  1. So I'm working on a project that currently has me redoing a lot of panel lines and rivets.  I have a test piece going right now with milliput where I smeared it over some rivet lines and then used mr color lacquer thinner to "thin"/"cut" it with using a vigorous back and forth motion with a q tip.  I know milliput is great in that it dries rock had and can be scribed/riveted over once its fully cured, but I'm worried with the current method I used that the milliput won't completely fill in the rivets, maybe it'll need another 1-2 applications after it dries?

Does anyone know of a good putty that you can scribe/rivet well once its cured?  How about Tamiya white putty?  I normally use CA glue for this type of work, but this involves a larger area of rivets I need to fill in (flat surface) and isn't really that feasible as it could result in grooves/warping/uneven surfacing.

    Thoughts, suggestions, ideas?

    Thanks

  2. I'm currently doing a big 1/32 Su-27 Flanker project featuring 3 of them, so I've been doing lots of research on Russian colors.  They often weather heavily because they're kept outside most of the time (at least the Su-27s are, and, by extension,  I assume the MiG-29s as well) so the colors will weather, fade, bleach, have touch ups, stains, etc. I like the Akan line as they're matched to actual Russian planes/colors, and usually it'll require weathering with various "mottling" techniques using white either mixed into the actual colors or as a very thin mix to gradually achieve the effect you're after.  They also make a MiG-29 set, and you can get them in acrylic, lacquer, and enamel I believe.

  3. Hello, I'm looking for reference photos of the Israeli Air Force F-16B tail number 998, of the 140th 'Golden Eagles' squadron.  I have a few good reference photos that show the upper surface camouflage and a little of the right ride side, but I need some more photos/more detail of the right side of the fuselage and right horizontal stabilator in more detail.  I even found some video clips that show some grainy/blurry photos of '998' but was hoping maybe someone had some other reference photos they could share?

    Thanks

  4. 1. I've always used either light gull gray (FS 26440) or more frequently USN grey-blue (FS 35237) but you need to use the Mr Color or Mr Hobby as those are darker and greyer, for my Su-27 landing gear struts (check references for the specific plane you're modeling) and those are about as close a match as you can get.

    2. The intake ducts are a little different, older Su-27s seem to have a yellowish tinted bare metal (I use a mix of Alclad burnt metal with "mists" of other metallic colors until I'm satisfied with a match to the reference photos.  The newer model Su-27SM2/3s or Su-35s may be painted a grey color or a more aluminum-type bare metal color.

    Hope that helps

  5. Thats really nice looking weathering, you nailed the subtle look to it in parts.  The fun is in the weathering, and this must've been a blast!  Theres a photo of an A-6E Intruder thats from the first Gulf War that is really weathered and dirty, great looking bird!

  6. The Harder & Steenbeck Infinity is worth every penny, as far as the cost, if you hunt around a little you should be able to find a used one for a much more reasonable (although still pricey) amount.  I too freehand my camouflage and it does remarkable work with the 0.4mm nozzle for acrylics (the smaller needles do work, but usually you need a lacquer or enamel based paint).  I live in Denver, so the altitude and pressure affect the drying time significantly, I've most recently been using AKAN acrylic paints for a big Flanker project.  The detail work I can do with it is incredible, since the detail work is so fine I do have to keep a q-tip next to me soaked in thinner to remove the buildup of acrylic paint on the end, and while I do have to do this fairly frequently when I do fine detail work its certainly not bothersome.  In short, I would highly recommend the Harder & Steenbeck, they're very sturdy and well-made (good German engineering 🙂) and you can find accessories parts fairly easily.  Hope this helps.

  7. I always use CA glue and accelerator to fill gaps, and can help with some mismatch/steps too.  The trick is to use progressively finer grades of sandpaper/sandsticks to smooth it out and describe afterwards and to sand it within a few minutes of using the accelerator.  It'll also make the join ROCK solid too.

  8. So for the regular standard-issue Su-27 Flanker I'm having trouble finding out what color is used for some of the pylons.  I'm aware some of the pylons have the light blue fuselage color on a small portion, but what I'm trying to find out is what is the grey color used for the missile pylons?  Is it the same grey used on the upper surfaces camouflage scheme?  Or is it a different color.  Any help is appreciated.

  9. So I'm working on a big 1/32 Su-27 Flanker project, featuring 3 of 'em.  I have the very hard to find Linden Hill decal sheet, 'Guardians of the North.'  However, one of the planes is 'Blue 36' and has a small marking on the right forward fuselage where the decal would probably be no bigger than about a 1/4 inch or so and the problem is its not on the sheet.  I wanted to know if there was someone out there (or  a company) that would help me design this one small decal for a reasonable fee.  Please send me a PM if you'd be able to help.

    Thanks

  10. Sorry for the delayed response, I haven’t been at the bench that much as of late but I will get some more work done on it soon.  The first Flanker I’m doing is more of a test to try out the Akan paints and try some airbrush techniques to get the heavily weathered effect of the paint on these Arctic circle area planes, and it’s ‘Blue 36’  There’s one little marking that I would like to add on the right forward fuselage, but there’s no decals for it, so it’s going to have to be done with delicate airbrushing and small very precise masks, and maybe use some spare decals to approximate it as close to the real thing as I can.  Unless someone would be willing to make one small custom decal for me?  🙂.   And to answer one of the questions, I will be doing a work-in-progress for it, I’ve taken some photos from the first test build but not full documentation with photos and build log; that will come with the next two Flankers which I plan to thoroughly document their progress.  There will also be a lot of scratch building for the diorama in the way of terrain, tarmac, bunker, etc.  I’m also excited to try my hand at a couple of the 1/35 Russian ground vehicles I’ve picked up.  It’s going to be quite large but I’m really excited to get to working on this big project again very soon.

  11. Thats very nice of you, but lets just say after countless hours scouring the internet and tracking down contacts I eventually hit the "mother load" of reference photos for Blue 38 and a few others from this squadron, I've got every angle! I'm working on a massive 1/32 diorama, with 3 su-27 flankers, an Mi-8 hip, ground vehicles, and lots of other little details and goodies.   It'll take a while because I'm having to go very slow with these to get the paint job just right.  Its been a lot of fun, but also TONS of work to airbrush such a massive plane (and I haven't even finished the first flanker)

  12. I'm looking for a full or partial set of Linden Hill 1/32 Su-27 Flanker 'Guardians of the North' Decals.  Specifically I'm looking for the markings for Blue 36 and/or Blue 41 (The little black circle with the owl/hawk outlined in white holding a missile and the 'star medal' decal with red syrillic writing to the right of it). Please send me a PM or email to dsahling1@yahoo.com

    Thanks

  13. I'm looking a set (or partial) of Linden Hill 1/32 Su-27 Flanker 'Guardians of the North' Decals, specifically I'm looking for the small black circle with the owl/hawk outlined in white and the decal that looks like 'star medal' with some red cyrillic writing to the right of it (the markings used for Blue 36/41).  Please send me a PM or email to dsahling1@yahoo.com.
