  1. Thanks for all the comments. I've used Tamiya fine primer and tamiya gloss white enamel with much better results.
  2. Beautiful colorful stuff. I'm currently doing mine in the conventional sea grey/white and I'll be happy if it turns out half as nice as yours.
  3. Great work Axel! Camo and detail is beautiful. The interior is just fantastic Could just I point out that no-one in the SAAF ever wore a pith helmet though?
  4. I know that white finishes can be a mission. I'm struggling to finish my Navy hi-viz F4J as I keep finding parts where the white turned out less than smooth and even after a coat of clear varnish my pastel wash is staining the paint and can't be rinsed off. It appears as if the worst culprit is Humbrol white. I primed the parts with a Humbrol light grey and most of the model is fine mostly where I used Tamiya white. I don't have easy access to anything other than Humbrol and Tamiya products. My next model calls for white again and I don't want another episode of multiple resprays! Any tips o
  5. I'm currently finishing off one that my son wasn't getting round to completing. The rigging is definitely the trickiest part and requires some planning. The string supplied with the model got a bit battered being taped up while assembly was taking place. So a replacement for that is a good idea. Other wise I can't report too many issues. It assembles into a sizeable plane. I'm considering getting myself one, but I've got a few to go in my stash and I don't like confusing myself with too many choices.
  6. Hi, MAV Decal has a complete range of SAAF decals. If you don't find any others
  7. Poli Orea, Periklis. Great Work and Great Pictures. It will be quite a body of work when you're done. Please consider putting it all in one place with lots of tips and techniques for those who have lots to learn.
  8. Hi Vlamgat, You are quite right that there is no exact match for the buff. I used Humbrol 63 ( I think) which looks fine if you don't put it right next to the original, and I don't rate my ability to change paint tints! I can't remember which grey I used, I eyeballed one that looked closest to the one in my reference pictures. Let me know if you mix the perfect colors
  9. Hi Gary, Thanks for looking. The Mav Decals were reasonably accurate ito color and some small details like the the springboks on the castle emblems facing inwards on the wings are correct. The decals come on a single sheet and need to be cut out individually. It was my first time doing this and I left too much of the clear sheet around some of the emblems. The tail flash was a bit too big and I think that the writing for the nose( Mirage F1CZ) was also a little too big). I would use them again though.
  10. Hi, This is my South African Air Force Mirage F1CZ, finished in the Buff and Olive Drab camo of the 1980's. I built it out of the box, utilising the parts that would make it look like the F1 of the vintage that I was after. I used SAAF decals from MAV. Unlike many of the heavily armed kites that we see on this site the F1's that I saw flew mainly armed only with wingtip missiles and I added the belly tank mainly to cover my less than perfect bottom seam. In later years the F1's were painted a more modern grey shaded scheme, but I always loved this particular pattern. The Mirage F1 is tiny wh
  11. This is fantastic so far. Can't wait to see you do more. Do you really hand paint all those small details in the bays?
  12. Here is my South African Air Force Mirage F1CZ. I building it from a newish Italeri Mirage F1 CT in 1/48 scale. There is not much modification required to produce a SAAF F1CZ of the era that I'm reproducing. I removed some of the incorrect antennae and left off the inflight refuelling probe and some of the other bits and pieces. The buff and olive drab camo scheme is one of my all time favourites and has turned out ok. The 'buff' could be a bit more orange. I need to do a bit of touching up and then its ready for a gloss coat.
  13. Hi Laurent, I've always loved the buff and olive camo. It looks really nice. I'm working on a Italieri F1 at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to post it soon. Seeing yours has made me keen to see mine completed.
  14. Thanks, I actually used your very detailed description of your build on IPMSSA's website to help avoid some of the problems. I managed to create some all of my own though!
  15. Hi, This is my first model posting on ARC. After building very casually since I was a boy, I've now started to use an airbrush and employ techniques like panel line washes for the first time. I've learned a lot from looking at everyone's work so here's one pf my own. The Airfix Buccaneer in 1/48 isn't the best kit in the world. The fit of some of the parts is poor, especially the folding airbrake that makes up the tail cone. I foolishly tried to build it closed and even with lots of dryfitting and putty I was unable to get it flush with the fuselage. The cockpit is very basic with decals and
