Hello all

 

A little more progress. The yellow 4 decals are on, HGW wet transfers, great stuff! So now the question is, mottling or not?  The Eduard E-4 has it's main paint coat applied, next are the decals. The different shades of RLM 65 show here, the lighter one was mixed based on a Revell RLM65 enamel paint, the darker one is Gunze Mr. Color Laquer paint. RLM02 and RLM71 in both cases are MRP.

[BoB Bf109-E Experts please]

While I wait for the yellow 14 decal to arrive, to get the required yellow 4 with black outlines, some other decals came in. So the 2nd 109E I have on the bench, an Eduard E-4, bought as a E-7 WE edition years ago, receives some attention...

Those JG 5 birds I have to look up! That sounds like a cool variation. Just as odd as -E birds with Erla canopies...

I am limited to an E-3 right now. I do have another 109 in the making which will be an E-4. This E-3 has the glas parts that came with the Zvezda F-2! I have no clue why Zvezda would supply E-3 glas parts in their -F kits but they do. Those E-3 parts are very nice where as the Airfix parts are unusable. So yes, I would like to stick to the E-3 here. I have the yellow 4 from Marseille's yellow 14. The rest so far are generic early 109 markings.

Hello all

 

Calling the Bf109-E experts for the BoB time frame. I have that 1/48 Airfix 109 E3 that I was planning on building as Ernst Arnold's yellow 12 that crash landed in the UK. I first had a profile that showed is as a E-3! After having the main paint job done I found out that his plane was actually an E-1. Since I did not want to rip the wings apart to change it back and then re-paint everything I was looking around for another subject that would fit my paint job. I did find yellow 4 of 1.JG-27 but I only have one picture of it. Is this plane known and does someone have more info about it please?

Do not compare 1/48 with 1/32...two totally different markets, it starts with the price and goes on with the space...

 

The Academy kit is not bad, I have it as well...half built so far...but it lacks in certain areas. The ZM short nose kits have a VERY glaring fault (it was corrected on the -E) and the parts layout and sprue execution are really bad! Also the ZM kit is not a -B which is very different from a -J/S.

Tamiya`s -B, I am sure, will be stepping into the traces that their fabulous Tomcat has left in the market already, it will be a million seller and worth every penny.

Why not? It will help selling even more. Since there is really no shortage in good F-4B decals I really do not care about the decal sheet. Mine might become a VF-161 bird...also very main stream! 😉

Everything has been said...Tamiya, then Monogram. Those two are the closest to the real thing in shape and form. If you go shopping for a Monogram Tomcat it is best to check online for the older kits. The older the better. I have a new(er) Revell boxing here and the molds meanwhile are clearly on the finsh line...worn out. In order to beaf up the Monogram kit a bit you could use left over parts of the Tamiya kit. I added resin wheels and Verlinden seats to my Tamiya Cat and used only half the weapons...the original parts will look very nice on a Monogram bird.

I found some VF-1 specific boxings on ebay for between $45 and $68,  which seem to be within the range of other Hasegawa Tomcats. But the prie for Hasegawa tomcats seems to vary wildly.

 

So many markings options, It looks like you could spend a lifetime building Tomcats and never get to them all.

Be careful with the original Hasegawa VF-1 Wolf Pack boxing...I have it as well and the decals are not usable. They have yellowed very much over time. But there are aftermarker ones available. One day I want to build a VF-1 bird of the days when they flew top cover over Saigon in 1975.

[Who has Best 1/48 Mitsubishi Zero Hasegawa or Tamiya?]

I have a Tamiya A6M5 in 1/32 and a newer mold Hasegawa (JT17) in 1/48...both built. I do not see the canopy profile of the Hasegawa one to be different from the Tamiya, apart from the size. I understand that both companies have an old and a new mold version out there, new in Hasegawa's case means late 80ties? I also understand that the new 2006(?) mold from Tamiya is a scaled down 32scale kit? I will know once my ordered one arrives. All in all I can say that the newer mold Hasegawa, the A6M3 (JT17) in my case, is a beautiful little kit that with a bit of care builds into a Zero that looks everything as good as the larger Tamiya one with the bare eye…and it builds fast. The prices for Hasegawa here in Germany are unfortunately rather high, hence I try to stick to E-bay and the 2nd hand market when going shopping that brand.

Joinig in here now as well...

I watched the "Zero" movie on Amazon last night...then started looking for a 1/48 model and found the Tamiya limited Edition with the movie decals...ordered! ;-)

Started reading on Hasegawa's earlier models and hence ordered on of those...

I have built the 1/32 Tamiya Zero when it first came out...OOB...and it was a pure pleasure and an eye opener back then but I have not build a Zero ever since...so now it will happen!

Looking at the first picture and following the panel line just below the wing bags backwards it looks ok...Towards the exausts it looks like some rather heavy sanding was done. Is there anybody in Telford who can get to that model and take better pictures without all the shadows? Also it would be nice to hear if the model on show is made from an/the injection mold or maybe just a sanded down 3D print? A couple of pages back there was a picture of the upper fuselage part before the wing bags were put on and without that primer cover...there I think the curve looked ok. 

@AMK...if you really have a model already, why not sending test samples to people like Brian from "Fightettown" , Darren Roberts or Brett Green from Hyperscale to review it?

I can only second what the two guys in front of me said...the general shape and measurements are key, details are very nice but can also be added by the modeller to a certain extend. Speaking of the ZM Phantom...now that Hypersonic has a fuselage fixing set it will be a very nice bird once completed...

[late 109G-10 Regensburg decals 1/48?]

Hello all

 

I currently have a couple of BF109s in the making. F4 yellow 14 is getting decaled already but my very old Hasegawa G-10 is stalled since I do not have fitting decals. The kit decals from 1999 are not usable any more, they turned very yellow...apart from being super thick and the white 44 not being a G-10 .

I also have the latest release of the Revell G-10, bought it for the decals alone, but those it turnes out are for a Erla G-10 which,  as we all know, has a completely different engine cowling and oil cooler. Erla's also seem to have had (mostly/all?) the smaller wheels and wing buldges. So I am now looking for decals for this kit. I so far only found "Rosemarie" decals, a bird that was documenetd when it landed at Neubiberg in May45. Does anybody have more suggestions on where to get decals for a Regensburg G-10 with the larger wheels? My G-10 kit also does NOT have the battery box behind the pilot's head!

PS: The Eduard kit has very nice decals...all for planes with the earlier wheels/wings 😞

[Lifelike decals...tips please]

Hello all

 

I just started decaling my BF109F-4 with Lifelike decals and I ran into issues right away. The decals seem to have the strongest glue I have ever whitnessed. I do wet the surface before I apply the decals and yet I have almost no chance to move them into position, they stick right away and I already ruined one of the big wing crosses! Has anybody experienced this as well? Any tips on how to avoid this. The model surface was glossed wit Tamiya X-22 to a mirror like finish.
