  1. I have also built the Hasegawa Raptor, although I built mine wheels up bays closed in-flight, so no real need for aftermarket.  The shape of the kit is very good, unlike the Academy kit which has a severely misshapen nose and some vertical tail issues.

But there are some issues with the Hasegawa kit.  It is a bit over engineered and assembly can be a bit tedious, although the fit overall is excellent (the canopy on this kit is by far the best fitting canopy I have ever used).  Also, the RAM panels are way too pronounced, and many modellers sand them down, although I was too lazy to do so and they really don't stand out quite so much once the model is painted and weathered.

    Here is mine:

  2. In that case, to help build the specific airframe he flew, you could ask for the BORT # in the picture and timeframe that he flew, as that would give a pretty good idea of which camo scheme to use as well as the unit markings on tail.

  3. Was it a single or twin seater?  If single, it would have to be an Su-33 if it had blue camo.

If it was a two seater, it is likely an Su-30SM.

What scale?  in 1/48 the choices are the Kinetic Su-33 or the upcoming Minibase Su-33, and Kitty Hawk just released the only Su-30SM in this scale.  In 1/72 I am not as familiar with the options, but I think Zvezda makes both an Su-33 and Su-30SM and Hasegawa also makes an Su-33.

  5. Hi Everyone!

Back once again with my latest completed project, this time the 1/48 Hasegawa A-7E Corsair II in VA-86 Sidewinders markings circa 1978 aboard the USS Nimitz.  I have always been attracted to this scheme ever since seeing it in the movie "The Final Countdown".  Really love the huge orange diamond on the spine aft of the cockpit.

Used the Aires cockpit on this, and the fit is pretty much perfect.  Highly recommended for this kit.  Also used the Meng Short Range Missiles set for the Sidewinders, Hasegawa Weapons Set A for the mk. 82s, and Hasegawa Weapons Set C for the Shrikes.  Decals are from AeroMaster Colorful Corsairs sheet.  These performed quite well, although an error in the instructions had me incorrectly plate the large roundel on the wing and smaller one on the fuselage.  Good thing there were two sets of these on the sheet so I was able to fix the issue once I realized they were backwards.

The kit is quite nice, and fit is pretty good.  It takes a lot of work to make the intake seamless since basically you have 4 parts and multiple seams coming together in that area to take care of.  But overall it was a pleasurable build that took me just over a month to complete.

    Decals: AeroMaster Colorful Corsairs 45-587

  6. Not sure if the forum update cured the problem or I got lucky with the format of my latest Display Case post, but it appears that the issue may be resolved.  I was able to make a topic using the same copy and paste text I used previously that caused the error to occur.

  7. Hi all!

Here is my latest completed project, the Hasegawa F-14B Tomcat of VF-103 Jolly Rogers aboard the USS Dwight D Eisenhower in 1998.  This project is the only one I have ever started that I did not finish straight through.  I finished the cockpit put then put the build on hold as a deadline for an IPMS club contest approached, so I moved on to another project that fit into the theme of that contest.  It stayed on hold for over a year before I decided to go back to it as part of an F-14 Group Build on Scalemates.

As you know, this is the notorious Hasegawa Tomcat.  This is my third one, and I learned quite a bit from my first two tries.  I deviated from the directions in three key places:

    1.  Intake Assembly

    2.  Fuselage Join

    3.  Beaver Tail Attachment

Basically what I did was to install the intake trunking BEFORE putting the inner ducting in.  This allowed me to get a fantastic join of the intake trunking, which gave me fits last time.  For the fuselage join, I cut out the rear bulkhead of the forward fuselage, and attached the completed forward fuselage to only the upper portion of the rear fusleage pancake.  Also gave me a much better fit than last time.  Third, attach the upper portion of the beaver tail to the upper portion of the fuselage pancake, and attach the lower beaver tail to the lower fuselage pancake.  This was a HUGE improvement from the last time.  The fit was almost perfect doing it this way.

Decals are Fightertown Decals Bone Supremacy Sheet, and they performed flawlessly as usual.

Other aftermarket additions are the Black Box F-14B Cockpit Set, Master Pitot, AMK Weapons Set for the Sidewinders, and the Meng Weapons set for the Phoenix and Sparrow missiles.  The Black Box set really fits nicely with minor modification.  Really happy with how that turned out.

    Anyway, I hope you like!

That's one beast of a helicopter I like that you folded the blades decal and weathering look great too.

Thanks Night Owl!  I really love the look of the folded rotors but with the non-folded tail.  Probably not a very likely configuration, but it looks cool!

Nice work! I've got this kit and I'm working up the nerve to take on the riveting job.

Thanks P&P!  Yeah, the riveting job is very daunting because there are just so many!  I had never done it before, but it got easier as I went once I figured out what best worked for me.  Even still, I could only do so much before I had enough and let it sit for another day of riveting.  This went on for the better part of a week or so. LOL

Looks like you put a lot of extra effort into this build.  From what I can see, it looks like a great build.  Wish I could have something this nice in my display cabinet.

