I'm retired now and would like to revisit my long-ago life in model form.

Sounds like good times in Tucson! (I spent considerable time at Davis Monthan too - with the F-4 and later the A-10).

Will be wallet time when "someone" establishes a readily available source for the DEF parts. Looks like Sprue Bros and Andy's should be leading candidates here in US, but I certainly would order where first actually available. :salute:

    Rich,

I received mine yesterday from Sprue Bros via UPS (Florida). Amazing speed from both Sprue and UPS despite the holidays and weather!!

I taped major parts together, and the fit is outstanding! Even the open panel on the left side in front of the intake closed up fairly nicely (I had misgivings when I saw test shots, but still wish Meng had molded that panel closed).

Looking forward to the E model.

I will back-date it to an early jet because that's what I worked at DM in the early to mid 80's

Looking forward to your "conversion". I know there are several others contemplating the same backdating since they can't wait for the Academy A model release.

... should I continue with the Hobby Boss kit ... ?

Yes. So much time, effort, and money apparently already invested. A model, I assume?

or should I get the new Academy kit?

Yes. Why not enjoy another Hog?. C Model.

Of course I can cut my own masks from kabuki tape, using the decals as a guide, but pre-cut masks or decals will probably be somewhat more straight…

If you'd like to cut straighter masks, I can send you a vector (svg or your choice of file type) ... or I could send you a Silhouette .studio3 file if you have access to a cutter like the Cameo or Portrait. ... or I  could snail-mail you pre-cut tape or vinyl masks -- contact me via PM if you'd like.

As an aside, not many folks (unfortunately) are aware of this excellent Scale Models Pant Masks site. Great resource for learning and also downloading masks (and more).

This whole discussion has gone completely out of proportions ... .

The views/opinions of the few uber-experts here are  ... just that. But their technical expertise, I think,  has to be admired and applauded,

The person who I think deserves the most applause, however, is Raymond. He's developed a great new kit of a challenging subject (in light of all the various models, blocks, modifications, as well as country specific features, support equipment, and armament).  He has graciously addressed the criticism as well as the praise ... and he is obviously receptive to the suggestions offered in this thread. I don't see other manufacturers participate with us like he does, especially at his level.

  7. For "us" 1/72 modelers, Hobby 2000 has reissued the excellent Fujimi Skyhawks, including the B and C as well as other.  Outstanding packaging and Cartograf decals.

Available at a very affordable price and great service from here!

What's wrong with their F-4 wing tanks?  Asking for a friend...

Front section is too straight, too pointed, and too short.

Note for the extra-detailers: The "FINEMOLDS CORRECTED"tank in the graphic above is just OK ... but still not curved enough. However, it's the best that can be done without adding putty. I use the Monogram tanks since I have "a few".

One thing many here seem to forget is the fact the modelers that care about such details make up a very, very, very small percentage of the modeling community as a whole.

    Amen.

But it is impressive that the small percentage has such extremely detailed knowledge, and more so that they can keep it all straight between/among  models.
