Not participating in the group build I missed this, so thanks for posting in this forum!
Wonderful job on the entire build, especially the finish. I'm currently working on the Trumpeter 48th scale F-100C, also in the SEA scheme, and if mine even remotely comes out as nice as yours I'll be extremely pleased!

According to Carl Molesworth in his Osprey book, "23rd Fighter Group, 'Chennault's Sharks'," the plane number is 169.
I am unaware of any decals of this P-40.

Some of you are aware that Eli Raphael of Zotz Decals has released a decal sheet for 1/32nd scale P-40F/L's, the Merlin powered variant of the Warhawk. I have the sheet, and it's a beauty! The only problem is that there has been no 32nd scale model of this variant.....to date. However, in conjunction with the decals, Derek Bradshaw has been preparing a resin nose conversion for the Hasegawa kit. Anyone interested in this might want to check out this post on the Large Scale Planes forums, which has additional information along with some teaser photographs on the conversion's progress:

I know I'll be getting a couple of these conversions once released!

Mark
Just wanted to bump this topic up, since Derek has completed more work on the conversion and is getting closer to finishing it. Just follow the link above for the latest!

Very nice P-40L. I have an aeromaster nose that I will fit to the Mauve kit. Any pointers on cuttting and replacing the nose?
Thanks, Rex
The instructions say to use a razor saw to cut the front of the kit fuselage away. I figured this would be a sure-fire way to really mess things up. Instead, I used an Xacto knife with a new blade (#11, I believe) and ran it along the area to be cut, gradually making each pass deeper and deeper. This was slower than a razor saw but gave me a lot more control. Fortunately, unlike with the AMtech resin nose, the cuts fall along panel lines so you have a nice guide to go by. This worked well for me. Other than that, the installation is pretty straightforward. Good luck with yours!
Thanks everyone for the nice compliments; much appreciated!

Hi folks,
Just wrapped up my first build on 2010 . I took the unusual step (for me) of actually documenting this build as it progressed, so got a handle on how long it took me to finish it: five months. If I learned anything from it, it's that I build slowly. But I think I already knew this. Probably explains why I haven't posted much here...
Anyway, this is the Eduard kit (48th scale) and Aeromaster resin nose, with most of the resin and photoetch bells & whistles from the kit that I didn't manage to mangle or that didn't fly off into Never-Never Land. Eduard apparently felt that the resin and photoetch wasn't enough work for me, so conveniently neglected other items, such as canopy rails, or better yet got others wrong, such as the oleo scissors, causing me to fumble my way through scratch-building them. The only thing really missing is the reflector gun sight, simply because the kit one is the wrong type and I've been too lazy to look for an aftermarket one yet.
This is "Duchess of Durham" while assigned to then Captain Bruce Hunt of the 314th FS/324th FG in Italy '43. "Duchess" was originally flown by ace "Zack" Taylor of the 325th FG, the famed Checkertails, which dumped its P-40s on the 324th when it transitioned to the Jug. The 324th figured it would probably be a good idea to paint over the yellow and black checkertails so as to no longer be confused with the 325th, hence the OD on the tail section. Same logic for the OD covering the original numbers on the fuselage.
The main reason I decided on this specific airplane is because for the past year or so I've had the privilege of corresponding with Col. Hunt via email and snail mail, and he is one of the nicest, humblest, and most generous people out there. So, without further ado (and boring anyone further who's still reading this), my feeble attempt at honoring a true gentleman and hero:
Thanks for looking, and as always any comments and constructive criticism welcome!
Regards,
Mark

Lulu Belle #2 would be great if I could find out the serial, the two digit tail number, and the crew chief's name!
J
Still looking for the information for #2, but if #1 is of any interest here's what you need:

By the way, the original "Lulu Belle" was a P-40N-1, I believe. If you can get beyond the white-wall tires, it would make one sweet build!

Great pics of the skulls, but no pics of the whole airplane, unfortunately (all too common). Not doable unless we can find pics of at least one side of the entire airplane. I'd kill to do "Lulu Belle". If anybody knows of other pics of these guys...

J,
Most P-40Ns left the factory with the smaller tires and wheels--an effort to lighten the airframe (although some were outfitted with the larger in the field). The "not for use" likely applies for the specific markings included in the current Hasegawa release, but would be relevant for a later release (or aftermarket decals).
HTH,

Nice build, Scott! I like the job you did on the weathering. Are those the Superscale decals?

Very nice work on the Hun! I agree with C. Alan, the tail area looks great.
I recently picked up this kit, not wanting to pay the cost of Trumpeter's 32nd scale F-100D or rescribe the old Monogram kit. I want to do one in SEA scheme (no BMF for me!), and one thing that sold me on the kit are the markings for the New Mexico ANG. My father was stationed at Kirtland AFB in the early-mid 70's and I have fond memories of living there.
Any special tips on the build this kit? I want to keep mine simple so will probably go OOB. The only real review I've seen of the kit is Michael Benolkin's over on Cybermodler, and he gives it pretty good marks.
Can't wait to see yours all finished!

