Weird..... I´ve never had orange peel issues with alclad.
The Orange peel comes at the final stage when you shot the actual metal paint? Only thing I can think is that you shoot from too far away so the paint dries on the way to the surface.
I use about 20 Psi and shoot at about 3-4 inches away, sort of just dust it on, I have a Iwata HP-CH with a 0.3mm needle.
Have you tried another paint jar? it could be that the white alu you´ve used is bad
I've not tried another bottle; but this stuff is pretty much new. I bought it within the last 6 months, and there are large areas where it dried just fine without issue.
Alclad gloss black is notorious for orange peel. The Alclad metal colours are very thin, it could be the orange peel from the gloss black showing through. The Alclad gloss black needs a lot of cutting back with very fine sand paper or micro-mesh or something similar to get rid of the orange peel.
I prefer to use Tamiya's gloss black out of the spraycan.
Hope this helps,
Jeff.
Wow, didn't know that! That is certainly interesting. I'll see what I have that I can use as a base coat substitute.... Thanks for that info!

Outstanding work! looks great!
Only corrective comment I have to make is that it's not VMCJ-3, but rather VMCJ-2 Playboys.

Ok, so I did a search and didn't find anything involving both "Orange peel" and ALCAD II, so now I'm popping the question, what am I doing wrong?
This is my first occasion of using ALCAD II (doing a BMF F-51 and F-80C), so I'm thinking it maybe O.E., but not sure what exactly the issue is....
here's the setting:
Temp: mid to upper 50's (down into the lower 50's after sunset, maybe even upper 40's)
F-51 was going to be a christmas gift for a young kid to play with, so instead of going with primer, I just sprayed the ALCADII gloss black base coat, as the bottle recommends, straight and un-thinned. I let that dry over night. The F-80 on the other hand had a base coat of ALCAD grey primer/microfiller already for some time, so I just sprayed them both with the Gloss Black basecoat at the same time; both drying over night.
approximately 24 hours and dry-to-the-touch later, I applied a coat of ALCAD II White Aluminum to both, with my paasche double action airbrush with the "medium" needle at setting of 10psi +/- (mind you, this was back before Christmas). I sprayed light, even coats over both planes. I did them one at a time to give the other time to dry so I could go back and touch up the other after it had dried for about 20-30 min or so. nothing heavy, just light coats.
I saw some spots of orange peel appear almost instantaneously as I was spraying in certain spots on either kit, so I brought them inside the house to dry since it was a much warmer 72*F so has to help them dry more thoroughly; thinking the issue was just that it might've been too cold or something. I let them dry over night.
I need to specify, orange peel only occured in certain spots, not over the entire model.
The next morning, I came back to check on them and found that in those certain patches, there was some serious Orange peel effect... I didn't mess with the F-80 again as I was on a time hack to get the F-51 finished. So I whipped out my dremel and the buffer pad attachment to see if I could smooth it out and sort of "sand" without cause too much damage. It worked pretty good, so when I had it cleaned up in the spots that needed it, I went and applied the same paint at the same settings/time of day and roughly the same temp. Same result. So in frustration, I took a break till now. :P
And now with the warmer weather, and the urge to paint, I'd like to finish this gift and get it to it's reciever....
Now, I can't say if the base coat for sure had dried thoroughly or not given the temperature - the directions specified at least an hour, I gave it 24, and then applied the white aluminum. I noticed in those orange peel patches, I'd get up spots of the gloss black while trying to buff it out - but that could have been cause the laquer in the white aluminum ate through it while it sat and dried, causing some goofy chemical reaction... I don't know, I went excessive on dry time cause it was colder than I typically like to work in.
I don't think I can say it was from a lack of primer either - the F-80 had the ALCAD primer and gloss black base coat, and had the exact same issues - so I think I can safely say that is not the issue....
Maybe my psi was too high, even at 10? maybe it should've been a bit warmer for the alcad? maybe a bigger needle for the airbrush? I don't know, hence why I'm asking you ALCAD experts out there.
So, with that, what are ya'll's thoughts and recommendations?
many garcias,
Justin

How about the option of " I don't build 1/72 cause its too stinkin small"?
I want a model, not a "micro machine". This is one of those cases where I think bigger is better. just more fun. As for shelf space, not a problem; issue is when I run out of ceilling..... Both my 1/48 AC-130 and B-1B are going to be "gear up" and hung from a ceilling whenever I get around to 'em! Now won't that be fun
And I don't have a big house either in case anyone was wondering.....I can only manage a "man corner".....

I have actually built a car or two in the semi-recent past ...
Can we see some proof?
there is, after all, a "display case" section of the forum, and I for one am interested in some physical proof of said models :D after all, a model from Gregg is like spotting a Dodo... The only thing rarer is the "loch ness monster" of completed models..... Something from the Bench of Holmes!
So let's see 'em

Nobody's even tried yet ... :)

A lovely tune - probably one of the few I can still playThats a great song, I think my favorite right now is The B-52 - really awesome Hornpipe :D !

I wonder if the script writer got the caliber (7.62mm) and the cartridge length (25mm) mixed up and no one caught it.
Thats what it looks like - cause the way it's mentioned in the show makes it sound like a hand-held gun capable of firing rounds the same caliber as an Apache chain-gun.... when in all reality its smaller than a .40 SW.
funny!

