Getting the Italeri 1/48 AC-130U up to modern standards will involve quite a lot of scratchbuilding I think.
First you'll need to update the kit to a proper H-model which is quite a bit of work by itself. Then I think the Italeri kit doesn't have the observation window on the right side, it doesn't have most of the bumps on the outside. It doesn't have the DIRCM units for sure and the decals are not usable for a current model either as far as I know.

Um, exactly what part of the gunship kit should I be modifying/replacing to prep it up to the H model?
as for the observation window, Italeri does include it, requiring a rectangular ellipsoid (?) hole on the starboard fuselage to place the clear part for that hole...

the details in your model are so realistic that I'm using your progress pics to guide me for my 1/72 scale projects!
If I have some time, I'll post my own pics here and in the ov-10_fans group, and if you have some time, please evaluate what I'm doing.
Like you sir, I'm using lots of pics, (but from the OV-10A) that I took last year and that flight manual that I've snached form my dad :P

That's one hell of a model you've got there!!!
I've been doing the same on Academy's broncos (both A& D+)
But I'm having trouble on the D+ because I don't have any references for that horse. :lol:
As for the A, I'm using my father's flight manual and my walkaround for the refs. But I've misplaced some of the pics
