  1. This is probably a dumb question... but here goes. Does anyone ever sign completed models somewhere hidden but still visible if you look hard enough? I know many of us don't hand build them, but rather we build kits. Regardless, I consider what we do as an art. The work I see on this and other forums truly is breathtaking. Are there famous modelers that are well enough know to where their work could be worth something?

    Just curious.

  2. Hi all.

I am building a Revell 1968 Volkswagen Beetle for a friend. I was given photos of it as a reference. It was a gloss kind of mint color. I am about 60% through and got to the body coat... I searched and searched and the only thing I could find reasonably close was Tamiya Color PS-54 (I hate spray cans, I try to use my airbrush whenever possible). I sprayed the body inside and out and it is as I feared, just too dark. The model owner will understand and not bark, but I would like to try something. Is there any kind of trick to lighten up a coat like that?

Also, some of the coat on the top of the body (roof) is a little grainy. What is the best bet to smooth that out? Sand and respray? Or just spray over it?

    Thanks.

  3. @11bee Finished! I have attached the link to Imagepost. I admit I over-weathered it... pictures of that period in the war (1945) show allied planes as not nearly so beat up. But this was a proof of concept build. You can’t see them, but I scratch built the seatbelts. I had some real issues with the wings on the trumpeter kit. It is a great kit but the hinges are really flimsy. I’m giving this one to a family friend that recently bought me a set of WWII history books. I know it doesn’t compare with the other models posted on here, but for my abilities I think it looks alright.

  4. Well I’ve gone and done it. I glued the wing hinges on the trumpeter model together so they’re not moveable. While this isn’t a deal killer, I was really looking to have it folded. Don’t ask how it happened. Any ideas? I’m lost. Does anyone sell 1:32 scale Corsair wing hinges?

  6. Ok, question... fading the paint... I want to give the paint scheme and decals an overall “faded” look. I read that you can lightly wet down a model, sprinkle it liberally with rock salt, then spray a “filter layer” lightly over that. Brush away the salt when it dries and it gives a faded look. Has anyone tried this? Is there a better way?

  8. Thank you everyone! I appreciate the help! The technique worked well and I’m surprised at how the multiple layers of paint and hairspray didnt “flood out” the panel lines. I’m not done yet, but here’s a pic of my progress:

(and yes I know it’s far from perfect. I had a hell of a time with the decals cracking and breaking and the air intakes on the wing roots fit terribly. I’m horrible with filler putty although this pic doesn’t show it)

  9. Morning!

So I am not a newb but I am no expert in model building either. I am trying a new technique on my Trumpeter 1/32 F4U-1D... hairspray technique. I am going for a well-used and weathered look in the Pacific.

I work primarily with an airbrush and acrylic paints.

I primed the model in black, then went over with aluminum in some places and interior green in others. Here was my plan moving forward:

Hairspray over the aluminum and interior green -> then white coat and black on panel lines -> then thinned top coats so the panel lines show through.

I would then go back with a toothbrush and water on the paint to show the aluminum and interior green through it all. However, this now seems like an awful lot of coats over the hairspray and that: 1) the hairspray technique may no longer work and the paint may not come off, and 2) I may lose panel line detail with all of the coats.

I want some shading though over the bird, that detail that makes the plane really POP!

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Jim

  10. I am building the USS Nimitz. It's my first vessel and I would like to make a diorama for it. A friend was on her for a couple years. I found a kit, but even it's "modern" form had A-6's and EA-6B's for the flight deck.  It would be nice to have ACTUAL modern aircraft on her. While I probably should have found a different kit, I went with the one I did because it was available. Has anyone found 1/800 scale modern jet aircraft and where I may find them? I have no idea how to scratch build. I would like to fill the deck with some Super Hornets!

    Thanks.

  11. Morning!

I have the 1:48 Revell F/A-18E and I am using the CAG decals and paint scheme from VF-14 that came with the kit. The Vertical Stabilizers on that scheme are black. So I painted them accordingly. I am now at the decal stage and am wondering what to do looking forward... I planned on using my black Tamiya wash on everything (navy gray scheme paint job on the bird), but then I have the black vertical stabs. Do I use the gray wash on them? I feel like:

    1) gray wash doesn't actually work well (maybe I just need to stir/shake up the enamel wash better)

    2) it would create issues to the eye having a black wash throughout but a gray wash on the stabs.

Here is where I am at so far:

  13. Thanks Bacon. That means a lot coming from you on the pics I uploaded on the other thread. I am improving with each model. Biggest issues tend to be seamlines, glue issues, etc. Just need to be more careful I suppose.

As for the launch bar... I would normally agree with you. HOWEVER... (of course there is a however) the former pilot I made this for got back to me and said he doesn't have the room for it. That and he remarked the quality was a bit better than he expected. So, he decided on his own initiative to contact the local navy base where he was stationed and they are taking it now. I don't mind this at all, I appreciate it. The problem is that the people that are going to see it now will notice something like a launch bar not being correct! 🙂 So, I really should try to fix it! LOL

  14. I am SOOOO close to done on my Kinetic EA-6B. During the build I decided I would make a diorama. I used the skunk model Nimitz deck kit and have it looking pretty sharp. I would upload pics but can't with the size constraints... that and my work is nowhere near everyone else's on here. However, I am happy with the results. I have one issue though, the launch bar is in the up position. In fact, there was never an option to put it "down". Now the aircraft is 90% built and painted. Any suggestions on how to go about lowering it? Should I take an exacto and somehow cut it as close to the main landing gear as possible? (Again, model is all built and painted. I don't want to really screw it up)

I have the shooter in the crouched pointing position, so to have it on the shuttle but have the launch bar up makes no sense, but I don't want to butcher my work. Anyone have suggestions?

And, I would totally upload pics if I knew how, and if you all promised not to be too harsh with your critiques. So any advice there would be welcomed on the uploading as well!

    Thanks all.