Nice job on the build! I too really like the Scorpion and hopefully will get around to building the one in my stash someday.

Gloria Lyons was No.4 Servicing Unit, RNZAF not 18...
and there 3 P-40's that carried that name -
P-40N-1, NZ3148 written off due to a crash landing on February 9th, 1944
P-40N-5, NZ3167 written off (two weeks later) after being hit by enemy ground fire while on a strafing mission to northern Bougainville on May 17th, 1944
P-40N-20, NZ3220 and now is privately owned and stored at Mapua (near Nelson), New Zealand.
there also was a F4U-1A (NZ5233) that carried Gloria Lyons too, written off after a landing accident at Torokina on June 15th, 1944.
Ventura Publications does Gloria Lyons markings in 32nd... See here, Clicky Clickly!
My apologies for the incorrect information...that came about in my rush to get my decal requests in! Thanks also for the information on Ventura Publications....looks like another set I'll be ordering!

Okay, I was thinking of decals rarely (if at all ) done in all scales. Here are some others just for 32nd:
25th FS/51st FG (sabre tooth nose art)
Joel Paris/49th FG
Andy Reynolds/49th FG
18th FS/343rd FG (Aleutians, the one with Pluto marking the Rising Sun)
Billy Drake/112 Sqn
18 Sqn RNZAF (Gloria Lyons)
80th FG (skull)..perhaps the one zerosystem is referring to

Boy, where do I start?!
Here's just a partial list:
E/Kittyhawk Mk. I: No. 450 squadron RAAF (Boxing Kangaroo)--done correctly
Jim Morehead's #51 (L' Ace), 49th FG
Sammy Pierce's #42 (Kay the Strawberry Blonde), 49th FG
K/Kittyhawk Mk. III: Lyndon Marshall's 'White 256', 51st FG
Johnson 'Jay' Overcash's #13, 57th FG--done correctly
N/Kittyhawk Mk.IV: Sammy Pierce's #55 (another Kay the Strawberry Blonde)
Emmett Davis ("Cyclone"), 8th FG
All these have photographic evidence of some sort, although few have total airframe shots. If any are of interest I'd be happy to provide you with more specifics.
I'm sure I'll think of more...just give me time!

Tell Giovanni that his build looks great! My father flew the WC-135B--the weather recon version--and I hope to one day to a model of one.

Very nice build, and a superb job on the finish and weathering! I have the "K" and "N" in my stash and have concerns about the fit in the areas you mention....I've heard from others as well that it's not quite as good as with their 48th scale cousins.

I agree with J.C. I have the book and, although it's not inexpensive, it's a must-have for anyone interested in the 312th. It's loaded with photographs and outstanding artwork, including color profiles, by Jack Fellows. And there is coverage of the B-32 (one of the reasons I bought the book). However, I couldn't find any photos of the B-32s with the shamrock on the tail...although there is at least one in the book from Schiffer, "Consolidated B-32 Dominator. The Ultimate Look: from Drawing Board to Scrapyard," (THE book on the B-32).
I too am eagerly awaiting Lawrence Hickey's book on the 38th BG, although it's been promised for a loooong time and yet to see the light of day.

I feel your pain, Todd, because I too have had gloss-coated decals unintentionally lifted by tape. I try to simply shield the decals with a paper mask or Post-It notes when confronted with a similar problem.
It's especially bad in your case because that's such a nice looking B-25! I have loads of B-25 decals but unfortunately not "Hell's Fire," otherwise I'd be happy to send them to you. I'm sure someone out there has them, so my recommendation is to just keep posting your request on different forums.

Unfortunately I don't have a photograph of 'Veronica,' although I have seen a photograph of a 79th FG P-40 from late summer '43 in which the yellow ring is definitely visible on the fuselage star, and another from early '44 in which the 'stars and bars' is visible on the wing. On this latter photograph it appears the star on the fuselage has the yellow ring but it's difficult to tell with certainty.
So it appears that AMtech's markings are entirely plausible, although I agree a nice photograph of 'Veronica' would be most useful!
Good luck in your search, and I'd be interested in any information you find out.

Great work so far, Andy! I can't wait to see it with a layer of paint on.

Mark,
You've probably seen this article on the P-40 Warhawk website, but if not here's the link:
http://www.p40warhawk.com/Models/Builds/To...P-40L/P-40L.htm
There's an email address for his son, Tom, at the bottom. Perhaps he can provide you with additional information, if you haven't tried contacting him yet.
HTH,

I agree. It's one very well built model with outstanding weathering!

Presley's F-100C
in Today's Birds
Posted
Here's a link to the ARC home page. Just scroll down until you see the photo of Michael Presley's F-100C for Thursday's update and click on the photo:
http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/
(There's probably an easier way to find the article but I'm fairly computer illiterate)
And, yes, Michael did an outstanding job on the build and even better one on the article! I'm in the process of building the kit in the same markings and really appreciate all the useful information that answered many of the questions I had of this aircraft (especially on the afterburner can, which Trumpeter screwed up on). Now I need to make those "Miss Mynookie" decals!
