  1. At the time that Col Hwang’s kill stars were added to 85-0100, both of the horizontal stabs were solid grey, top and bottom. Both of the stabs had been replaced with new ones and neither markings or the darker grey had been applied to them.
  2. To add more to the significance of these two kills, Captain Hwang had two MiG-29’s coming at him. He pickled two AiM-120’s off and one tracked to each of the MiG’s, taking them both out. It is the only time in the history of air warfare that one pilot scored two kills in a single engagement. Many other pilots have scored two or more kills on a single mission, but each of the kills were scored on separate engagements within that mission. Only Captain Hwang has scored two kills during one engagement, ever.
  3. 85-0100 did have two stars on it from September to November 2014. These were placed on the jet for Col Jeff Hwang’s fini flight to recognize his MiG kills in 1999. The aircraft he got the kills in, 86-0156, was also recognized on the side of 85-0100. I have photos of the stars on 85-0100 but the picture is too big to upload here. Anyone that would like closeups of them can email me at aaronj326@hotmail.com.
