  1. I started building back in the latter half of the 1970s when I was but a mere lad. Even now, just thinking back to the kits I used to crave and build gets my heart thumping with excitement today. I still have the childlike eagerness when it comes to building kits! There was a time several years ago where I found myself in your shoes. I decided to dabble in aftermarket resin cockpits and photoetched detail sets. I quickly learned that they were far more trouble than they were worth and thereby contradictory to my "I build for the fun of it" joy. One day, I found myself in a mod
  2. Thanks to all for the great advice! It pretty much verifies what I was suspecting. Earlier in the year, I ordered about 7-8 different colors of the AK Interactive line of acrylic lacquers (or is it "lacquer acrylics"?). I am VERY happy with how those turned out. In my current situation, however, I really only needed this one color (FS 36440 Light Gull Grey) and, while I am very happy with AK, I didn't feel like placing an internet order for a single color and pay a shipping charge on top of that. That's why I went to my local hobby shop where they only have Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics.
  3. Hi guys. Since my old "go to" of paint brands (Model Master) is practically gone from the store shelves, I'm starting to branch out into other brands. Upon the recommendation of my local hobby shop, I am going to try painting my F-14 using Vallejo Air acrylics. For those who have used this brand, what are your thoughts on it? How well does it hold up to masking? Even though Vallejo Air is supposed to be airbrush-ready straight from the container, would it be of any benefit if I use a few drops of their proprietary flow improver along with it? Thanks for your advice!
  4. I can't recommend them highly enough. My favorite manufacturer is Monogram and Mustang Hobbies had a great selection of them, especially of the original or at least the early releases. I find those to be the most crisp moldings. It's been a couple of years (?) since I've ordered from them. Shipping was $10 and was a fairly flat rate. Then again, I only ever ordered one kit at a time. Delivery was quick. Communication was excellent. I'd totally order from Mustang Hobbies again. Eric
  5. I'm kind of surprised by that. Even in Green Bay, Sheboygan or Fon du Lac there are no rooms available?
  6. Been there. Done that. Bought the T-shirt. I never tipped a bottle of liquid cement over, but I have forgotten to put the cap back on a brand new bottle of Tenax. When I went to my work bench the following day, that's when I discovered that literally half the glue had evaporated. I don't know that I can speak in an educated way about the toxicity of the soaked paper towels, but I can only imagine that you really don't have a lot to worry about. I think most of it will evaporate in pretty short order. (On a side note, if you ever spill some liquid glue on a model, don't try t
  7. Ha-ha-ha! A good observation. While I don't really drink beer much, I have this habit of having a Cherry Pepsi with me to drink while I'm working on a kit. Whenever I'd visit my dad, I'd always help him out on some neat woodworking project of his in his big hobby barn that he converted into a workshop. The smell of the saw dust. The great memories with my dad. Whenever we'd go out to his shop, he'd always hand me a Cherry Pepsi. For me, having one on hand as I'm about to sit down at my hobby bench connects me to the great times I had with my dad in his workshop. My dad is still alive a
  8. I'd like to see more American X-planes from WW2. Lord knows we are inundated with kits of German planes that never made it off the drawing board. Why can't we have some 1/48 scale injection molded kits of the McDonnell XP-67 Moonbat, the Lockheed L-133, the Northrop XP-79 or the Douglas XB-42 Mixmaster?
  9. I'll bet she'll love it! Every year that I've gone, it's always been unbelievably sunny. Tell her to slather on the sun screen, bring a big hat and be sure to stay hydrated! I just hope it doesn't get cancelled at the last moment. It was with disbelief when I heard a few days ago about an upcoming airshow in the Milwaukee area that was just cancelled "due to several factors". Not 100% sure what those factors are, but I am hoping the same fate does not befall the EAA airshow this year.
  10. Green Bay here (about 45 minutes north of Oshkosh). Yup! I'll be there along with my daughter who wants to go for the very first time. Kids 18 and under get in for free!
