  1. Hey Boom-

A little off topic, but what's the deal with the F-105 and TA-4J on the line at 175th Wing-you guys going retro or what or I get it-providing the HAWGS with targets to hit priot to landing  I know they have to be musuem pieces from across the airfield, but what gives, surely if you guys are having an open house you can call on some fellow guard units to bring down an F-16 or two :D

We Brought them up for Family day. Just to give some elso to look at.

By the Way those inlet rings rivets aren't a problem any more. there is a new ring with a different spring mechanism for lack of a better term and there aint amymore rivets. Also those tabs went on the hog over 20+ years ago. But I Have read reports that some doors have come loose and did jam in the outer doors. evidentally you need top actually install the tabs for them to work!!

And as far as seeing new nacelles,, don't wait for it the re-engineing program got its funding cut!!!

And to Rips original message after working on them for a month there is no easily identifible ways to tell an "A" model from a "C" model. There are some differences on the access panels on some of the weapons pylons, and you may be able to look at the coaming and see that the side IP glare shields have been removed, and the "hump" in the IP coaming is slightly bigger and symetrical to accomidate the 2 new MFCD's.

    Hope that helps.

  2. Dave, would you know to what the following wording might refer on the UNDERSIDE of the aircraft:

WARNING. Stay clear of control surfaces when hydraulic pressure is applied.

I have seen this wording on the topside of flaperons, but is it also applied to underside?

    Thanks for any info.

    John

Usually that type of warning is in the Technical Order, Job Guide, NavAir or whatever the services call there applicable maintainence manuals. Usually its in bold letters!!

  3. Hi All I was at Nellis for the last month working on the A-10C Test program and of course I had to go to the threat museum!!! Any ways they have added a couple of weapons to the Fulcrum on display so I took some shots for us modellers. Hope you like them.

First is the R-73 mounted on the MiG-29

    mig29r73.jpg

Next is the front of the missile I found the small mass balances very interesting.

    r73front.jpg

Now the rear showing the thrust vectoring mechanism. I geuss the red thing are to prevent the "ailerons" from drooping?

    r73rear.jpg

Now a overall shot of an R-27 (AA-10) I found it interesting that the fins are unpainted metal rather than black as I and other folks have painted them on our models :worship:

Hope you enjoy! I have some shots of the interior of the Fulcrum if your interested.

  4. O/T but does the AF still have Gunsmoke?

Nope, Although they did do a william tell a while ago. The Old Gunsmoke put on heck of a drain on a squadrons budget, A/C utilzation (inspection flow, time changes, etc). When I did it in 1985 and 1991 it was a real circus, but I was never more proud when we won the overall top team in 1991.

On a side bar it was funny how the USAF changed the rules when a ANG A-10 won the competition ;)

To be honest with todays Op's Tempo and limited budget I don't see many competitions in the near future, jusy my 2 cents worth.

  5. More Pic's!!! I will probably be Crewing 704 when I go to Nellis Next week or whatever they want me to do!! I will be working for a AD duty AMU with a ANG Chief (Mich) and a ANG SPO and Maint Officer (MD)

Who knows what will happen I know the AD kids will probably have a heart attack when they see Myself and my buddy (who is close to retirement), both E-7's crewin jets!!

  6. Well I wish I was there, but I sent my jet instead! I am sorry it was so dirty, but a dirty hog is a flying hog, and she has been a Flying hog this past month!!!

Take care Rip and Go Beav, Murph, Fins and Metro!!!!

    (My squadrons competitors)

  7. I got a kick out of reading this thread!!! One reason I think a lot of people like the turkey is the myriad of color schemes that it has worn. Its kinda like the Bf-109 for the WWII guys it has a certain "Something" about it!!

I really think the F-15 is a better fighter but (No offense Murph) its a boring looking jet. While the Tomcat has personality oozing out of it,, and usually a bunch of hydraulic fluid also!

Well thats my 2 cents in this discussion, I think its just one of those "classics" of the modern era for various reasons and people like to model it!

I know I do. I am just glad I don't work on the real thing!!!!!

  8. Hey Boom - I knew you'd reply! How are things in Raven City?

Do you know of anyone on the inside that might be tracking the mods by tail number?

I shot a pristine Hog at DM the other day, just out of depot - Really fresh paint - no wing or squadron markings, and it took off solo. I thought I may have spotted my first C model at DM. However, it was clean. No load outs on any station. It was probably one of the A models just back from depot after Phase.

Thanks to all for the replys - you confirmed what I thought was the Hog C situation.

    ATB -

    - Rip -

Things are cool, rather cold actually this past week a lot of wind 30 kts sustained

I will let you know when I get to nellis.

Probably ajet from depot with a fresh paint job???

  9. I will let you know in a few weeks. I will be TDY to Nellis for a month to crew the jets in the "C" model test program. One way you can telll, is if its carrying a Litening or a Sniper pod it will be mounted on station 10 rather than Station 9. This allows us our othe Maverick capable station back. I understand there is another antenna biut I am not sure on that (But I will be shortly!! <_< )

  10. I was wondering the same thing: could it be the refuelling probe and tailplane of another Intruder in trail?

I am no Intruder expert but it sure looks like a RAT (Ram Air Turbine). I wonder why it is deployed???

  11. Neat. A good idea whose time had come, um, about 3 years ago. Mr. Hull will be selling a truckload of these, I wish I had the skill and time to do these a couple years ago. I guess the next step will be an updated A-10 armament set (AIM-9 DRA, a couple LAU-131 pods, an AN/ALQ-131, COMET pod,LAU-117 and maybe a LITENING).

Well yep he's working on a DRA, I hope someone is doing a LAU-131 pod. Dave Roof is doing the LAU-117 rails and I haven't seen a COMET pod on a operational hog yet ( They may be out there but I haven't seen one) The ALQ-131 is availble in a Hasegawa weapons set?? And the L2 Pod is in the Hasegawa Harrier II kit.

At least there going to be availible!!!

  12. Hi All I was able to help out Shawn Hull wih some detail shots of the A-10. I just recieved a preview kit of the update set. Here it is, sorry about the photo but white resin doesn't photograph well :)

    P2150087.jpg

Most of all the antennas have been cast, all the radar altimeters all the radio and IFF antennas, the total tempature probe and the Data Transfer unit and the mount. There are still some peices being made and cast, Shawn tells me that the set should be ready very shortly,

    His site is http://www.shull24.com/

    Hope you enjoy it.
