  1. Chuck, Glad to see that I'm not the only one who needs to rub out even Alcad finishes. I use 6,000 for Alcads, but for paints I've found that Tamiya 3,000 sponges work extremely well especially on curved surfaces. I've been at air brushing a long time, and I always need to rub out the paint surface for a truly smooth finish. I've gotten to the point on my race car models using Matt Lacquers (Gravity paints), the surface is smooth enough for decaling without a clear gloss coat. I've never attempted that with an aircraft build as yet, but Paul Budzik does it all the time
  2. Ben, Don't feel bad I did the same exact thing with all the mods to make the body correct for the Martini entry. All I can say is measure twice and drill once, and go real slow. Let the bit do all the work otherwise you'll chip the paint at the lip. The Dzus fasteners came with the Ebbro kit in a little tiny package. Joel
  3. Chuck Excellent engineering on the rear wheel assembly, as well on the opening phases of detailing the main landing gear. Joel
  4. Ben, Looking forward to seeing how you progress through the build. As for the seatbelt name labels, I still have to add them to the Type 72E and the cowling Dzus which are self stick colored PE. Now talk about lazy. Joel
  5. Ben, I used the Tamiya 1970s belts. You have to be somewhat creative as they're generic, but the PE fits correctly, and glues with CCA just fine. Joel
  6. Ben, From what I heard over the years, I'm going to need all the luck I can get. Joel
  7. Ben, The 917K looks great!!. I also had issues with those side windows fitting. I sanded and filed little by little till the fit. How's the fit of the body to the chassis especially in the back end? I also had some issues back there. Joel
  8. Capt. Obvious, Sure seems that way for now. I'm sure that once I settle in I'll be back to building aircraft as well. Right now all these race cars I actually have some connection to. I'm sure that Henry Ford II is turning over in his grave watching me build the Ferrari 330 P415 before I build the GT40 MkII 1966 LeMans winner, or the GT40 which won LeMans in 1968. I do have both Fujimi cars in my small but growing stash. Glad that you like how the interior is coming out. The seats do have that worn look to them, which is what I was going for. Joel
  9. Ben, I'm going to bite the bullet and try to get one of the Heller kits. As long as Michael at IndyCals decals work for them as well, I'm set. Of course I've heard that the Heller kits are rather hard to build Joel
  10. Ben, Heller makes a 917K? I've never seen it. Just might be something that I'd be interested in. Joel
  11. Ben, I've tried those tire decals and they're horrific. they never would stick for me. I used IndyCal decals and they came out perfect. I do lay down a very heavy coat of clear gloss lacquer, then rub it out prior to decaling. I've bought two sets of the Goodyears, two sheets of the Firestones, a sheet of the Blue stripe Goodyears, and one sheet of the yellow Firestone stripes. There's enough decals on each sheet to do 8 tires on one side, or 4 tires on both sides. I've also already used Michael's goof replacement decal on my Porsche 917. Works great, and was a life saver for sure.
  12. Chuck, Your Gloss black priming is simply amazing. I've been using Tamiya Acrylic Gloss Black thinned 2:3 with Yellow cap but it's no where near the smoothness you've achieved. I'm assuming that you decanted the lacquer from a Rattle can. I'm thinking that maybe Mr. Color (Lacquer) Gloss Black would be a better option for me after I finish the 3 bottles of the Tamiya gloss I still have on the shelf. Those stress marks are certainly a pain to deal with. I found them on several of the panel surfaces on my Lotus Type 72E build, and no matter how much I primed, I just couldn'
  13. Janne, thanks so much for checking out my type 72E. It means a great deal to me that we still follow each others work. As for Ronnie Peterson, I was a fan. Just too many F1 & Indy car drivers died in firery accidents back then. Peterson and Andretti were the class of the field. And at times I honestly thought that he was faster then Andretti. Joel
  14. Janne, You finally found me. Yep, I'm finally building what I've loved since I was 16 years old. My plan once I get my past the basics, is two cars then one special aircraft build. Joel
  15. Ben, Those intakes scare me plenty as they always have the stripe going into it. No decal unless you cut it perfectly ever works out. So I end up not using any of the decal, and have to paint it for the very reason you had, the colors just don't match. One thing that Michael at IndyCals does is match his decals to a specific brand of paint, so it should come really close. Joel
  16. Ben, At my age, I'm not so sure that you can call my mental facilities a "Great Mind". The Fujimi kit according to Michael at IndyCals is a 330 P415, which is a customer car. The issue for me is that in this case the customer is NART, and I've always considered them to be the Unofficial North American Racing Div of Ferrari. All my race car models have Indycal decals which are Laser printed, no longer Alps printed. For what Michael doesn't have, I use a few small silk screen decal companies in Hong Kong. I do the same for the correct color of paint, which
  17. Chuck, I've always been under the assumption that the clear parts, especially canopies are what you're referring to as hard plastic, since they always seem to be the most brittle plastic in the kit. As for a more gradual polishing system, I like to use the Tamiya sponges: 1000, 1500, 2000, & 3000. Past that for my auto finishes, I use the Micro Mesh pads 4000, 6000, 8000 & finally 12000, and then the paste and wax. Joel
  18. Well, finally I have enough done for a 1sty update. Rather then starting with the bodywork & prep for painting, I decided to follow the instructions and start at the beginning @:), and so the cockpit was where I started the 330 build. Fujimi's did an excellent job designing the cockpit, so it looks complete, is fairly easy to construct, and doesn't have any build issues. With that being said, the chassis pan was primed with Tamiya Gloss Black, then followed with Alcad Flat Aluminum. The dash was just painted Tamiya Flat Black. The two seats which are molded a
  19. Ben, Now that's impressive to say the least. The body looks fantastic. Did you paint the nose or use the kit decals? And if so how did you manage to get them into the radiator intakes? Joel
  20. Chuck, that's certainly very interesting. Will have to look into it. Joel
  21. Chuck, Welcome back. Pete and I were getting concerned as it's been a really long break. I use a similar polishing system by Gravity paints, as well as a final coat of Tamiya Wax. Have you tried waxing your canopies as the final step? Joel
  22. Zaxos, No need to thank me. your work is that good. Joel
  23. the decaling is absolutely perfect. Super impressive. And every picture of the pit shows more and more details. Just can't get much better then this. Joel
  24. Slartibartfast, Thank you so much for your most positive words, they're greatly appreciated. Joel
  25. Ben, looking forward to your next car build for sure. For me, aircraft modeling will be that alternate break every so often. But right now it's livin' at the track. Joel
