  1. I can't agree on IL-2 - it gave me the biggest fit trying to fly. I just wanted something I could "fly through" (no pun intended) - I play video games to relax, not wear my mind out; simply in it for the fun factor. IL-2 really wasn't fun - even on easy. Plus the aircraft selection was lousy.

On the other hand - I had a blast on heros over Europe, and it had a fantastic aircraft selection (even an He 219!!!) I can play that one a lot and not get bored or frustrated.

I could literally crash myself in IL-2 by hitting the joy stick at the wrong moment at the wrong rpm... Stupid mess like that.

  2. And these people are allowed to carry weapons?

I mean they need to be told common sense online security points, and then you had them a weapon...

Nice.... makes me feel so confident!

You always so antagonistic? Just from seeing your comments on the KC-X contract winner thread you seem to be a rather hateful person; honestly, I'd hope that isn't the case, but you do seem to not be too fond of western, or more specifically American, culture/military?

Anyway, you ought not throw the whole bunch into a category like that - you make it sound like it's a large number of folks when in all actuality it's a small number of idiots (usually privates and lieutenants being the normal culprits). And some folks genuinely don't know - there's folks out there who are ignorant of the real world (like the folks getting duped by these facebook scams): so yes, some do need to be told, but that doesn't necessitate them being questionable as a servicemember. Now if they can't seem to qualify with a weapon after several hours on the range - then I'd be concerned.

I got off FB simply because it creeped me out that "some people" were apparently snooping on what we grad students were saying to one another about our program and all the vagaries thereof. These "people", sadly, have a lot of sway over my life at the moment, so if I don't have an account, there's nothing they can hold over my head, period.

there's a lot of colleges that are like that, sadly. I know folks at VMI would get busted by the commandant's staff for talking in disgust about certain members behavior of that particular staff on facebook.

There is gigantic traffic and money for it. Arguably, it's facebook's bread-and-butter, especially on college campuses.

Actually, I meant it more rhetorically - I know in the grand scheme of things why, I was just being sarcastic

I use Facebook strictly as a way to keep in touch with friends and acquaintances. I automatically assume that everything I post there will be seen by the entire world, so I never put any remotely sensitive information on there. In fact, I follow that policy in pretty much all my online activity (such as internet discussion forums.)

Right on - same here :bandhead2:

  3. First off - soldiers shouldn't be posting pics of themselves on facebook in their uniform or in their duty environment.... that goes for family members too - despite how "proud" they are of their loved-one.... too much opportunity for a bad opsec mess.

second - why are folks "lookin' for love" on facebook? doesn't that constitute some form of stalking?

  4. One possibility would be to do regional sheets. If one wanted to do say ANG F-4s then you could do a sheet that covered Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana, Minnesota, Texas, etc. Afterburner Decals is going to come out with a set of East Coast and West Coast super hornet sheets. Something like that. East Coast ANG units, West Coast ANG Units. and then something in the middle of the country. It might kill 2 birds with one stone. As much as I want an all NEANG sheet I know that the subject specific sheets (all one type of aircraft) likely sells much better.

true to some extent - but as for that idea, it'd probably be a good idea to go NE for sheet and SE for a sheet and not have one big "east coast" sheet - I can't say i'm interested in guard markings north of the mason-dixon. no offense.......

I still think state specific is the way to go - despite what those outside our borders think - the sheets would still sell, regardless. the variety each state has to offer from over the years would certainly be interesting to see.

  5. The local horse racetrack has had slot-machines for a few years and they want to add table games. On the

late news tonight the talking-head says

"Soon you'll be able to play Russian Roulette along with slots"

Did she just say that :coolio:

I rewinded the PVR.....why yes she did :worship:

They say the house always wins :woot.gif: .......

  6. The "mast" you're seeing is part of the smoke generating system. You can see it clearly serving this purpose under the tail of #6 in this photo on airliners.net:

    http://www.airliners.net/photo/USA---Navy/...cc89a7fa83a10ce

I don't have photographic confirmation, but I wouldn't be surprised if all the Blues had this mod (confirmed for #4 and #6).

#5 in that pic seems to have it - although it's pointed upside down, what I think is white smoke can be seen trailing off the tail - just doesn't stand out so well in the photo because it doesn't have the jet for a backdrop like #6's. I keep having to adjust the laptop screen so I can see it.

    just a thought

  7. Traffic reporter said the truck stalled. I have no clue where it's going or coming from. Don't know of any BA Gate Guards in Michigan.

This was on the East bound side of I-96 near Orchard Lake Road.

awesome pics Sean! thanks for sharing! Hows it been? I haven't seen you post on here in a while...

I think I re-entered the highway 6 times trying to get some photos. Michigan State Police  frown on stopping on the shoulder when it's not an emergency no matter how hard I explain a stalled Blue Angel constitutes a dire emergency .

:thumbsup: I agree, that is a dire emergency!

  8. Having the hose/drogue pods under the wing tips was one of the hard requirements in request for proposal.

    Darwin

Thats interesting, I didn't realize that was part of the requirements! thats pretty smart.

Those drogue refueler things are there for helicopters and USN and USMC planes while the winged solid refueler is for USAF aircraft. So if two F-22's come up, still only one can refuel at a time. This definitely makes it more cross-service friendly. Currently I believe the Navy and USMC are dependent on either buddy refueling or C-130 refueling.

I agree - I know the boom is a one at a time deal, but say for a situation over Afghanistan, one could certainly provide more service to a broader spectrum of aircraft! I like it!

A hose and basket can be attached to KC-135 Booms ... They have to fly that mission refueling only probe type aircraft though ...

