I've built a number of Testors/Italeri 1/48 Hornet kits. They can work for a budget build, if you don't mind all the faults and inaccuracies. If your detail obsessed, forget it. Take a look at the first A-7 pic on this page for a VA-15 A-7E. You can clearly see a slightly lighter color grey on the fuselage under the wing. This is the scheme worn while VA-15 was assigned to CVW-6. In late 1985, the squadron was assigned to Marine Air Group 12 and were repainted as can be see here. The main problem is that there doesn't seem to a be a lot of photos that clearly show the areas underneath the wings that distinctively show whether or not the aircraft are in actuality two-tone. The newer boxings (1995 and newer) have the LEX fences, but no cleats for the tails. The also have the prototype intake stations, and not the the production ones. Weapons are only 2 sidewinders and 4 Mk83s with a centerline tank. The nose also needs work as the molds have become dated Also, you really have to pay attention the Hobby Boss kits if you want to make correct hornets. The A kits have tails for the early block hornets only, which to my knowledge only the US and Canada flew before they were upgraded after a year or so. Probably a long shot, but does anyone have a leftover centerline tank from the Revell-Monogram F-18C kit? I need one for a build repair and can't use any of my spare Hasegawa/Hobby Boss tanks for this.

Looking for someone willing to trade Part G3 of the Hobby Boss F/A-18A kit. I can trade Part H3 of the Hobby Boss F/A-18C kit, which is more appropriate for the A kit. Strangely, the Hobby Boss F/A-18C comes with the starboard nose gear door for an A or D model Hornet, while the A kit comes with a door more appropriate for a C kit (Has the C appropriate antenna molded on the door).

I don't know of any current 1/48 aftermarket, but the older (1995, 1998, and 2002 boxings) Revell-Monogram F-18C kit came with low-viz VFA-113 markings from Desert Shield/Storm. Not the best decals, but they do the job. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Fightertown Decals just announced a sheet that includes a VFA-113 low-viz jet.

Been seeing a lot of the old Monogram A-7 kits selling on ebay lately. I recently built one for a show last year and other than the wing join and canopy, it goes together ok. One of those looks like a duck, must be a duck kits. Definitely not a kit for rivet counters. My biggest gripes on it were the wing join not being a snug fit, TERs molded to the outer pylons, arresting hook molded to the fuselage, no HUD, and the upper main gear doors being a single door instead of two piece doors. The ordance is a joke. Hope they update the AIM-9s because I don't know what the those kit missiles are,

The only Hasegawa kits so far that I know of that has both the A/B tails (E sprue) and C/D tails (F sprue) are the F/A-18A/C PT50 kit, and the 2 most recent Blue Angels kits (Blue Angels 2010 and B/D Blue Angels). I'd give you the A-tails from my PT50 kit if I wasn't turning that into an A model. I got a request from a client to build an RF-4C for him the other day (He worked on them 'way back in the day'), but I'm running into difficulty sourcing a kit. All I can seem to find in 1/48 are RF-4B Hasegawa kits. I've seen on occasion the old Testors RF-4B and RF-4C kits, but I've heard that the kit is not that good in terms of shape or fit. Other than that, I don't know of any 1/48 RF-4C kits out there that are readily available and won't cost me an arm and a leg since this would be a limited budget project. Not sure how detailed you want to get on it, but here's what I did to convert a Hasegawa C to A (D to B will be the same steps) - Source new tails. I was able to trade someone my C tails for the appropriate A tails. If you can't get any A tails, the D tails can be used if you remove the middle antenna housing above the rudder, but it won't be exactly right. Again, not sure how detailed you want to get on this. I took a friend of mine to a show recently where she saw some finished egg planes and thought they looked cute. So much so, I thought I would build a couple customized ones for her. Sorry about the bad pics, just taken with a camera phone. The first is a Strawberry Shortcake-themed T-4. Decals are fingernail decals sealed over with a gloss coat. Unfortunately, the pitot tube broke off and lost to the carpet monster. <Photos deleted> The second egg plane is a F-14 turned into a Christmas tree ornament. <Photos deleted>

For modeling purposes, the difference is mostly in the antennae configuration and the pods atop the vertical stabs. 15J/DJ's vertical stabs both have the small skinny pods, while the port vertical stab has the much thicker pod on USAF 15C/D's. The A sprue included in the 7205 kit has antennas that are specific JASDF Eagles, so won't need those for a USAF C Eagle. I believe the 7205 kit comes with AAM-3 missiles, so you'll need to replace these with AIM-9s for a USAF C version, but the kit still includes AIM-7s, so you'll be able to use those if fitting it with Sparrows.

I have the Heller USCG C-130 kit. Someone had told me it was the Airfix kit reboxed, but the parts are all stamped Italeri. I haven't had a chance to look at the sprues for the newer Italeri release, but I'm guessing it's their standard C-130E/H kit with USCG decals, which would make the kits the same plastic.

Wasn't referring to the Doctor Cranky tip, but it's good to know about that stuff for future reference. Now I don't have to waste decal paper and effort trying to resize Hello Kitty and Strawberry Shortcake images to fit on an egg plane. The things I do for the ones I love..
