Hi Jeff Ah that I am Jeff, she's great. She even goes to some of the shows with me. I couldn't ask for better. Thanks for the comments regarding the model too.. :) Hiya Guy, Thanks so much for the comments. I do make the effort to try to make sure everything is straight and true. Nothing bugs me more than misalignment. I've got a couple of minor issues with this one even still, but I'll just leave it up to the judges to find them... Hiya Holmes. Thanks for the enthusiastic support. It helps keep me motivated. I am definately on the downhill side now. I noticed my first post on this

Thanks for the comments Mendon. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I post too much and too often about this thing... just build it and then put up pictures, but so far all of it has been positive feedback. This particular era of aircraft is one that doesn't have a huge following like WW2, Luftwaffe or modern jets, so I hope I'm not boring anyone. If I am just let me know. I'm a big boy and it won't get under my skin. The float struts are finished... thank heavens. As we are getting another sassafrassin rassin ritcin 12 inches of snow, wifey told me this morning "It's good modeling weather. You shou

Hey Pete. Wingspan is a smidge short of 13 inches Pete. It'll stand about 5 inches from the base to the top wing, once it's mounted on the beaching dolly. I am thinking of standing a figure next to it for a size reference. Yes it was quite a large airplane at the time. I haven't had much of a chance to work on it the last couple of weeks. Our car was picked as the weapon of choice for a suicidal deer a couple of weeks ago, so between car shopping, work and the crappy winter weather that seems to refuse to go away, my modeling time has been short. I have managed to geth a few things done t

Welcome to an addicting era in aviation. The color choices and way of application will vary from person to person, but here's some helpful information. Yes you are correct, they were not natural metal, but painted with aluminum lacquer for corrosion control. I have two preferences, Pactra Aerogloss Silvaire Aluminum Butyerate Dope, or Alclad Aluminum Lacquer. They are both very close in shade and hue and dry fast and hard as nails. For the wings I use Modelmaster Chrome Yellow. Xtracolor also makes a fine line of premixed early US Navy colors. Make sure you do not use Lemmon Yellow for the wi

Beautifully executed model and display of an important day Ken. Love the appearance of speed with the base, it looks very convincing. Are you bringing this to Albany in April for NOREASTCON? I look forward to seeing it in person, even though it's another reason I should leave my stuff home and not bother. Cheers Mike

Great stuff as usual Guy. If you need small diameter wire and tubing check these folks out. They ship quickly, and I do believe they will ship internationally: www.smallparts.com Check out the tubing and wire areas. I've just received a stash of .008" stainless wire, and 28 gage hypo tubing. I like their wire as it's shipped straight in tubes, rather than coiled up. No memory to fight with when you need a nice long straight piece. I'm using the stainless wire for the rigging on the Truck and it looks the bee's knees. Cheers Mike

Interesting technique you have Regev. What type of plastic is it that you are covering your balsa with? I will have to try this on a project in the future. It's coming together quite well. Cheers Mike

Un-friggen-believable my friend. I am always amazed at your attention to detail Pete. Footprints??.. Good grief I am hanging up the towel, it's all over but the shouting. Don't worry about loosing points Pete. Provide the info on your entry card with big bold red letters to the judges to make sure they actually READ it and you should be fine. Simply amazing. Cheers Mike

OK Guy, 'fess up. Somewhere deep in the dark corners of your basement you have perfected a 1:1 shrinking machine. That's a real set of afterburners you have shrunk down to 32nd scale. It's obvious to me, so quit pulling our leg and just admit it. Seriously that is some fantastic PE work. The fact you had to do it twice and they are both consistent and uniform makes it even more impressive. Cheers Mike

Thanks for the comments guys. I have no pictures, but the float jigs are redone to the correct spacing and I am commencing to do the float struts next. I'll post some shots later on when they are in place. Thanks for the comments and stay tuned Matt. I just "happen" to have a set of drawings for a Keystone Bomber. Cheers Mike

Vickers Vincent Scratch-Build In 1/72 Underway

OldMan each one gets better than the previous. This one is coming along beautifully. Cheers Mike -
OK I am changing my nik to Rumpelstiltskin. How the heck did I manage to sleep through this thread? Even though jets aren't personally "my thing", an excellent model is, and you are blowing the doors off this one Jake. I have been building in 48th scale for as long as I can remember, but as my eyesight goes and my fingers seem to get inexplicably fatter, I am leaning more and more to going at least thirtytooth scale.... for the very reason you are demonstrating here. You can pack all that neat stuff in there. I have the Airfix 24th scale Musting in the stash my wife wants me to build... (don

