CF-188s were originally equipped with SJU-9/10 seats, which is similar to the SJU-5/6. In recent years they've been upgraded to the SJU-17 ejection seats, although I don't know if all CF-188s were upgraded to these.
I've ordered most of my resin seats thru spruebrothers, but since they are common aftermarket part you should be able to find them fairly easily.

I figured it would be. Just wanted to make sure.. much thanks.

Anyone ever built this kit? I have to opportunity to pick this kit up for a couple bucks, but was wondering if it's raised or recessed panel lines. Anyone know?
-
Depending on how bad the area is (depth of the scratch/damage, size of area affected), I've had some success with a scratch remover buffing agent such as Novus scratch remover. I found it doesn't work so well though if I have do some heavy sanding prior or if the damage is deep.

Thanks for condolences guys. Upon further inspection, I found some other issues. The list of repairs gets longer..
- I'll have to crack open the canopy, as there is some type of dust, probably putty flakes or something on the inside of the canopy that wasn't there before.Hopefully the white glue didn't seal it too tight, or else I may need to get a replacement.
- Need to re-glue the HUD back into place as its currently lodged between the windshield and the IP coaming. Guess I didn't glue it down enough.
- The starboard nose ALR-67 antenna housing is missing and I'm hoping it's still glued to the missing upper nose section, as I still haven't found that piece. Don't really want to scratch building that as I don't scratch build small round shapes very well.
Think I'll take your advice Kevan and just box it up and shelve it. Finish my current projects and come back to it once those are done. Was working on my Academy F-14 for a bit last night.. but my heart just wasn't in it. Oh well. Sucking it up and moving on.
-
Could be worse I'm thinking. Once you find the upper nose then it should go back together decently well. Maybe it won't be a contest winner but it looks like it broke cleanly. Not sure how the landing gear decided to separate if that's repairable or not. The canopy came through unscathed so there's that!
Always a silver lining.
And yes I think I'd be having a word with my neighbor.
Also move your display shelves to an interior wall!
yeah, it's in better shape than first thought, but given what it looked like before the crash (unfortunately didn't get a pic of it), its going to be painful to look at.
- The tails were more jarred loose than broke off, so a little snading in the groves and back in they'll go.
- The horizontal stabilizers have lost their connecting bar to kept them in sync, so I'll need to glue them straight to the rear fuselage in order to hold them in place.
- All the antennas are miraculously in one piece. AoA probes, pitot tubes and underside swept antenna broke off, but are otherwise undamaged
- Some of the sway braces to connect the rockeyes to the VERs are gone or toasted. I have plenty of extras from the A-6 kit to replace them.. just a pain to do so. Also seem to missing one of the rockeyes
My main concern is putting the area in front of the windsheild back in if I ever find it. It was a resin piece that included the IFF antenna. It took a lot of filling, sanding and rescribing to get that looking remotely decent and lined up. Now that that area is decal'd, I'm a little leary about trying to do it again. I need to find it so I can see just how clean the break was. The nose cone did break mostly clean (some minor sanding to get rid of the old CA glue), so hopefully it won't be too bad.

I am sorry man. I feel for you.
Now, what the heck did your neighbor do that was hard enough to knock you shelf off the wall???
sounded like something being thrown against the wall.. I don't have anything else on that wall so hard to say how much force was put into it.. enough to rip out a dry wall anchor apparently..

I put the finishing touches on my last build yesterday, A Revell F-18C kit with rescribe'd lines, done up with VMFA-212 markings and armed with 8 rockeyes I scavenged from a Revell A-6E kit. It was by far and away the best looking build I've done since I returned to modelling last year.
I set it on my display shelf and walked away to start dinner. 30 minutes later I hear a loud thud from my neighbors apartment, then a loud crash from my display room. I rush in find my labor of love in pieces.

I can't even begin to contemplate fixing it because I can't find the upper forward nose section. It's as if it vanished into thin air.
3 months.. $60 in aftermarket parts.. countless hours of filling, sanding, rescribing.. gone in seconds.. May you rest in pieces...

I was going thru my stash the other day when I came across my Esci US-3A Viking kit and it got me thinking if there were any VRC-50 decals out there for this kit.Be nice if there were since I'm not too big on the kit decals. Anyone know?

I'm looking for a Testors F/A-18 Hornet, kit no. 593. The kit is essentially the prototype mold from the late 70's/early 80's with US Marine and CAF markings. I really only need the kit for certain parts (Fuselage weapon stations for sparrow missiles, early style tails), but will take the whole kit.
Please send a PM with price if you have this kit and are willing to part with it.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I got some work ahead of me.

Hello all!
I'm moving from California to Texas and will pass through Tuscon, Arizona. My late father's F-111F is located in the boneyard and I'd love to pay my respects and see the old bird again. Does anyone know if it's possible to visit a specific aircraft, or if there is anyone I can talk to who might be able to set that up? I am active military, if that would make it easier. Thanks!
I don't believe it's possible. The boneyard tours are offered by neighboring Pima Air & Space Museuem and only occur during the week. You can check out their website for specifics (under AMARC tours) When I was still on active duty, the only way I could get into the boneyard was when I had to visit specific buildings that were located inside of it, and even then I had to be escorted. I don't know anyone there now, so I couldn't arrange anything. Basically, unless you know someone high up, it may not happen.

