One thing that I have seen which is quite effective is to pose the model by a hangar door. You don't need to make the entire hangar, just the end. Another thing to try would be maybe a scene out on the airfield, with a little tarmac, the edge in grass and a couple of vehicles, like you say. You can throw in a low brick building in the background for a bit of depth and interest. Airfields often have these right by the ramp.
