Throwing my two cents in here, get a California Air Tools compressor, you won't be sorry. Very quiet and dependable. I've had mine since 2015 and no complaints at all with it. I drain it after every use and leave the petcock open until, I go to use it again.

As for airbrushes, there are LOTS of options. You'll need to decide if you want a siphon feed (cup on the bottom ) or, a gravity feed ( cup on top ). You DO NOT need to spend big money for a good brush. Again, just my opinion but, I've been a Paasche guy my whole life. Good, dependable, affordable, simple to clean brushes. I have the VL type airbrushes ( 25+ years now ), I have three different bodies set up with a #1, #3 and, #5 needle in each body because I got tired of swapping over for different painting applications. These are my "workhorses" and I've NEVER had any issues with them. I think my work, that I've shared here on the forums, using the Paasche brushes speaks for itself.

Paasche also makes a nice gravity feed airbrush, the Talon. I'm considering one because the cup is on top. Sometimes the cup on the bottom gets in the way. I also have a Grex Tritium TG3, a Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CR plus and, a Mr. Hobby / GSI Creos Custom 0.18 for my small detail work.

Your also gonna need some kind of spray booth that vents outside, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR SPRAYING.

Again, all this is just my opinion and, what I've used over the years. You'll find what works for you, good luck

Cool! Looks like it's got great potential for multi-use, would that be correct?

The new tool Tamiya Bf 109G-6.   Basically a single sprue and the best fitting kit I’ve ever built.   Tons of paint scheme options!  $20ish dollars.

I'll look into it! Any way I can tell from the box if it's the new tool? I have no idea how fresh or new the inventory is at the local hobby shop, unless you suggest I just order online.

  3. Take it from someone who up until now has hand-painted models exclusively - get an airbrush! Especially if you want that fresh "from the factory" look. And you'll want to test on something else first - could be as simple as a sheet of scratch paper.

BTW those are some amazing skills you've got in that resto!

  4. Thanks everyone! I was tempted to order online but I ended up just going to the local hobby store (HobbyTown USA) and picked up what they had - an Airfix 1/72 Spitfire, a Revell 1/48 P-40 and P-51 and the infamous 1/48 P-61 (the last two are particularly for nostalgia) along with the Revell 1/144 Saturn V (can't wait to see how it compares to the LEGO version!)

They did indeed have a wide selection of Tamiya kits but they were priced something like twice as much as the Airfix and Revell offerings. Maybe next time.

  5. Whew, quite a title I know. But I think that pretty much gets everything.

Subject isn't really all that much of a concern other than I feel like a classic prop whether it be a Messer, Mustang, Spitfire whatever. 1/72 preferred just because of space concerns. Along those lines I feel like a single-prop too. Other than that, umm, whatev I guess.

I'm thinking probably an Airfix, Italeri or Mono/Revell kit is going to fit the bill but that still leaves a lot open for suggestion, especially for any of you who has a preference for a particular kit you think will fit the bill.

Unfortunately, there are no kits for Argentinian or the very latest Brazillian A-4's. The Argentinian A-4's modifications of the A-4M are pretty much all in the cockpit with a bunch of new antennas and bumps. I have a list of changes with correctly sized templates for 1/72. If you want to see it I can post it, and I can resize it to 1/48 if you wish.

The original Brazilian A-4 (the AF-1 Falcão) was just a A-4KU, which is pretty much an early A-4M. But the upgraded AF-1B has a new cockpit, new antennas, and some complicated structures on the nose. If you are serious about making a 1/72 version of the AF-1B, then I can help with that too. I was working on such an aircraft and scratchbuilt the nose structures and have made resin copies of the nose.

edit: note that the AF-1B currently doesn't carry guns. They might be fitted later or as needs arise because the area is still painted black to hide powder marks which wouldn't make sense if the guns were never to return.

I'm not married to any particular scale, I just put 1/48 as an upper limit, as a matter of fact if anything I prefer 1/72 just for space concerns. But then again of course I wouldn't mind you posting and sharing too 🙂

  7. Any scale is fine as long as it's 1/48 or below, and I'm referring to the "autocannon delete" modification that most Skyhawks flying for "air forces" have nowadays.

The article that inspired this, because it does actually look really cool when loaded to the hilt with every upgrade: https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/40404/top-aces-aggressor-a-4s-are-now-the-worlds-most-advanced-skyhawks but notice it's cannons are long gone.

I must say I'm impressed with the final product, but I'm also really impressed with the attention to detail included in the base kit itself and just the attention to design the 2009 movie people put into the ship. The detail of the individual phaser turrets in particular is just freaking insane! 🤪
