  1. I've seen it in reverse, a modeller decorated his wife's fingernails with lozenge decals and they fixed for a week or so. So it might be the same decal paper.

But, what nail design would you possibly want to have on your model? :blink:/>

Egg plane for girlfriend.. need I say more?

  2. Kinda of a strange question, but I've seen fingernail waterslide decals for awhile and was wondering if anyone has ever applied them to a model or if they would even work. According to instructions on some of them, application is the same as any other waterslide decal - clean area, dip in water, apply, seal.

    Any thoughts?

  3. Thank you for answering.

I will build this bird in a flying position so i don't have to think about the shock absorber.

As for chaff/flare dispensers maybe i can use the photo etched dispensers

from the academy strike eagle. One quarter could fit? Can sombody explain why the canadian airforce doesn't use

the double chaff/flare dispensers? (Like swiss and finland hornets)

The next hornet will be a swiss hornet from hasegawa with the M Sprue which has all the parts to build a

    late type hornet.

Dual Chaff Buckets were introduced with F/A-18 C/D block Lot 18 aircraft. All USN/USMC Hornets with BuNos 165171 and higher, and all Foreign C/D aircraft have them. As a result, none of the US, Canadian, Spanish or Aussie A,A+,or B models have them.

I don't know if the Academy set will work, as the A model hornet used the AN/ALE-39 dispenser, while the F-15 started with the AN/ALE-40 and ALE-45. The dispensers may look a bit different, but it's your model, so it's really up to you how you want it look. If all else fails, you can always try scratch building one with a thin piece of sheet or strip styrene and poking some holes with a needle.

  4. Doing this project myself, (2008 Demo Bird) but my plane didn't have the bird slicer IFF antenna yet. I'm assuming you are doing a standard line bird.

    - Chaff/Flare dispensers should be single bucket dispensers. Not sure how you plan on adding these, but I am using extra C/F dispenser decals from a MAW decals sheet which has these. You can see if someone didn't use the photo-etched ones that come with the Hasegawa Hornets that they'd be willing to give.

    - Remember to leave off the antenna bumps behind the cockpit, below the front windscreen and above the nose formation lights. Since the Hobby Boss kit has recessed lines where these parts go, you will need to fill in the lines and smooth it out.

    - You'll want to add stiffening plates to tails. You can scratch build these, but Flying Leatherneck models makes vinyl versions of the stiffeners that you can just peel and stick on to the vertical stabs and then paint over. I've used them on all my hornets and they work very well.

Sounds like everything else you've already identified or will come from the Wolfpack set.

  5. The cybermodeler review linked above is for the 2005 Italeri release. The Academy kit is a rebox of the 2013 kit, which is updated to represent a production growler, instead of the concept demonstrator that the 2005 release represented. Still not without it's flaws though.

  6. Are those Mk. 83s sharing the sprues w/ the Harpoons?

Those actually look more like AGM-84E SLAMs instead of Harpoons, which is inappropriate for an A model. Longer body and the front looks of the missile looks like it takes a clear piece. Hobby Boss seems to love the things. Have a stash of em from all the hobby boss hornet kits I had. I would much rather have the harpoons. Tired of cutting down my revell spares.

It would've been nice to see some snakeyes in addition to the slicks.

  7. Nice looking bug. Although I don't recall Aussie A's ever having the C-model antennaes behind the cockpit and on the nose.

I have a couple Hobby Boss kits in the stash. One thing I don't like about them is the lack of chaff/flare dispensers and that the A-boxing only has the early style tails.

  8. I remember that drive as a kid coming from Tacoma on my way up to Port Townsend to visit the grandparents. But back then, the carriers were older Essex class carriers.. and the Missouri was there as museum ship before being moved to Long Beach before being reactivated during the Reagan administration.. the good ole days.

Red flashed growlers? Well, seeing as all but one growler squadrons is based at NAS Whidbey Island.. I would imagine they were either VAQ-129 or VAQ-132, probably 129.. big red tail with sword and lightning bolt on the CAG bird.. pretty distinctive.

  9. Sounds like a plan. I know my 318th history is planned right now as 2 F-15s, (141 in 83 and an undetermined A model), 3 F-106's (141 in 1983, the 76 centennial bird, and a late 60's 057). I'd like to do an early 60's F-106 and a late 50's 102 but decals don't exist and I dont do well with custom designed decals, not to mention it takes me forever to get things built lately. Good luck with those.

  10. Another thing on the decals if you wanted to do something seldom seen. Repliscale did a F-15 set that included what the 318th birds looked like in their final year of operation - Small starburst in a tail stripe with TC letters on the tail. You can see it here. Too bad that happened.. I liked watching the big starburst fly over my house almost everyday.

