I guarante yours will be finished before mine. Looking great. Would like a better closeup of the leading edge metal color. Looking for ideas and colors for my Big Cat, thanks.
Steve
Here you go Steve.
While I'm at it here are a couple more snaps.
I managed to get the wing decalled today so I could start weathering.
I'll leave it at this for now but I might do more when everything is assembled.
On the wingtip slime lights I used some thin black decal to make the lines.
This came from the seperation between two airframes on a 1/72nd scale Airfix kit.
The wing tip light is shaped clear sprue painted clear Humbrol green lacquer.
Back to the wheel bays next but I might just have a play with the vertical tails when I need a change of pace.
Thanks for looking, cheers.

Sah-weet!
Great contrast between the tan cammo and black scorpion. I agree with the other guys, killa work Marcel.
I hope you're able to get a snap of your two Hornets together eventually. It will be a cool comparison.
Cheers.

If it ever gets finished.....
Thanks Steve. Lovin' what you're doin' on your (even) big(ger) 'Cat
To get the bypass vents fitted I need to finish the gear bays. I thought I'd finished at least one of the gear bays but in fact it's still only half done so that was a wake up call.
Now I'm back to sticking teeny tiny bits of wire into the bays to replicate all of the full sized article's pipework. I must be bonkers though because looking ar reference photos and other people's models shows me that next to nothing will be visible....
It's eye watering stuff and hugely time consuming.
In an attempt to give my eyes a break and to feel like I'm making at least some forward progress I turned my attention to the main wings.
The leading edge is bare metal and I used three shades of acrylic metallic grey to get the effect I was looking for.
With that masked off I could apply the greys.
The underside was light grey blue, the top surface pale blue grey by Valejo with some Xtracrylics medium grey to give some tonal variance.
The next step was a little salt weathering.
This technique gives a nicely mottled result that makes for a good base for the next round of weathering using pastels.
Tomorrow I hope to gloss the wings so that I can add the decals before sealing them in and finishing the weathering. This has been alot of fun and makes a super change from the fiddly wheel bays.
More soon I hope.
Cheers.

Thanks guys.
Glad you're enjoying the progress Steve, cheers.
Hi Alexander, things are good thankyou. I hope that everything is good with you guys too.
Hi Marcel, thanks man. It's been a while has n't it?
Managed to get the bypass door actuators fitted.
The wash looks stark in this image because of the flash. It's less pronounced in daylight.
The wheelbays are calling again next. I shall have to re-visit the main gear bays before I can attach the intake trunking.
More soon.
Cheers.

Glad to see you back at it, keep up the great work.
Steve
Hi Steve, thanks man. Glad you like it. I've just spotted your big(ger) 'Cat. That is some awesome work right there. I shall be tuning in to your build from now on.
Hello Guy,
Long, long time no see...
Glad you are back to your build. I hope to see her complete in all her glory one day.
Still I hope you won't give it up for other builds. ;)/>/>
Amazing job, as always though.
Cheers and happy modeling!
Alexander
Hello my friend. Hope all is well with you and yours. Great to see you again after all this time.
I can't promise that my motivation will last through to the end of the build but I'm going to try Alexander. I've been trying to get back to this one for some time but was put off by the geometry and complexity of these bypass vents when added to the scratch built gear bay extensions and those vents alongside the forward fuselage that I made earlier. At last I decided to just get stuck in and thankfully they came together surprisingly quickly.
Today's update is similar to the last in that it details the bypass vent box but the port one this time.
There seem to be more pipes in this side than the other. In reference pics there is sealant applied to the wall where the pipes emerge. I simulated this using filler painted dark grey then dry-brushed with brown.
Finally a shot of the two together.
It's difficult to get a photo into the vents to show what can be seen but I'll keep trying. I'll probably have more success in due course when I glue the intakes together. For now, the next job will be to fabricate the rear bypass door actuator rams. These two are identical and I'll be back with pics of my attempts before long.
Cheers.

Hi Marcel,
That paint finish is sublime. Loving looking Bug.

Excellent news, Guy.
Maybe we should have a race to see who will finish first. :rolleyes:/>
:cheers:/>
John
Hi John, sounds like fun! :)
Just so long as you give me a head start..... ;)
Hi Andrew, hi Chuck, thanks for stopping by guys. It's good to have your support along the way. Not sure that I'll have anything new to offer but I'm glad of the company.
I would n't have thought I'd be rusty as I have been modelling but wow, this was a challenge.
I've almost forgotten how to add tiny details and I need to re-acquaint myself with my fine motor skills I think. Hopefully things will come back to me as we progress.
I primed the boxes after adding some more detail with foil then began to tackle the pipework and hoses.
This is the starboard box as it seemed less complicated.
I've also formulated a contingency plan in case things go pear shaped.
Let me introduce plan B:
;)
A set of resin intake covers by Quickboost. I discovered these on a recent trip to Hannants and could n't resist them. If the intakes are passable these may end up being used as window dressing/props for a diorama.
Next up, the port side vent box and the bypass door actuators.
More soon.
Cheers.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away........
Hello folk. Apologies for dredging this topic up but I've made a re-start on this build and wondered if I should update this thread?
Hello, congrats for your superb work,
I will be starting an f-14 tamiya black nights 1/32 soon and can say that your work with it is awesome, I have learnt a lot about your build,
Congrats again.
Regards
Thank you chuso25. I'm glad that this project has given you some ideas.
I'd like to see your build. Did you make a thread anywhere?
Any progress on this beauty Guy?
Jens
Hi Jens, thanks for the gentle nudge. At last I've managed to get my a55 in gear and pick this project up again.
Lol. Hi Steve, many thanks for the kind words. Apologies for the delay in responding but I'm back to it so see below for a small update.I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of this when you get back at it.
Steve
When we last saw this topic I was stumped by the auxiliary air bypass vents and their interiors. I made a start by cutting one wall to size but the geometry of the remainder had me perplexed. I could n't figure out how to create the box for the bypass vent when it was necessary to fit it around the scratch built stuff I'd already made.
After years of ideas simmering away on the back burner (including attempting to modify those beautiful Zactomodels resin parts for the Trumpeter kits) I just jumped in!
Before I knew it I had a pair of rough boxes glued together.
These are crude but provide a basis for extra detailling.
Using my preferred medium of wine bottle foil I added rivets and strengthening ribs here and there.
So I've made a (re)start. There's plenty more to do on these but at least I'm back in the saddle.
Before I go, here's a peek at where this assembly sits in the mainframe.
I hope it's not another three years before I can get back with more.......