Ian I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your post was meant in jest... Personally I have been enjoying each step of the way on these turkey feathers. They are a complex assembly and Guy has taken the time to illustrate how they go together and it's been a huge source of information. If the post should bother anyone then I would suggest they merely skip over it and wait until it's done and let the rest of us soak up what Guy is presenting. And by the way your suggestion of writing a book is a good one. I think he should. Cheers Mike

Yeah I think I'll have it done by then Pete, but don't count yours out just yet. Mine has enough warts on it to put anyone in contention. Hopefully I will be the only one to know where they are though.. Looking spectacular as always. Send me some dimensions and I'll make a box for it. Cheers Mike

Is there such a thing as an ugly one Chappie? :o Well yeah there is come to think of it. Most of the Austro-Hungarian designs of WW1 look like the results of someone's nightmare. What a great site and awesome videos. She sure is a beauty. Nice to see her in her element too. Cheers Mike

Looks like you nailed it Pete. Matches the other markings to a "tee". See this one in April in Schenechtedy? Cheers Mike

Thanks for the comments everyone. They are appreciated. With the Forums being down for almost a week I actually had time to get some modeling done. I've got the top wing painted (Got Sunglasses?) and all struts are cut and fitted. The lower wing is secured in place, along with the lower cabane struts and rigging wires. I am using .010 stainless wire for my rigging on this one, rather than mono or elastic thread. The two front windscreens are done, I just have to make one more for the rear, and the porthole windows are in place. I've moved it from the wing fixture to the float fixture to b

What a difference some color makes. I'll never claim to be a decal expert, but I'm happy with the results. I scanned some actual color samples I sprayed with Insignia Red, White and Blue onto the white primer I sprayed the Rudder with. That gave me the RGB values for my artwork. I used Word to make my artwork, and found the correct 45 degree fonts at a free download site. I then printed them out onto white coated decal paper to get the white lettering in the red and blue fields, overcoated them with clear lacquer and applied them. They look pretty good. Because I scanned my actual paint s

Thanks Jeff, appreciate the comments. I am headed down into the cave now to give my home made decals a shot for the rudder stripes. I'll post my success later for everyone to oohhahhh at, or failure to laugh and point at..lol Cheers Mike

Pete I have no doubt you will pull it off. When it comes to paint and finish and decaling you are one of the best I've seen. Looking forward to your results. Cheers Mike

Marcin, Ron, Pete and Guy thank you for the comments. I appreciate the feedback. Wow whatta pal Guy... If it gets tot hat point you will be the first to know... however I wouldn't hold your breath. I don't think blue is your color. Well sonoffagun it looks like an airplane... sorta, if you can ignore the scaffolding around it. I transfered the airframe over to the first jig for wing alignment and to get the struts cut to length. While it was trussed up in the jig I installed the tail feathers, struts and rigging wires. I am going to deviate from my normal mono filament/elastic thread

Hiya CHris, Wonderful work you have here. Humor the ragwing guy and tell me what you use to make your masters? I'm very old school and use basswood then vacuuform, which works OK but sometimes I can't get the fidelity of detail that you are getting. A fellow club member gave me a 4 x 4 x 24 hunk of Ren-Form which I am going to try on America, but I'm still curious to know what you use. Your surfaces appear very smooth, plus you are able to scribe and rivit the master? Or do you cast a first peice then scribe and rivit the resin? Forgive me if I missed something in a previous post but I'm alwa

Looking great as usual Pete. I would also chime in on overspraying them after, I think you'll have better control. Time for another transport box soon? Cheers Mike

Geeze Louise Guy.. and I was whining about a few piddeling louvers..lol. Fantastic stuff here. Even with the two dimensional problem of PE you're making them very convincing. Well done. Glad the plug worked out for you. Cheers Mike

Hiya Guy. Wow these are really somehting. I can feel your pain regarding the outter petals, but it looks like you have come up with a good solution. Here's a suggestion to help keep them round as you glue them. Find a peice of dowel or other round object that's the same diameter of your closed petals and put it inside. Wrap a rubber band around them to clamp them to the dowel and CA away. Perhaps the missus has a broom handle hanging around that she won't notice an inch or two missing from the end..lol Awesome work on the legs. I saw the pics and thought they were of a real aircraft at first
