  1. Spent some time in Arizona recently going to the Pima Air and Space Museum and the Davis-Monthan Air Show. The museum was absolutely awe-inspiring. One of the places that any aviation nut should be required to visit. Didn't get to do the AMARG tour, unfortunately because time was at a premium. Maybe next time. Anyway, here's the photos from the museum. Shots of the air show will be coming soon. Enjoy!

The whole time I was stuck in NM (*cough* land of entrapment *cough*), I wanted to go to both, but never did. No excuses, really; just didn't feel like driving all that way - heck silver city was a heck of a drive as it was. Don't know if I'll ever get there now, but hey, I'm freeeeeee!:coolio:

  2. Hi guys, I am getting close to painting with my build (am I lazy :) ) and had a change of heart about the color scheme I want to use. I liked how f-4 looks in all dark/medium greens. However, I really don't know what I want, am little bit confused since I know almost nothing about the F-4E colors. Here is the situation:

Since I like the green look I had a search and learnt that USAF had a color scheme called "euro I". In this scheme, there are basically two tones of greens and one dark gray (FS34079, FS34102 and RLM 74??? ). However, I found pictures of F-4E where the dark gray looked like another very dark tone of green or almost black which I liked even more. Is this due to weathering or is there another scheme that I need to know about?

Also, if you guys could have figured out what I am talking about, is there any decals for this "darker" F-4E in the market? I checked afterburner decals, and all they have is the regular euro I scheme birds.

I could be wrong (and biased :thumbsup2: , having lived in Goldsboro), but I'll say Afterburner's 4th FW double ugly part II is your best shot.

Best of my knowledge is that it was always grey, not a darker shade of green or black.

[Original quote:... to produce the most important warplane of the most important air force in Europe during WWII...] No, it's not. It's in the eye of history. Three-quarters of German casualties occurred on the Eastern Front, and a goodly number of them were done in by the Shturmovik, which the German soldiers called the "Fleischer", the "Butcher". Since nearly a third of the aeroplanes in the Red Air Force from 1942 on were Shturmoviks, it was the most important aeroplane in the Red Air Force. Perhaps you are disputing that the Red Air Force was the most important air force in Europe. The United States Army Air Forces were certainly very important, as was the Royal Air Force, but despite the tremendous damage done to the Reich by the strategic bombing campaign, the long, bloody job of actually destroying the Werhmacht on the ground was done by the Red Army and the Red Air Force. By the time the strategic bombing campaign really got rolling in 1943, the Soviets had already mortally wounded the Werhmacht, and no amount of production from intact factories was going to change that fact, even if there had been no strategic bombing. Strategic bombing no doubt shortened the war, and made the Red Army's job much easier (and saved a lot of Soviet lives), but it was not decisive; the Red Army's defeat of the Werhmacht was.

    Regards,

    Jason

As I said, it's all in the eye of the beholder... as far as the Il-2's merits within the VVS, or for the fact it was the most produced, etc... I don't argue. My point was with the VVS being asserted as "the most important".... I disagree to varying degrees. I'd say RAF, Luftwaffe and USAAF would be top of the block for sure - especially with the fight the RAF was putting up against the Luftwaffe onslaught.

"Better" is merely a matter of opinion; even among historians... :coolio:

As for the Il-2, I find it an interesting bird, and interesting that Tamiya decided to choose it for their next "new thing". Would I ever build one? Probably not any time soon - Luftwaffe takes up too much of my time as is :) .

  6. Hey Otto,

I have one of those goofy ESCI kits myself, and I had a bit of a crazy idea: what if I were to use it to make a A2D?

The thought occured to me the other day, while looking at some Skyshark stuff, that I'm not using the ESCI kit for anything (I'm just pillaging it for stuff - like the guppy radome for instance; it's going to my AD-5W project) - so why not do some cosmetic experimentation?

I figured it's nothing a little miliput can't fix. Since you have the ESCI too, what are your thoughts?

  7. So it's widely believed that the aircraft crashed or was deliberately ditched. Yet, the ejection seats were not fired which adds some questions as to what really happened.

Well - it being the first aircraft equipped with ejection seats, and being over the water and all, maybe they didn't want to take chances whereas a water landing was a sure bet?

  8. I seriously doubt they'll be able to restore it as it was submerged in saltwater (the North Sea) and subjected to very strong tides. It was actually first discovered some years ago a few hundred meters off the coast by divers and multiple items have been removed over the years. Oddly enough, despite a very comprehensive research into WWII crashes over Danish territory, this airframe has still not been identified.

There're a few pics from the salvage operation on this Danish forum:

    Thanks for sharing

I figured it'd be highly improbable if it was in saltwater; I wonder why they're so optimistic about restoration in the article?
