Hello, folks! I already got an answer on the IPMS Stockholm Forum: IPMS Stockholm -- Draken roundel answer With Stan Sundelin's info and the statement that Tuve just made above, it seems decided that there is no need for a black outline. BTW, the roundels are indeed decals, thus indeed grime can accumulate near their edge. Well, I am happily awaitng Zotz' decal, as I really like the variants with the coloured fins. Hopefully, it'll take just a few more days until I can start bashing that kit: Oh -- no separate XY (insert favourite detail), oh -- this tidbit or that tidbit. DUH! Where i

Hi! Could you please help with a question, that popped up in anotther thread here: (Link: http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/inde.....&p=1346439) Did the Swedish Air Froce Draken's Tre Kroner roundels have a thin black outline around the yellow circle or not? Depending on the individual picture, sometimes the outline seems to be there, sometimes not. Maybe it's just accmulated grime. It would be great to have a well-informed answer. Regards Jan

Greetings, everybody, yes, Jan Jorgensen's Draken book is a really good source, but even so the question is hard to answer definitely. For example, on p. 6 in the aforementioned book you can see the underside of a green/blue Draken, the underwing roundels show no circular outline. OTOH, a NFM Draken on p.13 shows a brownish-grey outline around it's right-side roundel and on p.14 the green Draken "Johan Röd" (with the white ghost on a red fin) seems to have a fine black line around the Tre Kroner. Is tihs particular aircraft one of your decal-options, Paolo? The pictures Thomas linked sup

New and Improved IPS and new Debris Deflectors
PeepingBear replied to Floyd S. Werner, Jr.'s topic in Helicopter Modeling
Do I understand you correctly, Floyd, these little gems will be available from Cobra Company in the near future? Regards Jan -
Ave! After reading Thomas' comment about the erroneous decals, I visited airliners.net looking for black borders around the "tre korner" roundel and I must say that I coldn't find any proof for a black outline, maybe it's just an illusion due to the contrast between the yellow and the outer camouflage colour. Even in the Aerofax minigraph, the pictures show black outlines around the crowns, but not around the whole roundel. Concerning the shades of blue (in the roundel) and green (inlet warnings), maybe we should wait for the real decal and not judge a picture that was clearly taken in a v

How is the Squadron WA book on the "F-100 Super Sabre"?
PeepingBear replied to PeepingBear's topic in Jet Modeling
Thanks for your answers! I think, I'll buy that WA book as well. Horrido! Jan -
Title says it: I'd like a short review of this book. I have the old D&S book on the Super Sabre, the question is: Is the recent WA-title worth buying, in other words: Does it offer lots of good detail pictures? TIA Jan

Hi Jon, that's one good looking Slick! BTW, could you tell us about the XM-23 gun systems? Is there any aftermarket -resin for them or did you scratchbuild the gun mounts? I really must say that its great to give such a retirement present to a veteran. They've earned our respect and they really value such a model. Horrido! Jan

A really interesting upgrade kit! I'll definitely buy one or two. For anybody out there who doesn't need some of the parts: Why don't you team up with others and utilize the kit to the max! Asking Danny to sell this or that partial variant of this kit, well, IMHO, that would be an invitation for a logistical / economical desaster. Hasegawa's F-104 is a nice kit, but not perfect. DaCo's upgrade offers the potential to enhance the kit, that is all there is to say. Compare it to CMK's "big" resin upgrade and then try to find fault in Daco's planned set. "I want my chocolate sauce on an extr

Hi Jake, yesterday my copy of "The modern hog guide" arrived. Well, I must say, I am disappointed! I have searched for a guide on how to be a real hog for a long time, and I only got this: Lots of perfectly sharp and well lighted colour pictures of an aircraft, all nooks and crannies one could think about. But no real how-to hints for us Hog-Wannabees... Should there be anybody with the strange desire to build an A-10 model, this is the perfect book to get. But still nothing about the complicated task of behaving like a true hog... Thanks for your great work! If you publish a similar boo

Hi Mike, do you know this website? 916 Starfighter There is a gallery with BIG pictures, you'll enjoy it. HTH Jan

The underside of Bundesluftwaffe and MarFlg Starfighters was painted in RAL 9006 "Weissaluminium", but that color weathered really quick. You might consider using light grey (approx. FS 36375 ~ RAL 7001 "Silbergrau") with a tad of metallic sheen mixed in, unless you want to depict a arsenal-fresh aircraft. Later, for the Tornado and the Lynx (helo) , the Marineflieger changed the underside paint to RAL 7035 "Lichtgrau", approx. FS 35630. A good research base is Don Color's website (links directly to the MarFlg F-104 Norm 76 scheme). The landing gear bays of the F-104Gs that I've seen over