KC-10 can refuel both types of systems having both hose and boom systems on board ...

    Gregg

awesome pics Gregg, thanks for sharing! I was sad when the KC-10s had to leave SJAFB... good to see pics of them :nanner: It was a good area for them to begin with; what with all the USAF/USMC/USN aircraft that were in that area...

I look forward to a reasoned discussion of the pros and cons of the decision based on an intimate knowledge of the processes involved.

    Or not.

"in ze soviet russian, deer kill YOU!"

:rolleyes: HAHAHA!!! I want one! Better than a guard dog!

  9. The 9mm vs .45 debate has been going on since at least the 1890s and the Phillipine insurection, so I'll leave that one alone. The point was these are non-US companies that won significant US contracts. FN-USA and Beretta-USA exist as part of these contracts, just as EADS would have done if they won.

True, and FN USA makes some really fine weapons (I am rather fond of them myself  )

Ok, I was just lurking on this post, but I have to say that's just silly. The Beretta 92 is a proven design that has also been around for decades. The gun works - shoots as reliably as any other semi-auto pistol I've had experience with. We can debate the merits of the 9x19 cartridge all day, but it is a standard NATO round. FN built factories here in the US to compete for military contracts, and they are responsible for 70-80% of small arms used in the US military, such as the M2 .50BMG, Mimimi, M249 that were mentioned, all of which are proven designs that work. FN's quality has been more than proven in the fields of Iraq and Afghanistan. So what's the beef? I'm talking from 20 years of law enforcement experience and 23 years of pistol shooting and 3 years in the firearms industry, so I'm no internet commando. Find a better point for debate. Back to the second choice, uh, I mean the winning tanker design.

Not to hijack a thread (this will be my only response on this subject...period.)

    Dearest J grease:

Silly? Please.... the Beretta 92/M9 IS a lousy design, and far choppier in handling than many similar designs in the same category. Glock and SIG have them beat by a mile (and I don't even like Glock, lol... SIG is one of the best in my opinion). AND its really sad when there are .45's (I use this cause a lot of folks complain it kicks too much - though I've never had that problem with it myself...) out there that shoot far smoother than the B.92 ever thought of being (and it shoots the 9mm!). Now, will it shoot every time? for the most part - I've had them jam on me periodically - with older ones being pretty bad about it.

As for FN-Herstal and FN-USA - I'm merely calling into attention where they have these weapons made - I am a big supporter of FN products myself - and I know the quality of their designs as my job requires me to do so. there's no beef there. In fact, I'm proud of them for choosing to put their manufacturing centers in the states - nothing like having a weapon that says "made in Columbia SC" or "Fredricksburg VA", etc... (you get the point)... Sorry if that wasn't quite clear to begin with. They're also pretty reliable designs....

Now, before you go calling someone's personal experience "silly" and telling them to "find a better point of debate"... think! You can present your own thoughts in a way where you're not coming across as insulting. There's a bunch of military folks on ARC from all services and countries on this forum, past and present, who probably have plenty of fireams experience, not to mention law enforcement on here from different parts of the country and world; don't think you're the only one.

    That is all....

  10. are you located out of country? if so, it may be that it's been help of by customs (which, I know the later package came in fine - but that doesn't mean the didn't have a hand in holding up the first) - i had that issue with some stuff I ordered from GB some time back - I ordered it last week of december - and it finally showed up 3 weeks ago Friday.

  11. I don't think it is surprising that domestic companies have an advantage. The US happens to have a large defense industry so yes, the majority of contracts go to US companies. Seems to me the UK and most of Europe favor their own local industries too. The UK, Germany, Italy and France all operate tanks designed and built domestically, and the majority of their aircraft are from domestic or combined European interests.

As far as re-running competitions until a US company wins? I'd say these were significant contracts that went to foriegn designs - Beretta 92 (M9), Sig-Sauer P228 (M11), FN-MAG (M240), FN Minimi (M249), Hawker Harrier (AV-8A, AV-8B), Eurocopter EC-145 (UH-72). Except for the AV-8 all had strong competition from US companies.

The Beretta 92 sucks a**... not to mention the 9mm is lousy... the M240 series and the M249 are pretty good weapons manufactured in Columbia, SC. though there are FN USA only designs, like the FNP series of pistols which are made directly in the US (per their website. these are made in Fredricksburg, VA).

  12. Built practically OOB whilst the guys on the Props forum were busy measuring and remeasuring...

    good point!

I scratch built the starboard wing searchlight as this is missing from the kit.

Excellent Job Darius! I'm excited to get mine! Now I'm inspired, thanks  as for the searchlight, how did you do it? I'm curious :coolio:

Awesome! Looks like a Tracker to me! Now if only it was in the right scale...

Oh but it is! 1/48 is very fitting for a Tracker! anyways, you small scale guys have had your revell and hasegawa kits forever and a day :jaw-dropping:

  13. I guess its sods law that the easiest to come by are the wrong model. The AEW.1 was originally in US service (I think) an AD-4W1. The nearest kits as far as I know are A-1Hs but even these need dive breaks filling & hatches rescribing etc. The Aeromodel conversion would have been ideal but they seem to have come & gone before I got back to modelling & they seem to be unobtanium now.

    Steve.

you're correct, it is an AD-4W - is there a specific reason you want to go with the AEW.1? Cause if it's just a matter of doing one with the radome, then you could easily go with the Monogram A-1E (which is an AD-5).

just a thought, other than that - see if you can get an A-1H in the buy and sell section, or keep searching ebay...
