  1. You and me both. I have read such great reviews of the Academy CH-53E and it's brother, the MH-53E, I too am looking to buy one. Unfortunately for me, I can't afford to buy for another few months, maybe even then, I won't have the cash. Seems very hard for me to find even $100 for a kit these days. 😟 Gold luck in your quest, Anthony
  2. Well I think that is more of a pentagon/political program. I have always thought that the F-35 should never have moved beyond virtual reality and CAD. Many of the things that make the aircraft special, could/would have been better just to retrofit legacy aircraft, especially the "invisible aircraft" helmet system, the F-22 and F-15 could have enjoyed that nice feature. The pentagon and washington as a whole, always find ways to muck it up. The F-22 should (IMHO) have had the original order filled, preventing the double the cost per unit problem that plagues the bean counters when ever they dec
  3. Wow, that is very cool, and good photographer as well, getting the setting right for a long exposure is not an easy thing to do well, even today with instant results. I shoot lightening as a hobby, and it took me a long time to get it right. Now it is easy to fix pictures in photoshop, being a good photographer is no longer required. Thanks for the awesome picture, another one for my Mk19 (varients) file. I would still love to see nice resin door gunner set-up (Floyd, that mean you)! Anthony
  4. From what I learned in my time on active duty, two things can cause decay in the military. First, lack of funds, which we had no control over. Second, bad leadership. Apparently, I was part of a badly run battalion, which had lots of problems with personnel and equipment, but I thought at the time, that was just how things were in the Army. Once of my friends that transfered from an Airborne division, informed me that our battalion was NOT how the army was everywhere, just poorly run. I never knew how true that was, until speaking to others about their experience, and sadly, they confirmed the
  5. You got that right! I stumbled upon this site by chance via scalemates, I would have eventually found it on my own searching for tips, but I am shocked and stunned by the level of information available here, and more so, the quality of the people that make this site what it is. I am one of those peasants as well, I have only been on a couple rides in the Blackhawk, outside of that, I have zero experience with helicopters. Did have a couple 64's sneak up behind us at 20 feet, did not hear them until they were less than 300 meters to our rear, and probably because they were getting ready to land
  6. You probably have more knowledge in your little finger, than I have in my entire body. That said, what little I do know, many of the issues of not being combat ready stem from the heavy rotation that pilots and their gear have endured, forcing the Corp and the rest of the military aviation sectors to increase the flight hours allowed before retirement of an airframe. The upgrades have extended some F-18s from numbers like 7,000 hours to 10,000 hours, before the frame needs to be mothballed. Those numbers are probably off, but not by much. Then you had the budget cuts, aimed squarel
  7. That is something that makes the Marines special, they look after their own, and they appear to be the only branch, as I mentioned before, that uses their funds wisely. Two things I have learned over the years regarding history, and there is so much more I need to learn. First, no conflict is low intensity when you are the one being shot at, and the second thing I learned, every since the DoD was created, we have not fully won a war. We backed out of Korea with the war, still unresolved. We won the battles of Vietnam, but politicians and planners technically lost the war. Desert Storm was ende
  8. Seems they took the good from the Cheyenne, hopefully they learned enough to get closer to being right before they get sunk by some pencil pushers in the Pentagon. Is it me, or does it seem like the Marine Corp, which by recollection is the smallest of America's armed forces, which is why they have such a proud history and membership is considered in such high regard. Being that small, they have been forced to think about problems from a different perspective. Where the army and airforce have just thrown money at issues, the Marines have chosen to make sure every tax do
  9. That is pretty sad, considering all the information that I have found as a result of this thread. I started chasing down all the options on the table back then, and to me, the Cheyenne appeared to be a pretty capable machine. Their were glitches, like the P-hop flop, but nothing that could not be overcome. Also, the fact that the helicopter was able to cruise at speeds greater than the Apache has as its top speed, made it a nice asset to have in the area. When you need CAS, it is never "in twenty minutes", it right that very second, and minutes is usually too late. And I thought th
  10. I would have quoted the whole segment, but in the interest of saving space, just that part was selected. The entire post you made is quite interesting, until I started modeling again, I knew very little about these systems, even the modern ones, as my MOS was different, making my knowledge only glancing at best. Wonder why the 30mm wasn't chosen, would be interesting to see what drove that decision. As always, the 20mm is nice, but for the ground guys, the 30 is always better. You kill for us, preventing us from facing the big guys, so we always want you to have bigger guns and lots more ammo.
