soaked. Like the intro said, if it was this bad on the deck of an aircraft carrier, I can't even imagine what it was like for those poor squids on the destroyers. http://www.strategypage.com/military_video...0806260045.aspx
  16. Ray, As always, I thank you for the help. I never cease to be amazed at the sheer depth of your photo library. Enjoy the decals, they give you some great options. Regards, John
  17. Hi Folks, Just wondering if anyone has any good detail pictures of the rear passenger seats in a UH-1H? Not the gunner seats but the 5-person seat that mounts against the rear bulkhead and spans the width of the fuselage. I'm especially interested in the mounting struts and supports. Thanks very much (in advance), John
  18. Haven't had a chance to do much on the model this week, too much going on with work and kids. The only things I've managed to get done are: - Replaced the pilots side windows as noted above - Replaced the clear anti-collision beacon on the top of engine cowling (the original one I made was too tall) and painted it with clear red acrylic paint. - Painted all the navigation lights with clear red / green - Added the rear cargo door restraints (thanks to all who provided info on this obscure topic). I still need to do something about the front locking assemblies but since the kit's doors ar
  19. I believe that the D model also had dual pitot tubes on the nose, while on the H, they replaced them with a single pitot on the cabon roof. There may also be other detail changes but that is the only one that I can remember. John
  20. Hi Brian, If it helps I am doing a step by step posting on the Dragon UH-1. It's a page or two back, called "Dragon Huey - Last Army Huey in Vietnam". There are many other great models of the Dragon kit posted on this group. As Gino and others have said, the kit is rough but it has great potential. Combine it with some of the nice aftermarket sets from Cobra and you can have a good looking Huey. To answer your last question, the fit is actually pretty decent. I had a slight problem fitting the windscreen but nothing a small amount of putty couldn't solve. This discussion group has
  21. What a great job. All the extra work you did really makes a big difference. John
  22. Nice pictures, thanks for posting. I really liked the first on of the Huey, where was that taken? Looks like Germany. John
  23. I was going to air brush on some soot on the tail boom from the exhaust but with the toilet bowl, I don't think this would be appropriate. I wonder if there would still be some soot present on the far end of the tail? I can't seem to find any pics that show it either way. Most pictures of Hueys with the toilet bowl show them in dark helo drab and you wouldn't notice any exhaust staining anyway.
  24. I second that. You Brits are the bollocks! Is that the correct use of that word?
  25. Very nice start. I look forward to seeing this one get built!! Where are you getting the decals for this? Do they come with the kit or is there an aftermarket source? Regards, John
