  1. Just my opinion, and I am standing by it.
  2. I would think that their insurance will be cancelled due to the accident. If not, it will now be unaffordable.
  3. I agree with both of you. The few remaining, intact, air worthy B-17's need to be saved for future generations.
  4. I have real concerns about allowing those planes to continue flying with passengers. My concern is regarding maintenance of the engines. OEM parts for those engines have not been made in a long, long time. I guess that it is possible to scavenge older engines for parts, but how safe is it to use old parts to replace old parts? I do not think that those planes are safe.
  5. I saw a photo of the B-17 taken from a chopper. The plane looks to be a total loss. Reports are that the plane crashed when trying to land. I saw that plane this past Summer in the Chicago area. It was an incredible looking plane. Just beautiful. I considered taking a ride in it, but the price was too high.
  6. I love that photo of the Mustang wading in the water.
  7. The HK kit is about $100.00 more than a Monogram/Revell kit on eBay. That's a lot of money. I guess that we will need to wait and see if the HK is worth it.
  8. The decals worked great!!! The smallest text is readable and the carrier film is clear.
  9. Well, this has been a long journey. I started this build in March 2018. The next month I put the kit on The Shelf Of Doom because I became feed up with the poor engineering of the model. In June, 2019, I decided to finish the kit. It took three months, and a number of sheets of Bare Metal Foil, to finish the kit. The WIP is here: Following are some photos of the finished build.
  10. This is the repaired joint using PPP. PPP is the best solution because the excess putty can be removed with a wet finger or wet Q-tip.
  11. Are you referring to this joint? It's really nasty. I used Perfect Plastic Putty to fill the seam. The area of the engine nacelle/pylon that is attached to the wing is not foiled, it is painted. After the putty dried I painted the PPP with Testors' aluminum paint. I'll take a photo and post the picture of the repaired seam tomorrow. The repair worked out pretty good.
  12. Thanks so much. Every time that I foil an airplane I get a little better at it.
  13. This is the final update to this build. The landing gear and the smaller bombs have been installed. Monogram did a really nice job on the landing gear. I used a rust colored wash on the gear and gear bays to simulate dust. The only thing left to do is to install the canopy, the pitot tube, the tail gun and touch-up the paint and foil.
  14. Yep, my kit is from 1985. Model kits have really changed in the past 34 years. For some reason, I have an obsession with older kits. My next build will be a 1981/1991 Monogram B-25 Strafer with the solid nose. And yes, it will be finished in my other obsession, Bare Metal Foil. It's too bad that there is not a current 1/48 B-58. It's a nice looking aircraft.
  15. Thanks for the kind words guys. This is the best looking of all of the planes that I have finished in foil. The big wings really show off the foil. However, this has been the most difficult model that I have built. Lots and lots of time wasting issues. Monogram must have had their "B" team working on this model.
  16. The four engines have been attached to the wings and the seams between the pylons have been filled. Almost finished. The last thing to be done is to install the landing gear. Each of the two main landing gear is made up from 10 parts!!! After which, the assembled gear need to be squeezed into the gear well.
  17. This is a handy tool when working on an upside-down aircraft. It is a foam block that is used by model shipbuilders to keep the hull from rocking. It securely holds an upside-down aircraft in a level position. I glued the outside engines to the wings and used a clamp to hold the engines in place. The outside seam between the engine and the wing looks pretty good. However, the inside seams are really bad, bad, bad. I'll need to use some PPP to fill the seams.
  18. Now that would be fun. Paint the B-58 in the same color as a B-52 and load it with JDAM's and cruise missiles. Maybe a Massive Ordnance Penetrator or two. There are probably some B-58 still on Ebay. I should take a look. It would take waaaaaaaaay less time to build a painted B-58 vs. a foiled one.
  19. Thanks for the kind words. Its been a long, slow slog through the mud, and I think it's a long way from being over.
  20. After a lot of sanding I finally got the bomb racks (green arrows) to fit reasonably well. The brass pins (red arrow) will be used to secure the bombs to the rack. The small nuclear bombs (if there is such a thing) are dry fitted to the racks. Here is a picture with the BIG BOMB dry fitted to the fuselage. This airplane was designed to be ONLY armed with nuclear bombs. There was no thought of being able to retrofit it for conventional bombs (the plane has no interior bomb bay). The framing on the canopy was finished in Bare Metal Foil. Since there are no precut
  21. I used Perfect Plastic Putty to fill the seam between the tail and the fuselage. It worked great. Next, I finished foiling the model. When I purchased this model from E-bay a couple of years ago I also purchased a set of Caracal Models decals printed by Cartograf. It is thing that I purchased the decals when I did because there are currently no decal sets for a 1/48 B-58 on the market. There are decals for about a dozen different aircraft. These are nice decals. Easy to apply, opaque colors and clear carrier film. Next I
  22. I just purchased a Monogram B-25J with a solid nose and eight guns in the nose. I started building the wings last week. Very nice fit. If you use enough clamps you will need very little putty on the seams.