Is the F-15C MSIP Update correct for Desert Storm ?
PeepingBear replied to jaydar's topic in Jet Modeling
Yes, Black Box' F-15 pit was/is a MSIP variant. HTH Jan -
Raceaddict's Blackhawk picture clearly shows another important fact: Contrary to Italeri's drooping blades (e.g. Italeri's H-34 looks like it has an umbrella on top), the more intensely curved part of a rotor blade is close to the rotor head, not near the tip. The outer part of the blade is almost straight. Go slowly, mainly bend the inner third next to the blade root, give the tip area only a "hint of droop", compare all blades for similar degree of curvature, enjoy -- you're done.

There is / was a desktop-model for promotional use. It's of italian origin (AFAIK), a tad expensive and it appears on eBay from time to time. You'll have to search for it on the web (read this: dig deeper), but I'm sure you'll find it. But if the NH-90 seriously enters service ("front-line", so to say), I'm sure, we'll get a 48 scale kit from a mainstream manufacturer. HTH Jan

Hi! the Ecureuil kit from Heller in 1/50 (or 1/48) was first issued in the late 80es. It should be of acceptable quality, if you're not to used to Hasegawa's / Tamiya's standards. Alas, it's OOP, so you better keep an eye peeled for that kit when visiting dark and dusty model stores. Examples of built Ecureuils (not by me) and a sneak peek into the box (log in to sse the pics): FlugzeugForum FlugzeugForum FlugzeugForum BTW, Heller also made a "legacy" Puma in that scale. HTH Jan

Hi SebastianP, why don't you seek some lead foil (or plate), it's used by roofers (rooflayers?) and usually they give scrap parts away for free. Lead is ductile and has a high density, so you should be able to put sufficient weight even into cramped spaces. Good luck with your Helicopter projects. Jan from Germany

German NH-90 CSAR - What kind of armament?
PeepingBear replied to Hajo L.'s topic in Helicopter Modeling
Moritz is correct with the choice of weapons. AFAIK, it's planned to mount the MGs in the aft cabin windows (above the sponsons). Until today the German C-SAR concept is just that, a concept. Since we are such a peaceful nation, many of our wise leaders think Germany doesn't need it's own C-SAR unit. In the unexpected case that we DO need C-SAR, we will ask our allies to shoulder the dangerous task. (Sorry, couldn't resist) There is a picture of a fuselage with a door-mounted MG http://www.mil.fi/maavoimat/kalustoesittely/popup.dsp?id=507, but its better to keep the (relatively small) doors -
That antenna had a clear rounded tip, I'd use a clear PS rod, saw and sand it to shape. The clear tip seems to be about 4 to 5 in long, about 2 mm in 1/48 scale. Check: http://tanks45.tripod.com/Jets45/Histories/Wyvern/Wyvern.htm for a smaller picture with that antenna. On this Thai webseite (http://www.wing21.rtaf.mi.th/wboard/question.asp?GID=4875) you can find a colour pic with the antenna, showing the clear tip. HTH Jan

Revell re-released their 48th CH-53G
PeepingBear replied to ChernayaAkula's topic in Helicopter Modeling
Horrido! In normal German climate IPS aren't really needed because there isn't enogh dust / sand flying around. In Afghanistan our CH-53 fly with IPS, at least sometimes IIRC. The IPS look similar to the ones included in Revell's kit. HTH Jan -
That's one cool conversion! Could you please tell us how you made the flexible ammo chutes? Cheers from Germany! Jan

What's up with the jet nozzles on the German TF-104G?
PeepingBear replied to One-Oh-Four's topic in Jet Modeling
Yes, Dave is right, in the 70es "our" Starfighters got a modernized J79 engine, it was more reliable and economical, had 200kp more thrust, but -alas- lost the characteristic banshee-like sound. On a bare-metal F-104, or one with the older letter + numeral identification code (e.g. DF+234) you could surely find the older, original nozzle. Changeover to the newer ID-system (numerals only, e.g. 20+50) was around 1970, thus aircraft with these IDs will probably have the modified exhaust. The RF-104s were phased out in the early 70es, so it makes sense t oshow them with the old nozzle. Y -
How to order Renaissance (FabFlight) from outside of France?
PeepingBear replied to PeepingBear's topic in Jet Modeling
Thanks for all your answers. Now that Kit discount offers the Mirage sets, I'll buy from them, 'cause that webstore is quite good. The German distributors are offering car-models only. Ordering directly from Renaissance might be a good idea as well. Cheers, Jan
