1/72nd Tamiya P-51D "Cripes A' Mighty"

Sorry for the delay in updating this thread. I've made a TON of progress on Preddy's last plane. The model and display are around 99% done. Still have a few more odds n ends to add. But here is how it all looks so far... Still have to paint and add the "barber pole" antenna and the twin rear views which I'll have to scratch build. Of course, I realized yesterday I built the wrong version of Preddy's a/c for this display base. Preddy only flew this a/c for a couple of weeks in December before he was shot down accidentally by friendly AA fire in Belgium on Christmas Day, 1944. The sce -

1/72nd Tamiya P-51D "Cripes A' Mighty"

Then I started on her home. I remembered I had a 1/72nd scale Eduard's Perforated Steel Plate base which I could use. I went down to my local Michael's and found a perfect sized wooden base with beveled edge. I cut and sanded the perforated steel plate to size and glued it directly to the base. I then cut and glued sheet styrene around the entire edge elevating it where I planned to have built up earth. I then added the retaining wall by cutting, sanding and gluing popsicle sticks and wooden dowel. Here is how that looks... -

Gear Bays...(oob) one final test fit before gluing... Primed with Aircraft Gray and lightly sanded with extremely fine sand paper where needed... Fuel tanks too... -
Hey All, First time I've tried doing a diorama of this kind. It started out as a wild and crazy daydream and quickly became a really fun project! Funny how that always seems to happen in this hobby of ours... So I envisioned doing a rendition of Maj. George Preddy's "Cripes O' Mighty" (leading Mustang Ace of the war with 26.83 kills to his credit). I have always loved bare metal a/c and this one is a beauty! Blue nose with a red rudder looks sharp to me. Throw in some invasion stripes for good measure and you got yourself one sweet lookin' bird! Here are some In Progress pics I took along t

What's on the ole model bench...my current WIP's

This pic better captures the iridescence effect on the HUD. I accomplished this by white gluing a piece of iridescent confetti on the regular clear HUD piece. The effect is quite striking I think. I plan to use the same technique on the Raptor... -

Hey All, Here is a pic of my current 1/72nd scale projects. The Lakenheath Mudhen is 99.8% done. I need to finish the rigging on Rickenbacker's Nieuport. I glued the fuselage halves together on the Raptor last night. And what will be George Preddy's "Cripes O' Mighty" still needs some final touches on the cockpit before fuselage assembly. Can you tell I have minor ADD? Happy Friday everyone...I'll post some close ups as well... Cheers, Dan

I love this kind of modeling. So cool man...so cool! Reminds me a little of my MIG-15 vs Sabre display with the Sabre pilot pulling a "Goose" and giving the MIG Pilot "the bird." Cant wait to see how it turns out! Regards, Dan

Noticed that there is discoloration on a panel on the port side near the nose cone. So I added that too. Its a bit light but I'll live with it... The Twobobs glo-tape for the wing tips cracked in numerous places when I tried to apply them. Only option was to mix some flat white and yellow paint and mask off the two areas. Here is the result. Not an exact match to the Twobobs decals but...again...I can live with it. I took up jogging a few months back. I run around a mapped out course around my neighborhood and its a good 3 mile trek. Done wonders to the beer belly. Anyhow, one day the -

Thanks for all the kind comments...I really appreciate them. Sorry for the delay between postings. Life gets hectic from time to time. As for the mighty "Mudhen," much progress has been made. I am waiting for some add-on decals from another talented and generous ARC'er, "Hoops" who is stationed over in Germany currently. He was able to correct the color and length for the tail stripes as the Twobobs version are too short (designed for Hasegawa kit) and too dark (maroonish). Actual stripes are a much brighter red. He corrected the Squadron Emblem (original is too small) that is located on the -

I went back over the panel lines with some Gunship Gray mixed with a few drops of Flat Black. After, I then sprayed another coat of Future. After it dried, temporarily installed the Air-to-Air load-out just to see what its gonna look like... Still have more pics to post but need to get ready for class now. I've gone back to get my Masters in Education and my Credential. I hope to teach US History to middle school or high school some day soon! Till then....enjoy. Dan