Quick update:
finally heard back from some guys over on the netgear forum (you guys are fast! and helpful!! they are sloooow, lol...), and apparently it's a chipset compatibility issue between the N600 (netgears top of the line from what I've seen in my local stores) and the Xbox 360 - just figured I'd throw that out there for anyone who's a console gamer looking into a router... I asked about the PS3 out of consideration (don't have one, but figured it be good to find out for others...), and will pass that on if I hear anything.
please note, this is in regard to a wired, ethernet, connection, not wireless.
-
I took it back to staples today and switched the netgear our for the cisco linksys of the same equivelent - and it worked right off the bat!!! NO ISSUES
The guys at the store were baffled as well - but they said this one works better, and in 15 min, it already has!
So, in short, problem solved! Thanks for the input!

Xbox Live connectivity requires external access to some of the ports on the router, so you will need to set up your router accordingly. Before we get there, I assume you tried at least a couple different cables and plugging it into different ports on the router to rule out a problematic cable or router connector. Can you confirm?
The following pages have good information, and reflects the setup that I have in my house. Can you do an Xbox Live connectivity check and let us know what it says?

http://rogerdickeyjr.com/how-to-setup-your...warding-part-2/
First off, thanks for the help! I'll definitely save those websites for later. As is stands though, that still doesn't address the problem. I have tried several different cables, and a combination of plugging them into the router and modem. when plugged directly into the modem, everything works great. when I direct link the xbox into the router - it doesn't even show up. i.e. the Router doesn't recognize anything is attached and doesn't assign a ip address... when the computer is hooked up, direct link into the router and not wireless, it shows up just fine. I've tried this with all 4 ports on my particular router and computer shows up, xbox doesn't.
as for the xbox live conectivity check - I can't run it when xbox doesn't realize its hooked to something - the error mentioned in the first post tells me to hook up a ethernet cable, when it's already hooked up. so, until I can get the router to realize the xbox is hooked up, and get it to assign it some sort of address to it - I can't run the connectivity.
BTW, my nat settings are open - I'd assign a DMZ, but alas, I can't get an address....
does that make any more sense??

Hey Guys!
Posted this over in the netgear forums, but I figured there are probably those within our ranks that understand the situation better! I'm just copy & pasting as I'm pretty worn out from trying to figure this out....
...so here goes.....
I just got the Netgear N600 (WNDR3700v2) today, and have hooked it up in my house. Wireless works great. plugging the laptop into the router works perfectly fine; however, the Router will not recognize that the xbox is plugged in (NOTE: I'm hardlining my Xbox with an ethernet cable, and not going the wireless route). Talked things through with both the Netgear tech support folks, and the xbox live tech support folks, and they're both baffled...I understand the concept of plugging things in just fine - but I have no clue why the router will not show the xbox as being plugged into any of the ports, when it is. I tried direct linking the xbox directly to the modem as I've done many times before - works like a charm, no issue. I go back to plugging it into the router; doesn't exist. when I check it on the xbox side, the only message I get is "To use a wired internet connection, make sure an ethernet cable is connected to both your console and your router or modem.", and it is - so I am at a loss for what to do. Computer still works fine on either the wifi or the direct link to the router - so the router ports seems to be working just fine. Modem works just fine. I'm even using cat 6 cables on both the computer and the xbox, and still nothing (I even used the cat 6 when direct linking the xbox to the modem to ensure that it wasn't a cable issue; but I used the same cable on the computer when linking to the modem).
I'll be honest, I don't really understand the technical aspects of the setting up a router - I can make passwords for the wifi, and thats about it. as far as stuff like "port forwarding", etc... goes, I haven't a clue. So if anyone out there has an idea about whats going on, I'd love to hear it.
once again, when computer is plugged into a port ("1, 2, 3, 4"), light comes on and there's a connection; when my xbox 360 is plugged into any port, no light comes on and there's nothing saying it's connected. When xbox is plugged into modem, works perfectly fine. Cat 6 was used in setup (replacing cat 5). both cat 5 & 6 have been used with computer when linking to router, both work perfectly fine. any ideas?
Thanks!
sooooo...any takers??

Facing down a dozen unmanned battle droids programmed to kill, there's no one I'd rather have at my side.
He still sounds like a whiney housewife.......... Do you have to hold his hand when he gets scared? Help him find his hairbrush? Take out the garbage and clean the kitty litter while yer at it?!!

Good luck. Have you ever tried to babysit Tony and get him to do what you need him to do? The man is unbelievable. Ask me about the time he stood me up in Las Vegas. They told me that if I presented him with an award, he'd be deeply honored...of course, just try to get him to show up to receive the presentation.
You sound like such a nagging little housewife!!!!! whining away in some cubical in a dark, forgotten corner of the headquarters building they asigned you to....... I wouldn't want to go to an awards banquet hosted by you either.....

Wow, checked my stash yesterday and of course I have one, still in the shrinkwrap.
That should fetch you at least $150 then.....not including shipping.....

Only has one JDAM in each set? Hasegawa sure does know how to make you buy more than one of these weapon sets!
Did you watch the video at the top of the thread? It has "Hasegawa" written all over it..... Maybe it'll help you understand their philosophy?
