1/35 UH-60A Grenada (OP Urgent Fury) Build
Loach Driver replied to HeavyArty's topic in Helicopter Modeling
The use of the UH-60A in Greneda is very interesting, given that there isn't a huge amount of info out there on its use there (as far as I know). I have the Academy kit in the attic too and was just thinking, if I ever do build it, I'd like to do a Greneda UH-60, either regular markings or as a medevac version with the red cross markings. I'll be watching this build with interest. LD. -
The fence looks amazing. Very realistic. LD.

Please give consideration to markings for the prototypes and early production test aircraft. Perhaps the OV-10D NOGS aircraft too! Great to see this sheet coming, LD.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your CO. Thanks for posting that information for us here. LD. -
Your diorama is looking stunning already! I too would be interested in getting a few figures made. I have a basic diorama in mind from a certain helicopter-based movie from the early eighties......... LD.

Very nice Cobra. They look good with the fairings removed from the skid legs. LD.

The tool box is a masterpiece of scratchbuilding. Amazing skill. LD.

I am always amazed at how you get such great results from your use of plastic in screatchbuilding. How do you get such good curves from plastic rod? Do you use heat to manipulate the plastic? LD.

I was surprised to see this being issued as a new tool. The Italeri kit that Airfix re-issued in the past is not a bad kit and if it gets the correct modern composite blades, it depicts an RAF HC1 or CH-47D version. Still, with so many decal options, Airfix will probably do well with this new tool. LD.

Operation Gothic Serpent Aircraft references
Loach Driver replied to hawkwrench's topic in Helicopter Modeling
Thanks for the update, Floyd. I didn't know there were a couple of different versions in use in that time frame. Do you know who manufactured this exhaust? Was it done with assistance from McDonnell Douglas Helicopters or was it an in-house project developed, fabricated and tested by the 160th engineering personnel themselves? Thanks. LD. -

That is my understanding. I'd guess that the big air intake supplies cooling air to the engine bay but also into the exhaust system, mixing cool air with the hot exhaust to bring the overall exhaust temperature down. Only a guess, as I say. LD. -

It has been a difficult item to truly get right given the lack of decent references. It looks small and skinny in that picture while in others it has a “fuller” look to it. LD. -

Here is a photo that popped up on FB. Another new shot of an AH-6G with the IR Exhaust fitted. LD. -
Looks good. Great to see new heli books coming out. They are a scarcity, these days. LD.

Help! Need instructions! Nichimo 1/20 H-500
Loach Driver replied to mikem8888's topic in Helicopter Modeling
I have no idea, to be honest. Try shapeways perhaps. Some 3D guy might be able to draw up the parts and print them. I'd imagine someone offers such a service but it probably won't be all that cheap. LD. -

It has been done in the past! 3D printing might help out with the rotorhead and tailplane. The blades are different and I think the chord gets wider for the outer half of the blade span. The blade roots are different too. The hydraulic dampers will need to be added. You could take measurements from a TOW pod from a smaller kit and figure out how big the 1/20th pod would be. The same with the nose mounted sight. Lots of sratchbuilding but doable. LD. -
This is a serious thread revival! From 2008 till 2023! My latest query is: Is there any solution to the problem of the cloudy Kitech clear canopy? Is the graininess all the way through the plastic or is it just a feature of the surface? If that is the case, then a good sanding with a fine grade sand paper followed by a dip in Future might work. Has anyone had any success in improving the finish and clarity of the Kitech Blue Thunder canopy? Thanks LD.

No problem. I hope the pictures are sufficient to help with the construction of your model. LD.
