The clear base can be used in place of gloss black if desired. The gloss black is best suited for highly polished or mirror-like finishes. It basically does the same job in that it lays down a smooth, glossy surface to apply the metalizers.

Thanks, but perhaps I wasn’t clear enough. The website recommends the clear for the same high polished finishes as the black. So why would they make two similar products that does the same job for the same paints?  The clear base must provide a different finish, so what does it do that is different than black?

  2. The alclad website lists their clear base coat as being used for high shine finishes along with the gloss black base. But it doesn’t specify when to use one over the other. Anybody use it?  I have used the gloss black base all time.  What would the clear base provide for me?  What colour should be under the clear?  Is it for models modded in black styrene, that just need to be glossed up?

    Thanks

  3. To those that have paid for kits, thank you,  they have been shipped. For those that have made inquiries, I am working through them the best I can. I did not expect this level of response to such a half a donkey approach to me posting some photos. Many emails seem to be going into spam and private messages seem to disappear into the ether. If you really want to get in touch with me please keep trying, and if possible always list which kits you are referring to and where you are looking to have them sent. Also I have since found out that shipping one kit at a time is not that expensive, still not cheap, but reasonable.  Please no more inquiries about the ZM 1:32 skyraider. That thing needs a pallet, and Canada Post executives will be able to retire on the profits from putting that box in mail. No joke, the shipping cost is nearly double the retail price. Delivery to the Hamilton show is the best option.

    Thank you

Mine was Leisure World here in London, They had a wall of kits about 40 feet long and 12 feet high.

Mike are you making it to Hamilton in March ?

    Don

Leisure World, there were 3 in Kingston back in the day, one in each mall.  I spent a lot of money there in the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. The first hobby shop only store was Lloyd Shales.  Woolco and Kmart were really good shops here in Kingston. Actually I still have a micro drill bit set from Woolco, still has the price tag on it, with a few remaining bits. Likely a few other tools too.

  5. Have a look at the instructions from Fundekals F-4 stencils release. I just started to read the over 200 pages of outstanding free research, and I believe the information you are after is in there. As I am doing exactly the same kit and markings you are.

  6. I started the ZM D, paused while building it to build the Tamiya B, and have gone back to the D.  While the Tamiya kit is an easier build, it does not make the ZM kit inferior. I kind of bought into the whole zen approach to the ZM kit, and I do feel it left me with a more complete building experience. However looking at the kits on the shelf, they both look great. Just the Tamiya kit got there sooner with less effort.
