  1. Hello again Today I took a closer look at the Airfix and Revell/Monogram Saturn 5 rockets. In short...both kits show their age and are really more toys then models! :-( I tried to figure out if a kit bash between the two could improve the apperance of the then combined version but it would not, The parts look alike but the measurements are too different to create a homogeneous picture in the end. So I will only plant the Skylab onto the Monogram rocket and build the Airfix one as a moon version. I do have a question on the S-II, the Airfix version shows stingers/stiffeners all
  2. I received the same answer...what a pity. :-(
  3. That's true... I have a Hobby Boss one here half build and it has been hard work so far. I was able to correct the intakes without going resin and it now looks good. The main LG legs are also too long, shortening them changes the geometry and is also time consuming. Also the external tanks sit far to far forward. Lot's of little things...fixable but time consuming. The only good thing...after the intake issue went around the globe the demand went down which pushed the price down as well. I paid 35EUR for my HB -B :-) cheers Uwe
  4. Wow...so the Shuttle seems to follow Dragon's general approach on space related stuff...stopping half way down the road. Very sad... I was in high hopes when I read you saying "5 footer" ...since in my vocabularity the "5 footer" is the holy grail, I am a Star Wars fan and the Millenium Falcon, the original, is called the "5 footer" being 5 ft in diameter. There is a second one in 32" from ESB and ROTJ but the purists concider it only 2nd class. The 5ft one from ANH is the real thing! :-) cheers Uwe
  5. Hello all What I read here does not sound too bad... Now Dragon offers this shuttle also with ET and SRBs. It then is a finished model and rather expensive. Has anybody alread yhad a close look at the tank and boosters? Are they correct? How do they compare to Airfix and Revell? thanks Uwe
  6. Looking good...so we already have a "dirty" AM wing set that might even fit Tamiya as it looks like! :-) I am looking fwd to the next steps now... cheers Uwe
  7. Hello all This Lego Saturn looks great. I have long grown out of Lego, I am 55 now, but this may be the first Lego I buy in 45 years. I remember that we had Lego as kids...and I did build Saturn 5 rockets while the TV was running and folks like Armstrong, Sheppard and Young walked the moon! Lego back then was primitiv. The most "technical" things were a 12V railroad with a black steam engine...anybody remember this? My rockets were not round, they were also not white and black but mostly red, blue and white intermixed. They really did not look like a Saturn 5 but for me they did! I
  8. Last night I pulled the trigger...32EUR +5EUR shipping, not too bad. Once it arrives I will share pics :-)
  9. Thanks for the answer... The markings I have...one set from the latest Revell Germany full stack offer and a set from Real Space. I did send a mail to the UK guy who once had photo realistic tiles on offer but I have not reveived an answer yet. No rush though, I am right now puting 0,3x0,3 and 0,2x0,2 Evergreen strips on the inter tank section, that will keep me busy for a while! :-) Since this is "only" the Revell one I am not going to invest a lot. Maybe one day I will build another one from hopefully newer molds. If only Bandai would release theirs as a kit! ;-) cheers
  10. Hello After finding and recovering my Revell Shuttle stack and after realizing that it's saveable...I obviously need decals sooner or later. Hotdog, are your decals still/yet available? thanks Uwe
  11. While waiting for my New Ware LM stuff to arrive I went to the basement and got the started Revell Shuttle out that came with the tower kit. I remenbered the really bad fit and the tons of putty required for a smoth finish. So last night I re-glued the main structure and put some more putty, now green, on. The orbiter now does not look too bad and I may carry on getting the tank and boosters up as well. This morning I called Revell Germany for decals...I will receive a new set in about 2 weeks. In the mean time...is there a tile decal sheet that can be recommened that is available? What I have
  12. New Ware is your friend here...Tom has many update kits for the Apollo/Saturn program in various scales. I have a 1/48 LM pack on order, will post pictures once it arrives... http://mek.kosmo.cz/newware/index.htm cheers Uwe
  13. Thanks a lot for the replys...I do not even have the new it yet but will order it soon. Building it will take a while anyway and I propably will not even start right away. I found this nice build up report and it also has a source mentioned for tile decals...what do you think? http://www.scalemodelnews.com/2011/04/hasegawa-space-shuttle-and-hubble-space.html cheers Uwe
  14. I can get that one for 36EUR in Germany after a bit of searching...plus shipping. Might pull the trigger on it! Looks really nice on the pictures. The doors can be fixed...now some nice tile decals would be great. cheers Uwe
  15. Hi I altered my post so it is now more obvious I opened the Revell/Monogram one...! Sorry for the confusion. The decals provided are correct...the USA and United States are all red! Decals were printed in 2014 in Italy...so I guess Cartograph.
