  1. AH! The hold back FITTING! That makes so much sense!. Thanks, Foxbat. That explains why it is no longer seen.
  2. It's interesting you say that because I watched the vid a few more times. It looks like the launch bar doesn't quite line up with the "jig" and is riding on top of it. The green shirt then grabs the hold back and seems to use it to guide the launch bar down into the track. Once the launch bar does fall into the track, the green shirt releases the holdback. We could be way off, but i'm glad with the theory!
  3. Thanks, Wardog. I'm actually talking about the long metal plates that seem to mounted to the deck. About 10 feet or so long and 4-6 inches high.
  4. Gents, here's a vid of flight deck ops on the Big E back in the day.My question is, at 2:27, right after the Tomcat squats, you see an elongated "thing" sitting behind the actual shuttle. I've seen this often in old clips, but this "thing" is now gone from current decks. What is it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xFpHCL2Ep4
  5. I believe the Zulus are now the model being used by the USMC? Anyone?
  6. I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend.... They spoke to LCDR Mark Dunleavy (a slot pilot) about why they don't do it. Dunleavy's response was that the top brass was very concerned about a tire blowout on landing causing a major catastrophe. BTW, I'd love to see a video of them taxiing out with the wings folded. They should definitely re-incorporate that!
  7. Thanks. Me too. All I ever heard was, "Those were the A-4's that did that. Not the Hornets." 18 years I heard that!!!
  8. For years I've told others who are Blues enthusiasts that they used to do a Diamond landing. Not a soul ever believed me. Well, after going hunting, I finally found a video to prove it. The whole show is a lot different than today's, but there it is at 17:55. I feel so vindicated!
  9. I've never seen a Delta landing , but, as God is my witness, I saw the Diamond land as a unit at Miramar in 1998. No one ever believes me when I tell them that, but it happened. My girlfriend (now wife) was also there to see it. Both of our jaws dropped.
  10. Fellas, I was talking to an old buddy of mine about TopGun back in the day when it was still at Miramar. He told me when he went there he took one of his squadron's line aircraft because the school itself didn't have specific jets for the students to fly. Was this standard practice or a fluke occurrence? All he could tell me was his experience - and that was in 1989. TIA
  11. As to the Aardvarks jet in the picture, in my limited knowledge, VF-114 was never aboard Independence (CV-62) as listed in the top right of the camera footage.
  12. Fellas, What is the Tomcat carrying in the Phoenix station at 3:51 - 4:02? It's new to me! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-vSinNEmso
  13. I couldn't find it either. I actually found a VHS copy on eBay.
  14. Glad i could be of assistance. ;)
  15. I had been looking everywhere for this video and finally found it. Figured I'd share it with the rest of you.
  16. And what exactly is HAC? as in "put in HAC twice by me." That's a new one to me.
  17. LOL. Fair enough. The pickle switch goes high during a fouled deck (an aircraft or object in the landing area while another aircraft is inbound - for those who don't know), down low for a clear deck.
  18. Yep. Another good catch. For bonus points, who can list the condition that warrants a pickle switch to be held above the LSO's head, as opposed to down low? :)
  19. I just now noticed the very same thing!
  20. Good catch fellas. After reading your posts, I went back and paused the shot only to see that it does in fact look like it was raining (moisture falling off the right nacelle) during that particular shot.
  21. I think we can all agree the first 4 minutes of Top Gun is some of the finest in film history. My question is, when attached to the cat in zone 5 looking aft (3:39-3:41 of this clip), what is the liquid falling to the deck directly behind the jet?
  22. Yep. You are correct. At best since 2002.
  23. That's what I suspected. Why the change from the old circular spot markings?
  24. Fellas, I recently zoomed in on the TR and Truman in Norfolk. I noticed some deck markings that I had not seen before. Along the port side there are numerous upsidedown "Ts" with numbers from 1-8. Can you guys school me on what these are used for? Thx.
  25. I know this sounds like I'm being a snob, but no notams would be published for that specific fly-over since it's already in a tfr. It actually requires "waivers" to be filed with the tracon. Thats so the ATC controller can legally vector the Bules over the castle. I'm just saying because I know there are at least a few student pilots on here and I don't want them to get confused about notams.
