Basically - how does the J model differ from the A and C models ...that is, what needs to be done to model other single seat variants?

These are the shemes proposed for the kits ... I am sure a lots of other boxings will come with time including some of the colourful ones. : ) : )
Thanks. I'm looking forward to special schemes.

... that suggests that [the slotted stab tips] could have been added, at least initially, after the introduction of the slotted stabilator increased its effectiveness and therefore the likelihood of dragging the tips.
Technically Beyond Me ... I don't know! The first E models that we had at Eglin AFB already had the tips. Could be an aerodynamic design "feature" that just serendipitously also functioned as "skids". Homestead AFB also had initial E's so maybe someone who was there can supply proper info.
Again as a short off-topic aside -- it was easy to anticipate the faster rotation, so no problem once familiar. Takeoff technique was optional -- fly it off at nose wheel liftoff speed, or use full aft stick and ease off when nose starts to rise. Since formation takeoffs were more common back then, the fly off technique was more controlled for both lead and wingman.

Does anybody know when and why the "skid" strips were added on the bottom of the stabilator tip? And whether it was a widespread modification or just on certain F-4s or services?
I can't answer the question, but know they were on new F-4E's in the 1968 time period. INTERESTING TIDBIT: At that time, the E models were undergoing Operational Test and Evaluation at Eglin AFB, and some former-model *F-4 pilots were initially "surprised" at the effectiveness of the slotted stab in pushing the tail down to raise the nose.

I will have an open electronics bay hatch, and an open hydraulic hatch that shows a bit of the engine.
Rob,
Who makes the resin pieces you are using?

Outstanding details -- thanks, as usual, Gregg.
Interesting to visually compare the beautiful Hornet to the ugly little whatchamacall it.

Now back on topic....
Although it bothers you (for whatever technical/moral reason), I certainly appreciate your "going off topic" since you always add valuable info to any subject!
Thanks.

If you look below the pilot images you should be able to see 4 links, one of them is to the web shop.
Try this link, Jack.

Thanks, Rich. Great site that I visit often. He has a really detailed collection of downloadable 3D parts for various airplanes, including the Phantom.

A common mistake of kit designers is to misinterpret plans, in this case not taking into account the effect of anhedral.
Thanks, Rich. What is the source of the diagram?

But it looks like the paint scheme is all dark gray. What a shame ... .
Well, I didn't make it to Jasper, but sounds like Vince may be able to get up there for some better photos.

They would stop about 200yards from us while doing their last minute checks before turning on to the runway ( After a wave from us ) and then blasting off down the runway . . . happy days.
I think a lot of us can relate to that joy.

I thought the same, but some of the pictures show a demarcation. Will be interesting to see. I may take a short diversion and pass by there Saturday, so will take a picture if I do.

I've did it with 2 1/35 Dragon kits years ago, that were "missing" parts
Scamming is nothing to be proud of -- makes it harder/more expensive for honest folks to get replacement parts.

Have a look at the instructions from Fundekals F-4 stencils release.
To make that a little easier , here's a link to a great review that has a link to the outstanding Funderkals site, which has this listing, which leads to this download.
Outstanding Phantom reference, as is the rest of the site.

Tamiya 1/48 F-4C/D
in Jet Modeling

I kind of like these Cam Rahn Bay 1969 markings:
Ordnance choices could be tailored to In-Country Close Air Support vice Out-of-Country Air To Air ... napalm, Snakeyes, gun pod, rockets, CBUs, 250, 500, 750 1.000 and 2,000 pounders ... and the list goes on.
Would be "nice" to see these markings (including a 557TFS Spook on the intakes) on a Tamiya F-4C !
Check out this outstanding model for some foreign F-4C markings.