  11. That's mighty darned nice of you to suggest that, Curt! Thanks! I will see if I can post some pictures either tonight or tomorrow. I was really excited about this plane on a multitude of levels. For starters, I build almost all American planes simply because I love the nose art options. I haven't built a Spitfire since I did the wonderful Snap-Tite kit back in the mid-'70s when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I want to expand my horizons and I've always enjoyed the lines of the Spitfire. Secondly, I've always loved the Revell and Monogram kits from the days of my youth. How co
  12. Thanks Curt! I'll try to post some pictures when I'm done. The other night while working at my hobby bench, I discovered that the front windscreen is going to be a problem. It doesn't exactly fit flush with the fuselage so I'm in the midst of doing some sanding and fitting. That can be fixed. The big problem is that the front windscreen flares out wider than the opening and I really don't know how I'm going to deal with that. The rest of the kit has been absolutely fantastic. It's just the front windscreen that's taken the wind out of my sails. I might just decide to center it as best
  13. I hear ya. I know there's been much discussion as to what color (or mixture of colors) is the most accurate. Thanks for the info! Eric
  14. I have Tamiya XF-21 "Sky" acrylic paint. Is that the right color for his Spitfire's underside or should I be looking for something else?
  15. Thank you Seawinder. Yeah, I checked online and I found a ton of profiles, but I never trust those things since I've seen too many with too many mistakes/wrong information. Then I found a few groups where the topic was discussed, but they would often go on such wild tangents that I just couldn't make heads or tails as to what the final answer was. On a gamble, I picked up some Tamiya "Sky" paint last week. It looks like I'm all set! Thanks again, Eric
  16. Hi guys. I'm working on the 1/48 Revellogram Spitfire Mk2 and I wanted to do it up in the markings of Douglas Bader's plane. I know pretty much nothing about British color schemes in WW2. The instructions call out a light grey on the underside, but I can't help but feel this isn't correct. Or maybe it is? I'm not sure. Is it supposed to be light grey, "sky", or some other color? Thanks! Eric
  17. Hands down, go with the Monogram kit. Great fit. Builds up nice. More accurate in shape. Isn't overly engineered nor overly priced.
  18. I don't get it. Could someone please tell me what's going on? Is this a skit? A real thing?
  19. I already found one mistake. There's no 1/48 decal sheet for the F-89. Ha! Nailed it. I'll let you know which current sheet I'd like to recieve. Thanks! Eric
  20. Hi guys! I'd say a good 99.99% of my builds are aircraft kits. Now I'm building the Revell Titanic for my 13 year old daughter. It's the venerable 1/570 scale kit. So here's my question: What would be the best way to paint the deck tan horizontal surfaces such as the deck in relation to the white vertical surfaces such as the walls of the ship? Do you airbrush one color, do some serious masking, then airbrush the other color? The decks and structures are all molded as one as opposed to being separate entities. As you can tell, I am definitely not a ship builder! I need help
  21. Spooky, is there something in particular you're looking for? Are you talking about kits? Old kits? New kits? Tools? Decals? A little bit of everything?
  22. I think this is an EXCELLENT post! I've seen so many articles both in magazines and online where someone shows their cockpit all glued up but not a single bit of paint on it. Next thing you know, they're showing a picture of the cockpit completely painted. They never EVER state how they went from one stage to the next. I look at it and I can't help but think "How did they paint all the minute details after everything was already assembled?" The person never states if they're just showing the unpainted cockpit sort of held together by friction and then they take it all apart, paint it, the
  23. It's amazing to believe that such a placid and beautiful the area today was the scene of a terrifying battle 80 years ago.
  24. Very much agree! I felt it was subtly done rather than overdone which seems to be the prevalent trend these days. http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Gal16/15901-16000/gal15964-B-25-Ordovini/00.shtm Eric
  25. If Revell could come out with one similar in quality to their 1/48 F-86D, then that would be the best. It would be something better than Tamiya quality at something far less than Tamiya price. Eric