Just my opinion, but I think the pictures would be better with a light colored background or the use of a flash.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks C2j!

I do like the black background for my pics, although I agree for a dark subject like this it may not be the best choice.  Sometimes I go for artsy style photos and admit that may not be the best for showing the model.

  10. Oh wow, that cockpit looks AMAZING!

I built this kit somewhat recently, but definitely did not do the detail work you are doing, mine was mostly just an OOB in-flight build.  I do have the remnants of the TwoBobs Langley Raptors sheet, if you would be interested in that, although I am not sure how much useful is left as far as stencils and whatnot.

  11. I tried to type two more paragraphs in my original post but they gave me errors.  I will try to post them here:

I used some aftermarket for this kit.  Some Eduard exterior photoetch, Wolfpack MH-53E update set, and Res-kit refueling boom.  The decals were mostly OOB and Vulcan 552 specific decals came from the Wolfpack set.  All decals from both manufacturers performed flawlessly.  I was very impressed.  The only issue I had was the kit supplied walkway decals are a rather light gray, and from the pics I saw they should be either black or faded to almost the color of the rest of the exterior.  So I used some white glue mixed with baby powder and Tamiya Rubber Black paint to recreate the color and texture of these walkways.

I decided to pose the model with folder rotors and non-folded tail because I have seen pics like this and like the look.  BUT, I found out the hard way near the end of the build that the model is a tail-sitter in this configuration once I added the folded rotors.  I had to put some fishing weights on blue tac (all painted black for reduced visibility) in the cargo area to offset this and to get it to sit flat.  If I had it to do over, I would have put one or two fishing weights at the front of each sponson to keep the nose down.

I still have trouble with Helos compared to jets, to me there are just harder.  But I feel like I made some big strides in my helo building capability with this project, so that makes me happy.

  12. Hi all!

After about 3 months, this one is finally finished!  The 1/48 Academy MH-53E Sea Dragon from HM-14 Vanguard, callsign "Vulcan 552", circa 2013.  This aircraft was destroyed in an accident in June 2012, but with no injuries or fatalities luckily.

I have wanted to build this kit for quite some time, but wanted to wait until I felt my abilities were high enough to do it justice.  Well that time is now!  The Academy kit is really quite nice, great detail, and it really fits very nice everywhere.  I used very little putty on this build.  But there is one big achilles heel with this kit.  There are no rivets.  The actual aircraft has them EVERYWHERE.  So I decided to try my hand at adding rivets for the first time.  I did so using the RB Rivet-R tool, and it worked very nicely!   It was, however, VERY time consuming and VERY tedious.  It took me pretty much a full week to do it all, as I could only do so much in one sitting before I had to leave it be.  The one nice thing is that apparently Academy must have intended to add panel lines where the rows of rivets should be, because there are VERY faint lines where the rows of rivets should be.  They are hard to see, but if you use some lighting and look at certain angles they can be seen and used as a guide for the rivet tool and tape.

Did you find out what caused this? Because I'm having the exact same problem with my in-progress thread. Wanted to post an update, but the forum software won't let me. Copied from Word document or form another site, I'll get the "500 Internal Server Error" message. I can't even get a preview. In some cases, when I try two or three times, the whole forum will crash for me and ARC won't available for a certain time. Can't say how long, but a couple of minutes at least. At the same time, other websites are fine, so I don't think it's the browser.

I was able to post a short sentence, but when I tried to edit that and post the lengthy update, the software will tell me that "This comment can no longer be edited. It may have been moved or deleted, or too much time may have passed since it was posted for it to be edited."

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME!!!! LOL

The first time it happened I was like "uh oh, I think I just broke ARC Forums" LOL.  But after a certain period of time it seemed like all was fine and I sighed in relief.  Pretty funny though that I am not the only one that happened to.

I have this color, its way too blue. The real color is closer to a neutral dark gray. MRPs version is off too. Its too purple. AKAN is the closest.

    This is indeed very true.

I built the KH Su-35 using the MRP Eggplant, and immediately as I started to spray it thought "UH OH!" in my mind as it was obviously way too purple.  I went ahead and continued spraying it over the whole model and then misted a dark gray (I can't remember which one) over the entire model and that toned the purple down enough that I was happy with the color, although it might still be slightly too purple.

  16. This has also happened to me on a couple of occasions.  I have found that it doesn't have to do with pics, but more about the text.

On my latest Display Case topic (Academy Su-30MK2), when I tried to post it in whole with 10 pics and 3 paragraphs it gave me the Server 500 error.  So I did some testing, and found if I removed ALL the text it would post.  I had saved the entire post, and I tried to add one paragraph at a time via edit, the first one worked, but when I tried to add the second one I got the error.  I tried to then add the third, and also got the error.  It would only allow me to post the one (first) paragraph.  So there was something in the other two that caused the error, what it was I have no idea.

I had the same issue on a Kinetic Su-33 Display case post I made awhile back, but was able to get that one to work by removing just one paragraph.
