Why are they carrying targeting pods?

Both are Vietnam vintage. The GBU-11 is a 3000-lb. laser guided bomb primarily used in the Vietnam era made by adding laser guidance and fins to a M118E1 bomb. Same with the Mk 83 - guidance kit and fins added to an Mk 83 bomb.

I feel like Kitty Hawk is improving with each release, and have never built a Zvezda kit. Any thoughts on which option might be better?

Only issue I'm aware of is the too square vertical stabilizers, which has been fixed on subsequent releases. Other than that the shape is spot on. Despite a few futzy areas like the nose and gear, engineering and fit is better than Hasegawa of Hobby Boss offerings.