  16. The Revell one I have is the Monogram one...molds show Monogram copy right from 1968!
  17. Ok...did cut some of the parts from the sprues of the Revell/Monogram rocket...and fixed them with tape. Then I stacked the stages on top of each other. I do like the set up of the 2nd stage...with the adapter to the 3rd being one seperate part. What on my example is f...ed up though is the connector ring between 1 and 2! Due to the limitations of injection molding this inter-stage ring is not completely cylindrical...its a touch smaller in diameter towards the 1st stage (conical) which creates a nasty step on the edge of the 1st stage! :-( Not sure yet if this can be fixed, I have to screen t
  18. Hi Pete Over here the HST shuttle is around 50EUR or so...also not too cheap. As I said, I did build one, still have it and I remember it went together well...but I have no clue how authentic it is. The bigger Revell one I do not like at all...the last one I had (still half build in the box with the tower and stuff) was a horrible fit with big gaps especilally around the cargo doors. It's basically trash...:-( The Aifix one I have not had yet. The HST is what makes the smalller one attractive :-) There is a guy in England who has tile decals in 1/200...I did send him a mail.
  19. Hello all I have a build up Hasegawa stack that I did in 85 or 86 and that had been sitting under a glas hood in my mothers office when she was still working. She worked for a rocket sientist at the German Armed Forces University for many decades... When she retired the shuttle came home. I remember it as a coming togther very nicely but can not say anything about it's accuracy. All pictuire threads here I found here have lost the pics due to the Photo Bucket issues... Now I have seen the shuttle is also availabe with a Hubble telescope...and that makes it interesting aga
  20. Hello I have been using Shapeways FED stuff for a while now on ship parts...The quality is excellent. Important on FUD and FED is to let the parts first of all sit in the sun or under a UV lamp for some hours. In a lot of cases they not not fully cured inside yet. You can see that when they change from transparent to almost white. Then I soak them in Nitro thinner...or acetone. This chews off the left over wax from the priniting process. I also prime all my parts with a laqueur primer, either Tamiya extra fine or the MRP stuff. After that painting with lacquer or arcrylics is no is
  21. Hi there Is the 1/32 story going to be continued? So very much like to see how it went on... cheers Uwe
  22. Hello again After going through Vincent's page I am for now hooked on a LEM! I broke out the previously started one of the two Monogram ones I have and dumped the parts in Drano! That took all the paint off. I have now started to correct the decent stage. Due to the limitations of injection molding in the 1970ties (the kit is from 1970) the decent stage main body is a bit conical, so smaller at the tope then at the bottom. I have now started to correct that...a lot of work. I have also ordered Tom's fantastic detail up kit. I hope it will be here by the end of the week. What h
  23. Hello all A bit further down I read that the Airfix rocket in it's new form was still not to best solution. Since I have a new Skylab version here which comes with the new Apollo stack as well I decided to go shopping for an old Monogram version to compare. I was able to get Revell's latest release of that kit with the Cartograph decals for 24EUR off Amazon! After a fist inspection I have to say the molds dated 1968 held up well! Detailing in some places seems a touch better then on Airfix. Everyting above the 3rd stage is trash obviously. The inter stage ring from the 1st to the 2
  24. Morning Pete I just found that page this morning...it's "the dog's bollocks" as the Brits would say. And having all docs in 1/24 and made for A4 format (Europe) I can print them to 50% and then get 1/48 drawings! I am sure it will take several days to study all the material on hand now! I will also check with Vincent to see if some of the 3D parts cane be shrunk to 1/48. I am really curious what kist we will see starting this year and hopefully in 2019...but I have rather little hope that a mayor manufactorer will come up with top notch "new tool" stuff. Just imgaine Tamiya do
