  1. Update! I got some paint on the model. This will be the first stage of the weathering process. I still have some small detail painting left as well as scorch marks and deep impact shell damage. Filters will be applied while I print out some custom decals for the Zaku. All in in all I pretty satisfied with the way things are turning out do far. The project is moving along just as I had imagined it. Let's hope my luck rides out!! I used Pollyscale Soviet Green for the light greens and Tamiya Olive Green for the dark greens. The Cockpit Cover and 'soles'of the Zaku feet are Model Mast
  2. It's been a while since my last post but you all know how that goes, spending away from modeling is just as much a part of the hobby as building and completing them! I've only managed to prime the Zaku as I am still determining the lay out of the diorama and what all materials I will be using. On to the photos...... Additional modifications included weld seams on the head and battle damage to the suit and shield. More to come!!
  3. Small update: I haven't had much time to work on the I-6 due to a new job and the fact that I'm working on 4 other projects at the same time (I just recently started the 1/25 Dark Knight BatPod for a sci-fi entry in the september SCMA contest). I don't have many references/pix of this watercraft so I've been using the box art as a guide. But here is where I am so far. Added the anchors (once agian not sure if there was one on the real sub but I see it on the box art). Replaced the plastic masts? :unsure:/>/>/> telescopes and radio antennae with 1/32 brass rods. Added detail
  4. Thanks Dave that's exactly what I was thinking and judging from the box art, you really can't tell whether it was there or not (hence it being obstructed). I did manage to find an image of another Japanese sub the Yokosho with a similar set up but it is clearly not the sub I am modeling. You can see the 13mm just aft of the sail, however, and this is how I planned to model mine. Thanks again for the confirmation and if you can post any pix of the sub or the I-1 it would really make my journey a lot easier! :salute:/>
  5. Yes that really sucks about the decals but here's a tip for any masking you do in the future where decals are in question: Never use blue painter's tape whether it's 3M or any brand for that matter! Only use Tamiya yellow tape and detack it. I have found that this works 90% of the time. If you still have doubts you can cut out a template from sticky note paper using only the sticky portion and place that under the Tamiya tape. Still in doubt? Finally you can use liquid mask over the decals. I have never had a decal peel off from liquid mask whether it's sealed or unprotected. Great job so far
  6. After looking at the instruction set and box art I noticed a discrepancy. The instructions state that the armament for the I-6 had (1) 5-inch gun and (1) 13mm gun but in the history and on the box art, there was only the 5-inch gun. I would like to know where the 13mm, if any, were mounted as I want to as accurately as possible, display this model. Does anyone have a clue where the 13mm gun would be placed? I am assuming aft of the ship but once again I think it may be an obstruction for the float plane.
  7. Thanks Bill for this in dept FAQ you sent me!! :worship:/>/>/> I will definitely make the neccesary corrections as these are definitely things that competition judges scrutinize over!! I wasn't even aware of some of the simple errors I made! This is exactly why I love this site and it's community of experienced, eagle-eyed members :thumbsup:/>/>/> !! You guys really help us fledglings become the modelers we aspire to be and besides, I really appreciate constructive criticism! Cheers Bill and please keep the comments and suggestions coming as I want to win the Best Scale Je
  8. I've begun assembly of the hull and sub-assemblies mainly the conning tower and it's attachment points. It goes together rather well and quickly. I only have a few more parts to add on the hull then I will stop to primer it and simulate the wooden deck before I finish assembly.
  9. Excellent job on the weathering! Nice!!!!
  10. I managed to find one build of the same model and same scale on another ship building site and it appears that the modeler did his sub with a light ghost grey hull and wood decking. I think I'll stick with the box art and do mine with a Charcoal/lightened Black scheme. I will add the wood planking though. I have a technique for simulating deck wood I've been itching to try out I learned from a Japanese modeler on The Plamo Tsukuro series a Japanese modeling program (why can't we have those here stateside :crying2:/> ). I'll display my model on a small vignette with water while it's chain
  11. I am in the process of building one of my older submarine kits the Minicraft 1/700 IJN I-6 submarine. The only problem is I have little to no references other than the box art. Can anyone post some pix (black & white or color) of the sub or direct me to a site with good material? I don't want to start without at least having some knowledge of the hull color, whether it had wood planking for the deck, markings and so on. Once I get enough material I'll start posting progress pix as well as images of the kit. Thanks in advance!
  12. I've managed to get the panel lines drawn on and the touch up areas on the wings have been painted. Finally the F-8 can stand on it's own three legs! :woot.gif:/> Now I only have to paint a few areas here and there mainly the air system exhaust heat shield (Black) and the area where the horizontal stabilizers meet the fuselage just aft of the tail plane autopilot control system and the tail plane hydraulic control jack (Stainless Steel). Once that's done I'll coat it with Future and start the decal application process!
  13. Dude not only are you an outstanding modeler you are a great humanitarian!! My prayers go out to the victims of this tragic event and I wish only the best for you and this most exquisite build!!
  14. What do you plan on doing with the old Hasegawa kit? I have an interest in it.
  15. I've begun to draw in the panel lines with a .3mm mechanical pencil. I opted out on using the Prismacolor pencil as it was too dark for the scale. I also puttied and sanded that crack in the wing on the dropped slat I missed during the primer stage. Hopefully I can get that wing touched up and the panel lines drawn in by the weekend. Thanks for viewing! :thumbsup2:/>
