That would be awesome! I'm nervous about the kit decals. I'm only on the cockpit. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the "DONOT GRAB" labels. I want to space the DO and NOT from DONOT but the solid pure black is evident, even on the real one. Maybe slice it, move it and then paint the gaps pure black? Oh the first world problems!

Can't wait! I'm building the kit now, but no where ready for decals. Hopefully they will be out when I'm ready to decal it. Thanks!

@Najk Great info as always! We appreciate your knowledge. Thank you!

Wow! Impressive Swedish military resume and very detailed information! Thank you so much Najk! I had a feeling the cannon wasn't removable but this really clears it up!
I think the 4 Maverick (RB75) load is the way to go for my build. A picture I have seen with the drop tank and 4x RB75 on the inner and wing pylons helps confirm a real load. I try to be as accurate as I can. I really appreciate this. I assume the RB75 have the yellow band for the warhead and brown for the rocket motor? Do the missiles have other writing in Swedish or in English?
On a side note, I have the updated Special Hobby kit for the AJ and it's clearly an AJ with no fuselage extension or cannon fairing. It's not a 2 seater, so not an SK or anything. I'm surprised they give you the JA tail, the 4x aileron actuator fairings (I know the AJ uses 3 and a non-bolted aileron). It's like they give you almost enough to make a JA or SK but not quite. They look nice, too bad I won't use them for the AJ. The instructions show a weird mix to use the new tail even though the decals are for AJs.
Thanks again!

Hi, a latecomer to this thread...
AJS could actually carry 6 sidewinders if need be while the AJ only could carry 2 on the fuselage pylons and 2 Super Falcons on the outboard wing pylons.
The JA gunpack looks bolted on but it is in fact part of the fuselage.
Live Mavericks were white, AJ could only carry 2 on the fuselage pylons while the AJS could carry 4 on the fuselage pylons and inner wing pylons (looks rather wicked, I did that on a build)
Here is a link to my build 🙂
Thanks so much Aigore! I was following your 1/32nd Viggen and that got me really inspired! It even helped so much with paint colors and details. I appreciate it! I also found a few of your 1/48 scale Viggen builds. Thanks for the link to this one. Somehow I missed this particular build. Funny, the scheme I was thinking for the AJS was the #45 with the white boxes on top of the wings. I'll really study it!
I was thinking of Maverick's and good to know they were white. While searching, I found a photo of an AJS with 4 white Maverick's on the wings, and I agree. It does look wicked!
Thanks everyone, very helpful!

Note that Maestro's Oerlikon pack is only available in 1:72. Since Special Hobby did the Viggen family in both 1:72 and 1:48 (co-produced with Tarangus), it's not clear which scale you're working in. If 1:48, the only JA gunpacks I'm aware of are the ones in the SH/Tarangus or ESCI/Italeri kits.
I did see the Maestro gun pack while doing my searches, but also saw that was for 1/72 scale and I'm doing 1/48. Bummer. Thanks for the info though! I think I settled on an AJS. I thought about buying a cheap ESCI kit, but then was like nah! It was going to be 20 something dollars and then a bunch of work to (maybe) get it to fit on the Special Hobby.

Great info! Thank you! Either way I think it's going to be an AJ, but very cool info about the JA gun pack. I appreciate the loadout chart as well.
-
Oh that's great, thank you for the information! I had a feeling the gun was not removable, and never could find a picture of an JA without it. It seems to hard to scratch-build, so it looks like it's an AJ for me! Though I do like the "crink" in the JA vertical tail.
Ah so probably not four Sidewinders. Since the AJ is attack, what's a good air to ground load? I saw Mavericks (Swedish equivalent) could be loaded. In the mid-90s where the Mavericks white or some other color (I have seen a green-ish, but that might be inert)? Did they use GP bombs?
Thanks for your help. I'm pretty good with American aircraft, but this is a whole new area!

