  1. I think you are doing a GREAT job ! @ 1/72 scale I think your job on the kit exhausts is just fine. Allan
  2. WoW !! Really nice !! I have this kit with all kinds of resin and PE and always thought about cutting the turtleback open. You have done an excellent job. I'm going to save your build for the year or two from now when I get around to mine. Thanx for sharing !!!! Allan
  3. Hi and Thanks. I'm going with the one piece canopy, it fits perfectly so no problem there. I will mask it using ParaFilm. I'm going to try the kit masks for the national insignia even tho the star points are not "sharp" enough. If that fails I do have some aftermarket insignia and plenty of setting solution. The kit decals are the stiffest decals I've ever seen, and it takes far too much setting solution on them. I don't know how I got the cockpit decals to work except that they did fit the instruments. The PE torpedo director was not as bad as I thought it would be. It's amazing those 5 sm
  4. Hi Sorry for the no progress, girlfriend is on a house hunting binge so between that and upgrading the existing house that's all we've been doing recently. (you would think that being retired gives one lot's of time... NOT !) That and after the front lower inst panel broke free and all the time I spent just getting it in there in some fashion, I had to take a break. I did sand and sand and sand the segmented canopy sections, but no joy. And after cutting off the observers section of the full canopy I (and you too) are left with a VERY thick piece of canopy. I thought about sanding it from th
  5. After your incredible F 4 build I'll be glued here no matter how long it takes you ! Thanx for sharing Allan
  6. Hi. Very nice. I didn't even pay attention that they had released a new 1/48 Flogger who hoo !!!!! IF that's the OOB cockpit you did an excellent (!) job with it. Can't wait to see more ! Makes me want one.......... Allan
  7. Hi. Don't fret about the wingroot gaps. From what I can see here if you pull the wings up to get the proper dihedral, it looks like the gap will disappear. Great start, keep it up ! Allan
  8. Yeah, I almost want to give up but just can't. Once upon a time, stopping on a kit was no problem. But with a $60 kit and kit prices these days in general ? I have to finish. An it's not that the kit is soo fiddly, because it is, I'm just rusty and got in a little hurry in places that came back to bite me later. (like getting a blob of Tamiya putty on top of left inner wing = sand and rescribe just for starters...) Back with more soon. Allan
  9. Nice work so far ! I have a bunch of these (academy MiG 21's) and all kinds of aftermarket to go with them (and a stash of OEZ MiG 21's he he...) so every time I see someone crack open the Academy kit I get excited. Thanx for posting the build ! Allan
  10. Hi all Sorry for no updates recently, just too much stuff around the home and relatives visiting etc. I now have a basement to work in and have more space and quiet. Bad news is I got the model almost ready to paint and while sanding found that the lower inst panel broke free and got lodged in the bomb aimers crawlway. After almost two hours I got it out and in the process broke off the DF loop... After about another hour or so I figured I cold never get the lower inst panel back into it's place so I managed to get it glued to the firewall in a slightly lower position. Oh well. Been fightin
  11. Wow, fast response from you guys !! Thanx ! One more quickie if ya all don't mind. I've heard about puttin down a little puddle of Future and laying the decal on. Really ? I use Floquil Crystal Clear for my gloss finishes, LOVE the stuff. But I've heard that Future can give as good or shiner finish ? I now have the Flory washes, (not used them yet) but how does Future react with the old fashioned oil sludge wash ? (what I'm used to) Wow, this is fun ! I'm just getting back to my TBD-1 Devastator build, will post pic's this weekend. Allan
  12. Hi and thanx for the great thread here everyone. I just got a little 4 oz bottle of Future to try and this has all been very informative to me. I've always polished canopies out (I use Tamiya plastic polish, or Novus) but after hearing about Future for years am giving it a try. So any other tips for using it please do let me know. Now... When you say *dip* a canopy in Future, do you really dunk the whole thing in it ? Can you brush Future on ? And spraying it. I've heard that you thin it a little with Windex. True ? Thanx a whole lot.
  13. Ya doing great. I got another one lying around here and will do it one day... I've been thinking about the hobby boss F4F3 I can dream too......
  14. Hi ya Great start so far, it is a good fun little kit. I still have my build of it around, the model is rugged like it's real life counterpart. Couple of things. You still can cut out the sides of the floor as like the real thing. Very simple to do. Also the kit engine has no pushrods or wiring, another simple fix. I also could not get rid of the seam at the bottom of the rear gear well/firewall totaly, but tried real hard Can't wait to see more
