  1. Excellent choice. You don't see too many FAC birds that often, and this will be a great addition to the GB. This was the historic bird that landed on the USS Midway in 1975 and now retired in Pensacola. Best of luck Triet
  2. The other one crash landed in Cambodia that I was referring to. I think it's a U on the front landing gear http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/printer_410.shtml
  3. Hi Patrick These SEA camo model is personally significant because pilot H.V. Cam was shot down over An Loc during the siege of the city in July 74' - the last time he would fly a Skyraider. The gray aircraft "might" be one that was involved in the military coup in 1962 to overthrow Presiden Ngo Dinh Diem. Though the coup failed, it marked the begining of the downfall of a Vietnamese President, and it symbolized the rise of the VNAF. So there you have it, a little history few people know. Bye for now. TC
  4. And this one in SEA camo. I replaced the canopy slide links with stainless steel rods. The lights were sanded off and replaced with clear sprue from the kits and sanded to shapes. That's all for now. Thanks for reading.
  5. Here is the 1st one. All done in MM enamel gull gray
  6. That's great that the forum is back up again - just in time for some update. Since to forum was down, I managed to assemble the planes together and got to the paint stages. Before the painting started, I was figuring out a plan to do the fuselage band, as there is no decals available for this ac. It's either mask and paint, or homemade decal. I did a little of both. I masked and painted the yellow band with MM insignia yellow and printed the stripes in clear inkjet decals. I got this art drawing from vnaf.net site and printed the drawing onto the decal paper. Thanks Leon!
  7. I reworked the wheel hubs by removing the backing. This added a 3 dimensional effect, better than painting it black background. I just sanded until the backing becomes paper thin, then poke them out with a sharp knife. All remains now is to clean out the flash. One thing about this kit is it doesn't allow for the late war Skyraider, ie. no solid wheel hubs and Yankee seats. There isn't any conversion in this scale that I can think of. That's all for now Regards
  8. Moving on to the legs, I shortened the front legs by 1mm. I had built this in the past and noticed the final model stands too tall. The 1/48 Tamiya A-1H looked about righ so I compared the Tamiya 1/48 kit. Using conversions to a 1/72 scale, I concluded that the Hasegawa leg stood about 1mm longer. Brass rod was used to reconnect the modified legs.
  9. I finally have free time so I'll take advantage of it as much as possible Hector. BTW the decals is sent, so I hope they fit your needs. I decided to repositioned the rudder. It'll probably go on the gray A-1. The gray scheme is kind of plain, so this should offset the boring look. I haven't decide to do the same for the other A-1 yet. Let's see how this goes. Til next time.
  10. The exhaust pipes gets drilled out. I started out with the smallest drill bit, then gradually opened them up with larger bits, being careful not to tear out the opening holes. Notice the boarding step is missing? Every one of the Hasegawa kit had this problem. It looked like they were broken off during manufacturing process. I'll have to add in some brass plates to replace them. Regards
  11. I got the fuselage together without a hitch, but had to trim the locating tabs from the fuselage. That was for the original tub, but not for the resin tub. I also added the grill in the radiator using brass mesh for K&S. The mesh density is a little coarse than I would've liked but there's nothing else available. At least it covered up that voided area.
  12. Hi everyone; I managed to finish both engines today. Some details were added in to make it more busy. I didn't go overboard with hoards of details because once the prop is in, most details inside are blocked. I need to repaint the gear case to a lighter gray though.
  13. Wow Frank, that is one sweet looking Sandy. That's one of the best weathering on a Spad I've seen. I see you also corrected the wing dihedral angle.. That's one mean looking Spad. Regards Triet
  14. Hi Patrick. Most likely there'll be no wash. I test fit the pit on the fuselage and it is dark inside as is. So any wash will hide the rest of the details - what's left of it I can see. Come to think of it, the only thing that is visible is the seat and the CMK gun sight. Regards Triet
  15. The rest of the pits went straight forward. You have to use the original kit's instrument panel, CMK does not include that nor does it mentioned in the instructions, only the instrument acetate sheet and the front surface for bezels recess. Also there are alot of tiny PE parts the instructions did not mentioned where they go. Some I can figure out, some not so I left them out. I've never worked with resin and PE, so this is my first. This thing is tiny. Sorry about the image, I think my ancient Canon S30 had outlived its usefullness Regards
  16. Well, I started CMK pit and ran into a little bumpy road. The head rest is too short. I cut out the bulk head and shim up with styrene square block. It was still short so I repeated with another block. The tub seems to fit perfectly into the fuselage without hacking or sanding. Regards
  17. Hi Patrick. I probably won't do the box schemes. Instead, these ones: There are no aftermarket decals of course, so I'm on my own. I could see the Dragon Scales fuselage band could give me some problems. But other than that, the rest of the markings shouldn't be a problem. The SEA scheme, I could use the stars and bars from the kit and come up with some letters and numbers from spare decals. Regards
  18. What would Vietnam War be without a Skyraider? I had these kits on the shelf for awhile now, so this will be a perfect opportunity to use them. This is the superb Hasegawa 1/72 kit released in 97' and the CMK interior resins. Good as it is, it could use some enhancements, like the pit and wheel wells need some details. I will open the cowl flaps, as well as rebuilding the pneumatic rear wheel, and add the anti-sway link in the front legs. I'll build both kits the same way, but may vary a little, and the paint scheme will be early war scheme and late 3 tones jungle camo. Regards Triet
  19. Here is a flight of four F-5E from Bien Hoa, RVN. Contrary to beliefs that the Tiger II did not wear checker fuselage band, these four did. The picture was from a news paper clipping in 1972. Sorry for the quality, that's the best I can do. It's been over 30 years.
  20. Along with the A-B Freedom Fighters, F-5E Tiger should be in the VNAF list Regards Triet
  21. Both VNAF - early and late war scheme Regards Triet
  22. A VNAF AC-130 would be a fiction. I don't believe they ever possessed, borrowed, trained, or flew in one. Though it would be nice if they did. Regards Triet
  23. Hi All. Just a question to clearify the Vietnam War. I know most of us recognized Rolling Thunder, Linebacker II, with Phantoms, Buffs, Hueys in the sky of Vietnam. But there was a Vietnam war way before all that happened when Vietnam was known as French Indo-china. You know ... when HCM was just a guerilla fighter, and the French was still there? So, does this qualify for Vietnam War group build? Regards Triet

    A1-J Skyraider

The Yankee extraction seats were added to all USAF Skyraider late in the war, around 1968, to all of USAF A-1H and A-1J. Also, the older spokes wheel hubs by that time were replaced by the newer solid wheel hubs. So if you are building a late-war USAF bird, you need those two changes. HTH T. Cam
