  1. That Lynx is really cool! I've been thinking about doing the Portuguese aircraft, but in the earlier OD over Light Blue scheme that I saw in Ovar, Portugal in the late 70s.
  2. Wow! That sure is a beauty, Ramon! I'd be proud to have that on my shelf. I'm sure the person you've built it for will be amazed when he sees it!
  3. It's hard to say. For the most part any response would be pure speculation, anybody that knows probably isn't saying.
  4. If the hubs work for you, you may be able to just sand away the side bulges on the TD tires and get them to a more suitable look. Although, you may still have the "too large" flat spot...
  5. Are those the Hawk kit decals? I wonder if there's been any quality aftermarket versions done in 1/48 of this aircraft? I don't see many (any?) 1/48 kits with Philippine AF markings.
  6. To be fair, the Testors/Hawk kit has the same style of door. In my kit, you get decals to represent the windows on the lower part of the door. Of course it doesn't show in this photo, but this is the kit that I have:
  7. The tan on the radome wasn't paint as we think of it. It was actually a rubberized coating, when you pushed on it, you could actually feel it give a tiny bit. You could see some difference in tonal qualities from aircraft to aircraft, but there was a standard color. Modelmaster makes/made a pretty good Radome Tan (FS 33613 IIRC).
  8. If you think about the anti-corrosion efforts needed in a naval environment, you can understand why the Naval aircraft had tougher finishes than the JAAF aircraft.
  9. I've read that in many cases, the Aires cockpit sets (to be charitable) are often difficult to get into the kits they were designed for. I still wonder if anybody there has actually tried to assemble and fit those resin sets they make...

    MPC 1/72 B 29

If the boy isn't a dedicated model builder, I'm sure he won't be worried about the inaccuracies or lack of detail, I'll bet he just enjoys having it on his shelf once done. Remember where we were as model builders when we were kids? Depending on his age and experience, though, the B-29 may not be the best choice. If he's got a few models under his belt, then fine, but I wouldn't give it to him as one of his first models.
  11. You're off to a great start, Lisa. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.
  12. IIRC, the Fuji kit was also released by Entex.
  13. A few nits... The Red and Yellow thing hanging under the starboard stub wing is the towed MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detector) "Bird." It's trailed out behind the aircraft to get it out of the magnetic influence of the helicopter itself then is used to detect magnetic disturbances caused by the distortions in the Earth's magnetic field caused by the movement through said field by a large metallic object (such as a submarine). Dipping SONAR isn't a buoy, it's attached to a cable reel and lowered to a particular depth and then used to listen (passive) for a sub or to "ping" (Active)
  14. Is Lifelike the only ones that will work? Maybe another sheet has the same thing? Perhaps a photo/scan of the offending part of the sheet or instructions might be helpful.
  15. IRT to the OP, Academy did get the color call outs correct, but as OCD pointed out, there are color variations.
  16. I was hoping they would do one of these. Actually, I was hoping Airfix would do one, but that's ok. Looking forward to this. Hopefully they'll do the British version as well.
  17. Yeah, but those guys (especially the PJs) did some amazing work in some really appalling weather. I remember seeing video of them rescuing a guy from a ship (fishing or freighter, I can't recall) with like 20-30 foot seas. Yikes, better them than me! IIRC they also had to refuel on the way out AND on the way back! Here's one of your old birds: Here's more pics if you're interested: http://s20.photobucket.com/user/DDonSS3/library/HH-60G Pave Hawk
  18. The first time I closed the bomb bay doors on a P-3, I looked down at the console, located the switch and closed the doors. I looked out of the cockpit and my safety observer had disappeared! You can imagine the thought going through my head! Thankfully, after the doors closed he hadvjust gone aft and was finishing his preflight.
  19. More opportunities for aftermarket manufacturers.
  20. AdmiralCAG, I made on deployment with VP-23 in the mid-late 80s, then I was stationed at COMFAIRKEF from late 92 until the middle of 95.
  21. Some detail shots of a 57th FIS F-15D. It.may give you some details for the CFTs: http://s20.photobucket.com/user/DDonSS3/library/F-15C Eagle
  22. I agree with you, about FS as not necessarily being the "be all and end all" for colors. I didn't realize they were hand mixed and that you would mix things "off" on purpose. I just wanted to provide the OP a shot that showed that the low contrast wasn't necessarily wrong.
  23. As it hasn't been released yet, I wouldn't expect much info on kit quality yet.
