  1. hawkwrench -- I am not sure about that. You don't pass through any of the base gates. You turn into the gate entry, but you'll take the immediate right into the parking lot about 50 feet before the gate sentry. It's a weird situation...I think it started out as an extension of base billeting (not enough VOQs on base for all the training the base does) but was later privatized. I am pretty sure it is staffed by federal employees (or contract support to federal employees), so it is probably federal property. I am also a conceal carry holder and we have our monthly meetings there
  2. Hello! This is a reminder that the IPMS Region 4 Convention, held in Dayton, Ohio, is only a few weeks away. My IPMS chapter, Wright Field Scale Modelers, has once again been selected to host the IPMS Region 4 convention. Previous regionals we have hosted have drawn as many as 700 contest entries, and we're expecting a similarly large turnout for 2017. As usual, our show will feature a legendary raffle, huge vendor area, and our highly acclaimed online model registration, which saves you from having to print your own forms. Also, we have some interesting seminars lined up for our patrons
  3. I ordered the Sopwith Snipe late on Sunday 20 Sept. It was on my doorstep Friday afternoon, 25 Sept. Outstanding service from the WW team, and a big kudos to the USPS and the NZ carrier. Unbelievable! It's my 3rd kit from them and won't be the last….
  4. I am looking for the Planet N-1M in 1/72 scale, and it looks like Model Hobbies has it in stock. They are in the UK, I'm in the US. Has anyone had any dealing with them? Are they reputable? I've never bought from an overseas dealer...is there anything to be aware of? TIA! Paul
  5. Try the Wright Field Scale Modelers show in April at the Hope Hotel....you won't be disappointed! I always go to Cinci and it is a fantastic day...great vendors, excellent models....
  6. I want to do Bader's Tangmere Spitfire in 1/72 scale....I bought an old kit but the decals are yellow and look like they may not hold up....I'm wondering if there's a replacement set of decals? Thanks in advance! Paul
  7. My Aria build continues with the TF-33 engines. Does anyone have any references for how to paint them? Specifically, I'm looking for what colors and demarcation line locations for the inside portion of the housing. I can't find any reference photos....I suspect they had an aluminum band around the front but I've no idea how far in that extended....or whether the interior was white or the same gray as the outside. Any thoughts/photo's/suggestions? Thanks in advance! Paul
  8. The PDF came with the kit. In the picture right above step 2, you can see he has attached the MLG bulkheads to the center, lower wing section already. This is a little out of order from the instructions as the instructions say to mount these three pieces (i.e. fore, aft, and center bulkheads) to the long cockpit floor. I assume he did that to make sure there wasn't a gap there. The problem I'm having, though, is that the center, lower wing section is basically flat. When I mate the bulkheads to it, only the center portion of the fore and aft bulkheads actually touch. I have to pull up on
  9. If you haven't built the kit, you won't have the advice/answers I'm looking for....but here's a few for now: - What's the best way to build up the main landing gear bay. - Do I need to correct the gap between the lower wing fuselage and the rear MLG bulkhead, or will that resolve itself in later steps. I'm looking for specific feedback on this particular kit, not general model building advice. There's a number of issues with the kit that I need to work through and I could use some first hand experience....hopefully you have seen it?
  10. I am building this kit for a friend and have a few questions if anyone has build it before....
  11. I am doing the brown tint....the decals look too bright out of the box. I'll try posting when I do it. I like your build so far...looking forward to the rest of it! I figure if it wasn't a mistake by WNW then I would trust their research, and your explanation makes sense... Thanks!! Paul
  12. I had trouble with the lozenge around the tubular frame as well...since it was an option, i didn't do it. Same with the decal on the firewall. However, I think the blow dryer trick would have solved both of these issues.....
  13. I am building the WnW Fokker D7 (Alb), option D (Hermann Pritsch, Jasta 17). I've applied the fuselage and lower wing decals and sat back to admire my work when I noticed a distinct difference in the losenge pattern between the fuselage and wings. The wing has 5 colors, but the fuselage has 4. Is that normal, or is there a mistake in the decal call outs? Just wondering...I'm not sure there's anything I can do about it at this point, but I am curious. If you have the kit, you need to see the lozenge instructions on their website. A friend didn't and tried to use the standard approach with

    Spitfire Mk IXe

I want to build Ezer Weisman's black Spitfire. I understand it is a Mk IXe, which is externally similar to a Mk XVI. Does anyone have recommendations for which kit? I'm not a rivet counter....reasonable shape and detail is acceptable. Any suggestions would be appreciated...thanks in advance! Paul
  15. Guided tours of the restoration facility are on Friday afternoon only and require a valid ID....there are limited quantities, so check online to make sure you know the process if that's a desire/option. Two great hobby shops in the area: Smitty's and The Hobby Shop. You should Google them for directions. They are about 25 minutes from the museum. The museum has enough to keep you busy though if that's too far. Besides the main museum buildings, there is a Presidential/R&D hangar that's actually on the base itself. You have to sign up for the bus that will take you on base and drop y
