  2. Not enough. I just spent two hours yesterday working on my mozzie cockpit - but that's the most I've done since Monday or Tuesday.... It's been raining on and off here this week, so I've not had the opportunity to paint my different airframes like I'd like. Doesn't help I'm working on my distance learning courses at night either - that takes up some time :(

  3. Very Good to know!! I was gonna ask the same thing! Good to see you too man! Hope all is well!!

All is great! How's things with you?

That is some good info - never thought of nor considered that before. I admit, I had some funny thoughts of paint bottles getting yelled at by R Lee Ermy when I first saw that comment... hahaha...

  4. Justin,

Just do NOT use Gunze Sangyo Mr. Super Clear Flat over acrylics , it kind of melts the paint ... Use Gunze Top Coat on acrylics

    Thanks for the tip!

Anyone else have any input with the ALCAD II stuff I mentioned??

  5. After you've thinned it, run it through a fine wire mesh sieve, or at least a scrap of nylon hosiery. Strainers for this can be purchased at various places online like MicroMark. I think I saw them at Roll Models or Sprue Brothers, too.

Once bottled or caned, all paint gradually develops clumps and particles that don't redisperse when the paint is stirred (and definitely not when shaken). Some form from particles of dried paint on the throat or sides of the container, but others just form on their own. The only paints I don't strain before airbrushing are metallics. Once a metallic paint starts to develop clumps that won't redisperse, it's time to dump it and get new. This is because of the nature of metallic pigments. Note that you should strain after thinning (reducing) the paint.

    Thanks! thats good to know!

  6. Happened with a Skyraider too - pilot forgot to put the wings down prior to take off (seems a strange thing to forget with them being as obvious as they would be on that particular aircraft - guess his mind must've been somewhere else at the moment) and didn't realize his error till he was already airborne (the shadow the wing cast caught his attention...). I can't remember off the top of my head how it turned out - I'm thinking he was able to land it, could be wrong though - been a few years since I had the info in front of me last.

  7. Hey Ya'll,

about to put an order through to Sprue Brothers, and saw some interesting things that caught my attention, so I'm curious if they're worth getting.

1: Gunze Sangyo Mr. Super Clear Flat (and Mr Super Clear Flat UV Cut for that matter...): Is it any good? specifically when used over a coat of future? And does the UV cut do the job of preventing whites from yellowing? (thinking about this with my two-tone A-6 in mind) I seem to remember hearing stories about white "yellowing" over time due to sun exposure, ect..., so if thats the case I'm wondering if this'll do the job.

2: Alcad II Gloss Klear Kote/ Flat Klear Coat, ect...ect... Is this stuff any good on the NMF jobs? Common sense would say it would... but then I know my "gloss black base" experience (orange peel on painting a NMF Mustang and F-80)...

3: While on the subject of Alcad.... How are their "hotmetal" and "transparent" colors? They look cool, but are they worth forking out the $5 a bottle?

    Any info would be welcomed!

    TIA,

    Justin

  8. Intruder 500, call the ball! Looking good so far...can't wait to see more updates.

    Aaron

Thanks Aaron! I'll get some stuff on here pretty soon.

How's that B-58 going? I'd like to see that one if it's finished.

    RYAN.

    Hey Ryan!

it's going at the moment, I'm prepping it for another coat of paint now, I can post some updated pics here soon....well, as soon as I fix one of the engines and the pitot tube...... I had stuck it under the desk sometime last year while taking a break from it, and somehow in the process the far port engine got knocked off. So I have to fix that; the pitot tube wasn't a surprise to me since it was under the desk.... anyhoo, the SEA scheme is coming along nicely.

Hows that B-36 of yours coming along?

    take care,

    Justin

  9. Here's another build I started end of last year, been waiting for paint. Pretty easy kit for the most part - mostly OOB with some scratchbuilt modifications/repairs. Until I cracked this kit open, I hadn't realized just how big a Do 335 was (in comparison to fighters of the day - it pretty much dwarfs most fighters from what I can tell); it's a pretty impressive plane. I remember reading something about one that was being escorted to Cherbourg France from somewhere in Germany (I think it might've been Munich, can't remember off the top of my head); it and the two escort P-51's took off at the same time, and the 335 beat them there by a full 45 min. So I heard anyway :)

Anyways, onto the kit... I don't have much in the way of in progress pics for this particular kit - I thought about it after I had most of it together, so there's some close ups of the scratch-built work. anyhoo, here's where it's at right now:

    First off, the Kit boxing:

    where I left off:

You may notice the gear is up on this one as well - this is going to be another ceilling bird.

    Here's a size comparison with a same-scale P-51:

    IMG_8410.jpg

Now for the scratch work. As I mentioned above, some stuff got broken in the kit (probably while in-transit). Only one major modification was done on the kit, and that was the propeller hub (or whatever it's called, I don't know the technical term...). On the front prop of the 335, it had a centerline-firing MK 103 cannon. Monogram's handling of this detail was a shallow depression in the end - not quite satisfactory enough for me. So I took some brass tubing and cut a barrel from it and drilled out the hole for the "cannon". turned out quite nice, though I had to nip the tip of the plastic rod that the prop goes on in order for it to fit. Here's the pre and post painting (I thought I had a pic of the hub prior to modification, but I can't find it):

    IMG_8405.jpg

I think it turned out quite nice. Looks a heck of a lot better than Monogram's option...

now, one of the things that was busted was the plastic rod for the rear prop, somehow it went awol; so I came up with a quick fix. I took a peice of copper rod the diameter of the opening on the rear prop, glue that together, and it looked something like this:

    IMG_8406.jpg

Now, the next step was to drill a hole in the rear of the plane where the plastic rod had originally stuck out at, and insert a piece of brass tubing just barely bigger in diameter than the copper rod on the prop. Here's what I had:

    IMG_8403.jpg

and finally, had to work on the pitot tube. It broke off during construction (it was already badly bent, so I didn't anticipate it lasting very long anyway), that was a simple fix of some brass pipe and tubing. I think it turned out pretty nice:

    IMG_8401.jpg

all in all, pretty smooth sailing. I hadn't gotten to paint the cockpit yet, as the last cockpit I had been working on was the 110 (which will get the same treatment here directly, but it has more actual "in-progress" photos).

That's it for now, will post more during the painting process.

  10. I have (all 1/48 btw):

I have to throw this one out first: 8 A-1 Skyraiders :D

    6 x Ju 88 (two are 188's, and one is a Mistel)

    6 x Do 335 ( 3 x A-1's [1 on the bench], 2 x B-2's, 1 x A-12)

    5 x Me 410

    3 x He 219 (1 on the bench)

    2 x Bf 109

    2 x Me 110 (1 one the bench)

    2 x Me 262

    2 x Ju 87

    2 x Ta 154

    2 x Ar 234

    2 x He 111
