  1. I actually really like the way the shark tail B-17's look. There is a certain grace and refinement in these early B-17's. I look forward to seeing "The Swoose" completed some day. The only early B-17 left in existance to my knowledge.
  2. Starting to look like a Flying Fortress. Lots of work left to do. The Hasegawa B-17F has been in my "hangar queen" partially built pile since sometime in the early 1980's. She's not part of this group build but I'm going to finish her anyway in the markings of Knockout Dropper.
  3. OBD, don't know if there is a Hobby Lobby in your neck of the woods, but they have some neat small model cases designed for model cars but that will fit a 1/72 fighter. clicky

    Navy 3 tone scheme

I found this helpful for mixing Tamiya paints. Clicky
  5. Like many of the others, I like 1/72 scale for a variety of reasons: availability of subjects, cost, space, ability to complete models rather than just hoard kits. I am intested in colors and markings and variations of aircraft types. For example, I will happily build multiple out of box P-51D Mustangs in various unit markings. I can do the same with Bf 109's, MiG-21's, F-4 Phantom's, F-86's, etc. I don't care very much about details although as a former pilot I will usually upgrade the cockpit. With all the neat decal options for small nations, I can do endless numbers of Russian jets
  6. Pavla makes a conversion set that is designed for the Condor kit. You could probably make it fit the ICM kit. The Pavla conversion kit leaves out the longer afterburner nozzles. I haven't figured out how to make them yet. Yufei suggested it might be possible to use modified 1/48 nozzles such as from an F-18 kit. clicky Sorry, this isn't a very good photo, but I hope you can see the longer burner cans. Clicky
  7. Well, a bit of progress but not as much as I would have liked. SWMBO keeping my weekends devoid of modeling for the most part. Major sub-assemblies are put together and Mr. Surfacer applied to joints. Next step is to join the wings and tails. As Academy built too much dihedral into the wings, I think I will add shims of plastic sheet to take some of it out. I'll use the old tried and true Hasegawa kit as a guage as well as photos.

    Making a P-47D-6 RE

Dang, I compared my Quickboost cowling to a Tamiya and it's too small. What a waste of money.
  10. These tanks are included in the old Monogram 1/48 F-80C kit. Not sure if that model is boxed now.
  11. Crikey! My modeling prayers have been answered. Obscureco has done a set of 110 gallon tanks in 1/72! Now I'm going to need to build more Iwo Mustangs! Clicky :(

    Making a P-47D-6 RE

Quickboost makes a -5/-6 conversion cowling for the Tamiya P-47 in 1/72 and 1/48. Clicky Clicky Hope that helps. You might be able to find it from other hobby houses. I know Hannants carries the Quickboost line.

    Rolls-Royce Griffons

I'm not trying to be a smart-*** but if that was the case, then the Griffon is turning the wrong way. British and American carriers have the island on the starboard side which facilitates a left hand traffic pattern. An engine turning counter-clockwise when viewed from the front (such as a Merlin, Pratt & Whitney R-2800, etc) will have torque that will want to roll the airplane to port, away from the island. On a Griffon or other engine that turns clockwise when viewed from the front it is just the opposite. An increase in throttle will cause the airplane to roll to starboard, towards

    New group build idea

I think it's a good idea and humbly suggest you include the Mustang racers. Some of them don't have many original P-51 parts left in them, but they are Mustangs all the same. One of my favorites was the Roto Finish Mustang that raced in the early 1970's. It later became the Red Baron, was wrecked and is now back in original Mustang configuration. In its Roto Finish guise it still looks like a Mustang and has a Merlin, not a Griffon. See bottom of page on the linky. Clicky
  15. L/F 1/72 Airfix Ju 87B decals - from kit # 3030 or 3030A Battle of Britain R2. Will pay postage, etc. thanks! Clicky
  16. Greetings, I am interested in adding a Sikorski H-5G (Air Rescue Service) to my collection of 1/72 scale rescue aircraft. I found this kit doing a search, but no reviews. My past experience with Mach-2 kits has only been the C-54 Skymaster and it is rough. Clicky I want to build an H-5 that looks like this. Clicky or perhaps this one...I know it's an earlier variation of the R-5. Clicky Any ideas or thoughts on this kit would be appreciated.

    Uraguay AF P-51D

Julien, On aircraft # 257 I see an ADF "football" antenna. Most WWII era American bombers had these ADF antennas. You might be able to "liberate" one from a B-17 or B-24 kit. It probably wouldn't bee too hard to scratch build one out of a bomb or something, either. You will sometimes see F-51 aircraft with an ADF loop style antenna. I found this link which tells a little about automatic direction finding and has a couple of photos of the antennas. Clicky Hope this helps. :(
  18. Beauty. I'm going to get one of the "Royal Class" British Phantoms.
  19. Thanks guys! How about this one? Is it possible to tell the newer tool from the old tool by the box? Or do you need the catalogue number? I bought one of these "Shark teeth" boxings off of evil Bay a few years ago and it was the old tool. Clicky or this one... Clicky
  20. I am looking to add a Fujimi 1/72 British Phantom to the stash. I want the newer tool version. I am a little confused about the various boxings. Found this one on evil-Bay. I believe they boxed this version in both "old" tool and newer tool. Any ideas? thanks! Clicky
  21. Greetings, I picked up one of the old Hasegawa 1/72 Curtiss SOC-3 kits recently. I think it would look nice in pre-war cruiser markings, such as U.S.S San Francisco. Any after market decals available for this old kit? I know that Microscale made a sheet back in the 19070s, 72-062. It's out of production now. I already checked Starfighter Decals, as he has done some other early Navy stuff but no joy for this aircraft. thanks!
  22. I bought one of these in a box for $9.50 last week. Someone else paid $70.00 for the same kit in a bag?! They could have bought a CMR Mk. IX and had $20 left over. Clicky
  23. Sorry for the delay in replying...there is just a cavernous hole in the radio operator's compartment on these early shark-tail Academy B-17's. I checked my Academy SB-17G (rescue) boxing and it has an empty hole as well.