  11. Brain fart, trying to consume too much info, forgetting what I have already learned. Did you answer the other question as well, the "can you fire both systems simultaneously?", that was also a question I wanted to ask, but can't remember if I did. Old age and a LOT of pharmaceuticals make life a bit fuzzy most of the time, but it is better than being in debilitating pain constantly. Anthony
  12. With all the new info you have brought to the thread, has lead to yet another question by me. Last night I was thinking about the different configurations that have been tested/used by the AH-1. Was the M28 turret capable of carrying two of each weapon system, ie, two mini-guns or two M75 grenade launcher and does the M28 allow from firing both weapons at the same time? I realize that the combo of the 7.62 and the 40mm have two very different trajectory profiles, but a double 40 would be a very lethal combination. Looking over the M75, it is a gorgeous machine. I finally cheated a
  13. Never got to use that one, we were light, but I was around for the trash bag test, that was funny watching a guy try to hold that bag up to the turbine exhaust, lucky they had no hair to burn off anyway. Forgot about the Chem-light batteries, that was fun too. The last one, you even have me stumped, but my platoon sergent had very few laughs in him, anyone trying to get him to be involved, as the E7, would not have enjoyed his response, unless a foot in the fool was their thing.
  14. Nice, looking good. I am scared of filler, so that it pretty much going to be my rule for all my builds, as if that will be ever work. I might as well get used to filling and sanding sooner or later.
  15. Now that one I do remember, it was "operation ID" on ten year olds trying to buy Tonka Trucks before they could legally drive? No ID, NO TONKA! Right?
  16. Just one of those things, when you see it but have no clue what it means, it's jibberish. Once it is explained it almost seems obvious, like I should have known that already. I was three years old, so I have an excuse, a weak one, but dammit, I wasn't four yet! Anthony
  17. As I said, those things are a nightmare, the Bradley is much better, especially if you are driving, the turret sucks, since you are far from the center of movement, everything is amplified, but if you can see forward, at least you don't get vertigo like you can riding in the back, that is the worst place to be, even with the "suspension" it has, I never rode in the M1, but I imagine it is similar since both have the same type suspension. The M1 is remarkably silent as well, but probably nothing compared to the Stryker. Loved having green guys coming straight out of boot camp, the o
  18. I will let that guy know about the MRC contact info, maybe he is like me, relatively new to modeling and unsure of the process, I really don't know. All I do know is that I received a kit with damaged decals (just really old) by Hasegawa, I have tried to contact them from the Philippines and got nowhere. The contact information they have for my region is a dead end, the place is out of business. So, I am stuck for the moment, until I find an aftermarket set anyways. I agree, sounds strange, but what I just told Dave applies here as well. Most of you guys have been building for y
  19. As already addressed, different vendors, but if people would follow the link, then you might understand my hesitancy. This person reports that he contacted Academy as soon as he noticed the defect, and for whatever reason, Academy appears to be unwilling to assist him. If that holds true (and that is a BIG if), then I would be stuck with broken kits and no real solution to get them fixed, save buying a new kit as spares. Nobody should be put in that situation. Buying from eBay offers protection, but it does not get you the parts you may need, and if that is the case, you just waste
  20. I plan too, nobody else around here to share it with anyway. I won't be hung up on the details, whether it is the perfect example, but I do want to be close. 90% sounds like a good number, and I don't think I will go crazy over having to spend months tracking down exact photos and trying to get the color just right. If they call for FS-***** and I buy that paint, I will be happy with the outcome. Going back to the 76mm, I forgot about those rounds. I always think of the simple cartridge firing a single bullet, not a shrapnel round, nasty stuff. As for the Bradley, yes, it was a far
  21. Yeah, I have heard a lot of reports about that, so I will take precautions, that's too easy to mask up, not doing so is silly. Thanks, Anthony
  22. Looks like you dodged a bullet. My question is simply this, if I can't buy the kit at the store, and this turns out to be an issue, then sadly until further notice, I have to pass. If you can buy it from store, you can at least check the kit with the store personnel before you leave, which at this point, probably the safest way. I don't have the money anyway, so I will see how this plays out. Looks like a very nice kit though, would be a shame if this is a widespread issue. To those who have ordered already, I will cross my fingers for you. Anthony
  23. Question for you. I read today on another forum that one of the guys received his two kits. In his excitement, he of course opened them up for inspection. He says that both kits have broken forward canopies. Did you have any issue with your kit? The link to the thread is here...... https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235032041-135-bell-ah-1z-viper-by-academy-released/&tab=comments#comment-2919393 Anyway, hope your kit is not affected by this, he also stated that Academy is refusing to issue replacement parts. Bit puzzled by this turn
  24. Hey Dave, I hate to be the bearer of possible bad news. On another forum, a buyer of two kits was excited to get his new kits. Upon opening them, he found that BOTH kits have a cracked forward canopies in the exact same place. Best he can tell, it has something to do with lack of bracing, not sure what he meant by that, but you might want to check yours out. Here is the thread containing the information. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235032041-135-bell-ah-1z-viper-by-academy-released/&tab=comments#comment-2919393 I really hope
