Difference between ligth and dark ghost grey
Napalmakita replied to frankycee's topic in Jet Modeling
I asked a very similar question to my buddy who flew Harriers at the time..."what color grey do you guys use..." He said "man I don't know, the guys in the shop will use whatever paint is laying around that day". It was at that time that I laughed and vowed to never stress over getting every fs color spot on or debating what grey goes where. Especially when it comes to Navy n Marine jets..i find the more "mistakes" I make the more realistic they look -
Three tanks on a Super Hornet...common?
Napalmakita replied to strikeeagle801's topic in Jet Modeling
3 is common and from what I've seen they rarely are without one center line. -
Maybe tamiya weathering powders or metallic pigments to give a patchy/uneven weathered finish. Or perhaps spraying super thinned smoke or similar shades and a little flat coat. I use ammo paints so my approach may be different. In fact, the first idea I had was the new line of 'shaders' by Ammo, I think this is exactly the type of thing they are designed for.

I get great results with Tamiya sanding sponges..1500, 2000, 3000 and a 4000 smooth white polishing block then a dip in future. Perfectly crystal clear canopies look unrealistic to me and I'm happy with my results but if your set on the idea I've seen guys who like the Tamiya rubbing compounds.

Today is your day for good vibes..found it. I'm no expert but it looks to be all there. Chains n rollers too. It's from a previous build so it's painted desert tan n has a couple unit id markings. A couple of the shovel sections came off, just old glue, they aren't broken. Let me know where to send it and it's all yours

Thanks Darren. I spent days researching and thought I had a solid set up, but I sent 2 models to a buddy and it did not go well. Maybe I'll give it another go...I'll reach out when the time comes

I can't get past the part where you sent a model in the mail and it got there in one piece😳...and sorry about the canopy

Great Navy Hornet (and others) Weathering Ref Shot
Napalmakita replied to Collin's topic in Jet Modeling
Few years ago I was doing a Harrier for my bro. I asked a typical question you see here all the time..."is the rudder light gull grey or medium?"...something like that. He said " man, who knows..those guys just just throw on whatever can of paint they have laying around that day". I laughed to myself and since that day I have absolutely never stressed about painting Navy or Marine jets. In fact, the more "mistakes" I make the more realistic they look. -

Magnifying glass/lenses, a brand new exacto/cutting blade, tweezers, tamiya tape n a small 6x6 piece of glass. I lay a couple strips of tape onto the glass, lay the parts sprue over the tape n cut each piece..always keep a finger over the small part as you cut because it will otherwise fly across the room at near supersonic speed n into a wormhole. I keep another piece of tape, sticky side up, in case I need to place a part down. As for gluing I like the Gorilla super glue n Ammo makes a white glue for clear parts n PE that works well. I drop a Hershey kiss size drop of glue on the glass n

Small detailing (i.e. Mottling) with Mission Model Paints?
Napalmakita replied to Curt B's topic in Tools 'n' Tips
I use ammo paints so this may seem off topic but...i do a lot of close in touch up, weathering and spot detailing and find working with higher pressure in close gives much better results. I heard the sane thing about lower pressures in close but it's not been the case for me. I use an iwata hp b plus with the pressure around 20. It's taken practice to feather the trigger just right but it's become my go to and I've gotten consistent success. -