I recently learned that a friend of mine is retiring from the Coast Guard and I want to build him a 1/48 Jayhawk as part of his retirement gift. I normally do jets, so I'm a little unfamiliar when it comes to the better helicopter kits. I've only seen 2 Jayhawk kits so far, the Skunkworks and Hobby Boss offerings. Anyone have an opinion on which is the better kit, or are they the same kit reboxed?

Has anyone here built the 1/72 Minicraft NASA F-18 kit? I'm interested in this kit because I'm building a 1/72 prototype line and wanted to do the X-53 AAW aircraft and was curious if this kit had the correct parts and decals.

There's an article on the IPMS Canada website that discusses a lot of the differences as well.
F/A-18A/C to CF-18 hornet conversion
Another note is that Swiss Hornets have been upgraded to include systems that appear in the later blocks of USN/USMC C/D models, most visible is the IFF antennae in front of the cockpit windscreen and the use of Dual Chaff Buckets instead of the Single Chaff Buckets
Here's another article talking about the Swiss governments more recent upgrades to it's hornet fleet
I think also that the pylons for stations 2 and 8 (outboard wing pylons) are slightly different, as I heard that the Swiss developed a different pylon in order to carry AIM-120 AMRAAMs on these stations, but I can't confirm that.
F-4Dable models made a nice decal sheet for these birds, and it included Finnish and Spanish hornets as well, but I think that sheet is long out of print.
Good luck with the build.

MAW-Decals' MAW Hornets Part III includes decals for a ATARS equipped bird from VMFA(AW)-533, but that's a 1/48th sheet (the BuNo is 164876 with a modex of 06). I finished my ATARS bird with this set and it came out nicely. As mentioned previously, pretty much all the ATARS birds are line jets and therefore don't have the flashy paint jobs that the CO birds would.
I learned from one of my Marine friends that while any block 14 and up D-model is capable of using ATARS, only 3 systems per AW squadron were allocated. On top of that, even though the system is supposed to be modular, the modified nose gear doors were supposedly custom made for each aircraft, and as a result it was decided not to remove the system from each bird unless for maintenance and training. He wasn't sure about the custom made doors part, but it was definetly decided not to move the systems from one bird to another.

Thanks for the input guys. Since these will be most likely be wheels down on the ground, guess I don't have to worry about em too much then.

I'm going to start dipping into my Tomcat kits finally, but I had a question on the glove vanes.
All of my builds will be 14A models from the 77-82 timeframe but I was wondering if the glove vanes were still being used at this time or if they had already been deactivated. I haven't been able to find any definitive answer yet on the subject and was wondering if anyone here knows.

Looking for a complete sheet of decals from the newer boxing of this kit (has VFA-122 decals). My kit is missing these decals and I am lacking the stencil data and a few others unique to this kit. PM if you you have one you can part with.

As for the unit details, T-38C's with VN tail codes belong to the 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance AFB. The T-38C's are flown by the 5th and 25th FTS.
T-38C's wearing tail code MY belonged to the 479th Flying Training Group at Moody AFB. These were flown by the 49th and 435th FTS, although some these may have been T-38B models. The 49th FTS was active at Moody beginning in 2000, and the 435th FTS beginning in 2001. Both units were disbanded in 2007 when flight training operations at Moody ceased.
These aircraft carried both 2-tone and 3-tone schemes over the past decade since the kit was released. I believe that most are painted in the 3-tone scheme now, but it's been awhile since I've been out to the training bases so I could be wrong.
Photos of these paint schemes seems to really be affected by lighting. Gunship Gray is the darker gray, but in some photos, the gunship grey looks lighter (almost Dark Ghost Grey) or darker than usual. The lighter gray is either Neutral Gray (FS36270), Light Ghost Gray (FS36375), or Aircraft Gray (FS36473). You may want to do some test painting to see what will give you the grey tones you are trying match, but the above colors should give you a good starting point. These birds also have a glossy look to them.
Hope this helps a bit.

Some nice super bug pics. I miss going down to inner harbor and fels point..

CF-188 Ejection Seat
in Tools 'n' Tips
Posted
As an addendum to what I wrote earlier, The SJU-5/6 (used in USN/USMC F/A-18A/Bs) is virtually identical the SJU-9/10, the different being mainly in the straps and harness. In the SJU-5/6, the pilot wore a parachute harness that was then strapped into the seat. In the SJU-9/10, the harness is integrated into the seat. So in essence, you should be able model a SJU-9/10 using and SJU-5/6 resin replacement. Cutting Edge made one long time ago that you could model either way depending on how you used the straps, but, good luck finding that one. As for a specific one, I've never seen a specific resin 1/48 SJU-9/10, I've just used resin SJU-5/6s in their place, the only real difference in my builds is just painting the SJU-9/10 seats matte black instead of using flat black enamels (yes, there is a difference between matte and flat).
One thing I thought I might mention is that CF-188s now have 2 video cameras in the cockpit, mounted to either side of the canopy frame. Not sure if you were going to detail that or not, thought I'd mention it.