Wow!
Hi Wasserfall, such a treat to see your big Sukhoi finished and it was worth the wait.
What an incredible result.
Even now I would think that the first photo was a real aircraft. You nailed it. The view point, perspective, lighting and backdrop are perfection and contribute to an image that is indistinguishable from the real deal. Truly inspirational.
Congratulations on turning out one of the best models I have ever seen.
Bravo.
-
Beautiful finish Marcel. This is another work of art. Great job.
Cheers.

Congratulations Chuck, it's been an epic journey. The little doohickey looks superb. Your scratch-buildign skills improve with every project.
I'm agog now waiting for the RFI pics.
Good job bro.
Cheers.

You can also see from these pics what my weathering style will be for this Hog: “Well Used but not Filthy” is the theme, because that’s what this jet really looks like in every pic I have found. I have used pastels to smudge the various panels that usually look that way and for realism, I also added some subtle circular dirt patterns around the AOA vane. {........} Rather than make all the panels lines darker so that they all show up, I just darkened the ones that show up on the real deal. The nose panel lines are real, but you rarely see them from 6 or more feet away, so I left them alone.
Superb Chuck. The circular swirls are a great touch and that's the first time I've seen anyone model them. Good stuff.
Also, you have my utmost respect for your restraint on the panel lines. Details like that make a model in my eyes.
I can't wait to see the final unveiling.
Cheers.

Great choice again Pascal! The single is 2 tone blue. Do not be fouled its just one colour of blue. The shades are this way as one area is matt while the other is more glossy. Giving 2 shades of blue. The orange is dayglow orange. For this aircraft it would be good to search prototype stuff on google like YF-15A or TF-15B.
Hi Eric, I apologise for picking you up on this but I think more research may be needed. From what I understand you are correct in that matt and gloss coats were used but they were the same shade of air superiority blue. There should be no apparent difference in the colour on a model except for the fact one is glossy and one is matt. Due to the natural soiling of an aircraft there is very little difference to be seen in photos of the full sized birds.
I do recognise that English is not your native tongue and in fact this is what you mean so apologies if I have my wires crossed.
No, the first eagles where painted in the same patern of the than later ghost greys. Only oversprayed woth either matt or gloss coats. So like the very early F-15A. Also the early A models die have other shape and size of their speedbrake. But this scale you can work that out. If not do PM me Pascal.
Again, I think more research may be warranted. From looking at books on the subject the gloss was applied in a straight line along the bottom of the fuselage and intakes and then on the undersurfaces of the wings and horizontal tails not in the Compass Ghost cammo pattern.
It is a moot point if Pascal is building the white scheme but for your own purposes (and that of other modellers building Air Auperiority blue machines) it may be worth re-visiting your reference material.

*Sigh.
Yep, you know best habu2. Thanks for putting us all straight. After all, it's not like this is just a hobby for fun and enjoyment or anything

Those all look good, but they just color the whole HUD. I thought about something that resembles data like a gun-pipper, the "ladder" for the climb gradient and so on - all the stuff you usually see when you´re a pilot looking through a HUD. And that could be done with some decals, so my thought.
HAJO
Like this. Scroll down further to see more images.
it would be unrealistic on a scale model.
Yes, but it looks good.

Liquitex also has an iridescent acrylic medium.
I would urge caution before using irridescent acrylic mediums on clear parts. Test it first. My experience is that although the carrier medium dries clear, the irridescent particles do not which leaves a "candy apple metallic" appearance.

Irridescent confetti is your friend.

Beautiful looking figures. Thank you for sharing them.
I hope the new company will consider offering ground crewman in the future.

A thing of beauty.

Beautiful paintwork Marcel. Super smooth and the colours look great. You're a man after my own heart with your weathering style. Great job, keep it up.
Cheers.

Hi Chuck,
Superb work on the ordnance so far. I don't think I can remember seeing a crisper, sharper AIM-9 anywhere. Combine the awesome skills of Alexander Rogal and Chris Wilson with the meticulous attention to detail of one of the world's top scale plastic modellers and bingo,......true modelling magic!
The best I've seen.
Great work, keep it up.
Cheers,

Hi Jesse,
Long time, no see.
How'd this build end up? Did you finish your big Eagle?
Cheers.
-
Hi Marv,
Sorry I'm late to the party as usual.
Very nice work on your model. The head piece that you chose reminds me of the ABC wrrior from Stallone's Judge Dredd.
How big is this model compared to a dreadnought?
Cheers.

Beautiful Flanker Dieter. Great job on getting all of the little details correct. She looks splendid.
1/32 Griffon Spitfire FINALLY FINISHED!!

It looks like all of your hard work eventually paid off Collin.
Lovely looking Spit.
Good job.