  11. Couple of years ago hasegawa came out with a special boxing specific for ADTAC birds with the 318th CO bird on the box cover. Pretty much the same kit as the ASAT kit from 1986, but with 318th, 5th, and 49th FIS decals. I was lucky enough to grab this boxing on the cheap ($30), but it's pretty pricey when you find one, even for a hasegawa kit. But they are listed on ebay regularly.

As for making a B kit, I used the D/DJ kit and just swapped out the landing gear from an A kit that someone donated to me. I wasn't too concerned about the instrument panels since it was going to be a closed canopy job anyway. I haven't finished it yet unfortunately - it's been sitting on the back burner for almost 2 years now, but I will get back to it eventually.

Also, I don't know what you are going to be using as decals, but be carful if you are going to use the kit starburst decals. The film on my kit decals looks uneven and prone to cracking. I have backup sets from Experts Choice in case the kit decals crack and become unusable, but the color looks a bit on light side with these. I also have a microscale set that I've been looking to sell if you need a set.

  12. I have a number of 1/48 and 1/72 models that I need to move out. Priorities have shifted, and as much as I like to build models, I need to dramatically thin out the stash as I have no room or much time to devote to these kits. I will consider reasonable offers so just ask. Buyer pays actual shipping. Unfortunately, shipping is only to US/Canada at this time and payment will be via Paypal. Send PM with zip code for shipping quote.

  13. For your purposes, the F-14 LAU-7 is acceptable. You can't put a single AIM-9 rail on station 2 or 8. Well, it's pysically possible if you use the pylon adapter and single LAU-127 that the Super Hornets use on the outboard pylons, or the unique pylon that the Swiss use, but the SH setup isn't cleared on the baby Hornets and the Swiss pylon is unique to their jet (and possible the Finns).

The dual AIM-9 configuration is similar to the dual AIM-120 configuration on a pylon, except that one can use the LAU-7 in place of the LAU-127 although the LAU-127 is also capable of carrying/launching an AIM-9. I don't know if Australia uses the dual LAU-127 configuration.

Thanks. I've found some photos of the dual AIM-9 setup on RAAF hornets, but it's too difficult to tell if they are LAU-7s or LAU-127s. Since I already have enough extra 127's to cover the project, think I'll just use those.

    Thanks for the input.

  14. I've been asked by a friend to build him an RAAF F/A-18A, but he wants a specific load of 4 or 6 AIM-9s and 2 AIM-7s. The AIM-7s would go on Stations 3 and 7 with LAU-115s, and the AIM-9s on stations 1,2,8,9. He's not sure on the number of AIM-9s yet, But I'm in a bit of a bind on putting 1 or 2 AIM-9s on stations 2 and 8. I'm not completely sure how to do this.

My understanding is that for dual 'winders on 2 and 8, I would need a LAU-115 and then 2 LAU-7s to make this possible. I have spare LAU-115s from Wolfpack Designs, but I don't know where I can find appropriate 1/48 LAU-7s. I see that MAW Decals makes a LAU-7 for the Hasegawa F-14, but I don't know if these will work. Anyone know?

If mounting a single AIM-9 on 2 and 8, would this be just a singe LAU-7 on the pylon?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  15. I would not recommend the Kinetic kit to the casual modeler. It is a bit of a PITA. If you don't mind raised panel lines, go for the Revel kit.

As for the ram air scoop, you may be correct. I do have some photos of this aircraft and they are somewhat inconclusive and after second look I might agree it shouldn't be there. Well, still more accurate than a Hollywood movie :salute:/>

Hmm.. I'll have to mull that over. Have 2 Revell A-6 kits on tap for next year. One is set aside for KA-6D modification, the other will be backdated to A-6A. Was wanting to pick up 1 more A-6E kit since I have the Aeromaster CVW-8 77/78 decal set, but I'm a little hesitant to use the A-6 decals, since both BUNOs represented in that set equate to KA-6Ds (surprised I haven't seen anyone pick up on that). Maybe I'll just one them for my KA-6D instead of the other decals I had planned.

Well, as far the history of the bird you modeled - I looked into it and ot started life as an A-6A, was updated to A-6E standard (at which point the ram scoop would've been added)in the 1970's, and was rewinged with composite wings in the late 80's/early 90's before being retired. Either way.. Still way better than my skills are capable of at this point. Can't wait to see that 1/32 Tomcat I sent you.

  16. Great looking build. I've been hesitant on the Kinetic A-6 kits. I may have to breakdown and get one.

I do have one question though. This is supposed to represent and A-6A correct? I only ask because I don't recall a ram scoop on the rear of the fuselage at the tail base for A models.
