  1. Here is one that I just finished. Painted in ModelMaster Enamel
  2. It would either thin the paint or it could 'curdle' the paint and ruin it. You may want to experiment on this. If I were you I would try to use something other than lacquer if possible. It is some pretty wicked stuff. If I were wanting to thin testors paints I would (and I do) use hardware store mineral spirits. This stuff is no more expensive than lacquer thinner and has always worked well for me. Chris
  3. Buy a set of earth tone pastels and/or a set of pastels that runs from white to black with a lot of gray shades in between. Not sure if walmart has them but I bought some off of ebay for pretty cheap. Next, get a couple of those inexpensive pill holders (the ones that have a little bin for each day of the week). Now get your sandpaper and sand a little pile off of each pastel that you think you need and put one color into each of the pill compartments. Bingo, you have a really nice weathering kit for only a little $$. Chris
  4. +1 on this. But if you do not have access to an airbrush you may be able to use subtle application of pastels on the different panels on your plane
  5. Could you mix up some semi-transparent paint (for your mottled color) and apply it with a piece of torn natural sponge? If this is too stark it could always be toned down with a thin overcoat of the base color. Chris
  6. Els, I can imagine how your son feels. Went we went out to Lackland in Oct for graduation out daughter couldnt wait to get away from Lackland. From what she says there were basically no fun memories there :) I imagine your son feels the same way and is not looking forward to an extended stay there!!
  7. First post here? Sure hope this wont be your last! That is one super nice looking plane there. Chris
  8. Dont buy the kind for wood floors, I picked up a bottle by mistake. I brush painted some on my plane and it dried with an orange peel finish. Tried it again with the same result.
  9. Really appreciate the positive stuff guys. I plan to read some of these to her next time we talk. And Hitch, no hard feelings here. Sometimes print just doesnt bring across what we really mean. :) Chris
  10. Thanks for all the positive stuff guys. I think that some of you that seem to be coming down a little hard on her may have gotten the wrong idea. Sure she wanted something different but come on she just turned 19. She is by no means a Private Benjamin but instead has always been a gym rat who gave night time exercise classes to the girls in her barracks during BMT. It is her mom and me who are probably most upset, what parent doesnt want the best for their child? And who knows, maybe Ellsworth is the 'best' right now for her. I really do not know which is why I am asking here. Chris
  11. She will be tracking maintenance on B1 bombers. She joined for security which was her dream and they took that away and gave her this job instead. And now she gets this base that is a (2.5 out of 10) I just wanted her to be happy with this very important decision that she made, and one that I am so proud of her for making. But it seems like everything is going wrong for her. :( I just dont want her to look on these years and say 'oh my God' I have really made the worst decision in my life. I know that regret can really drag down your life. I do not want her to live thinking she messed up. C
  12. He is right, when you dilute the paint to really thin it then you also dilute the 'glue' in the paint. I am sorry that you are having trouble getting the correct kind of paint. Have you considered getting fewer colors of 'model' paint and just mixing them to make different colors as needed?
  13. Thanks for the review, cant wait to see this myself. I expected the Peter/Valentine subplot to be really abbreviated but did not think that they would leave it out entirely. Also, sorry to hear there was not more of Bean (Ho Ender, Ho Bean!). Perhaps Peter Jackson should have directed this so that there would have been 3 movies exhaustively covering the book with about 1 movie worth of invented scenes and characters thrown in for good measure :)
  14. I ask this because my daughter (who recently joined the AF) has received this as her first base posting. She is pretty upset and figures it to be a frozen wasteland at the end of the world. We are from Georgia and know little of endless winters and only get about 1" of snow every 3-4 yrs. She was hoping for somewhere wonderful with warmth and beaches like Florida or California. Can anyone give me something positive to tell her about this base so that she wont be so sad and dread it so? She is supposed to go at the end of the year. Thanks Chris
  15. Thats 2 months work??? Wow, that looks great! It takes me about six months to complete a model. ;) Really nice work there and I love the subtle darkening of the panel lines.
  16. You need to remove the paint where you want the glue bond to be. Model glue works by actually melting the two pieces of plastic together. The glue cannot contact and melt the plastic if there is a layer of paint protecting the plastic. The paint can be sanded off or scraped with a knife.
  17. Somebody else mentioned the last 5%, couldnt agree more. By this time I am so ready for it to be finished and to start the next plane that this part seems to drag on forever to me. This part actually (and unfortunately) includes the missiles/bombs and other ordnance. Something that I really have to make myself do.
  18. Totally agree with this post. But...if it is not possible for you to use true model paint and you have to use the craft paints then there are ways that you might improve your finish. First, the camel hair brushes are usually terrible things. If you are strapped for cash then go to walmart and buy an inexpensive pack of the white synthetic brushes from their craft section. These are much stiffer than camel hair and might help you move that gooey stuff around. Second, if you are not already doing it those paints need to be thinned to a much thinner consistency to brush on a hard surface such as
  19. Ditto on getting a regulator. Airbrushing without one is kind of like trying to drive a car with the gas pedal mashed to the floor...all the time ;)
  20. If you are in a well vented place (outdoors) the fumes are not much of a factor. The dustmask protects you from atomized paint.