Hi all,
So, I normally build US Navy and Marines aircraft, but after reading about, and going down a rabbit hole for the Ukraine war, I started to get into the SAAB planes from Sweeden that were built to fight Russia (it doesn’t hurt I have had multiple Volvos over the years and a POC helmet/goggles for skiing, anyway). It’s cool that Volvo license built the engine too! I have a question on the SAAB Viggen AJ versus JA 37 planes.
I think I have a good handle on the differences between the AJ (early) and JA (late) such as the 3-4 actuators on the wing, the different tail, two vortex generator on the canards versus one, the welded single elevon, position light changes and some antenna configurations, etc. I have the Special Hobby kit that includes a lot of the parts to make either an AJ or JA even though I have the AJ version and it doesn’t mention much about the other parts, in fact, I think some of the instructions are wrong such as adding the extra flap actuator for a clearly marked AJ.I have two sets of Moose Republic decals for both the AJ and JA Viggens. I was planning on doing a leaf pile camouflage one, but I liked the large aircraft numbers in dayglow orange for a certain JA Viggen. However, there are two issues with my kit not making a JA. The first is the fuselage extension, but I feel like I could extend the kit with a sheet styrene plug.
The second is the gun pack on the bottom. It appears this is a bolt on gun similar to the Marines Harriers. My question, does the JA always carry this? Photos seem like it does as there are some antenna on it. I don’t think I could scratch build this and it seems hard to find a sprue from some other JA kit. Could I make a JA with the other mods but not the gun pack installed?
If not, there is an AJS that I like that at least lets me put the 4 Sidewinders (or the Swedish equivalent) on the wings since the AJS had some upgraded avionics. No one but me will know, but I’d like to make either a correct JA or AJ, so depending on the gun pack answer, it might force me one way.
Either way I’m excited to build a non-US aircraft in the cool (but challenging) splinter camo!
Thanks,
Dave -
Oh nice. Thanks for the info, it looks great with the extra shelves. I'm running out of floor space, so this would be easier than buying a whole new cabinet!
Happy new year! -
Great hornets! Nice Job!
Question, how did you add the extra shelves to the Detolf cabinet? I have a few cabinets but was looking for more space and like what you did. Looks like clamps on the metal rods? Where did you get the extra glass shelves? Picture frames? Thanks in advance!

Wow that's a really cool set though! Yea, I was talking about 1:48 scale Kitty Hawk kit. Sorry, I should have been more specific. Too bad, that was nice.
I'm thinking of giving Milliput a shot, since they are the plug type that I want to do, adn not the over type that I could make out of tissue. Thanks! -
Hey All,
I was going to scratch some intake covers for my Kittyhawk AH-1Z. Does anyone have any recommendations how? I was thinking either the tissue and white glue (ive done that with F-14 combing covers) or maybe some Milliput? How can I use the kit as a "mold" without Milliput sticking? Other ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Dave,
I got your turret and FMV parts. They all look great! I had sent you a pm last night, but what do you recommend for making the clear windows for the other two turret 'holes'? There is a cool reflective piece for the flir. This thing looks great! The kit part is junk!
Thanks.

Uggg! They look awesome! Thanks Dave. My ah-1z is so close to being done (just finished putting your decals on). I've never been too happy how my turret turned out and I scratched some fmv mods, but they are not as good as yours!
Just placed an order for a turret and fmv. I'll throw more money into it! Thank you!

HMLA-267; Yankee Air Pirates forever!
👍 My 5 year old daughter saw the sheet on my workbench last night and said 'ooh I like the pirate flag and little person flag'. It may have to be one of those! Thanks!

Please post or send photos when you're done, we'd love to see them! Thank you for your purchase as well!
Sure thing! It's coming along pretty well.
Any particular scheme you would vote the best? I'm having a hard time choosing, they are all great. Though I'm partial to a Pendleton cobra since my good buddy was stationed there in the early 2000s.

Dave,
I just wanted to let you know that I got your decals last night (I had pre-ordered) and they look great! I'm right at the gloss coat of my AH-1Z so perfect timing! I highly recommend! Just have to figure out which one to do! 👍
Thanks,
Dave Y.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think it mattered, but didn't realize they came two ways (or always brass but oxidized).
I have at least two sets. One Eduard EA-6B (actually the exterior, wheel bays and wing folds, so three) and another Eduard for the Harrier. All in 1/48. They all are an oxidized grayish color. I have never seen brass colored except for on ARC.
I usually use Mr. Metal Primer, but every now and then some Tamiya tape will pull up a chunk of paint. Sometimes I sand them too, and that's how I noticed the brass (in addition to online photos).
-
I figured it doesn't matter once the paint was on either. I didn't realize they came both ways. I have seen pictures of some with with the same set I have, mine is gray and theirs was yellow brass. Very strange. Thanks for the info!

Hi All,
I tried searching for this and couldn’t really find anything (I’m not the best “Googler” however), but maybe you all can help me out.
When I’m using Eduard photo-etch, mine has a grayish-silver coating. I notice often in the In Progress Builds that a lot of people applying the photo-etch have a nice brass (yellow gold) color. How do people get this color? When I sand my etch I can get the brassy color, but it’s not uniform. I tried soaking my etch in vinegar to help with paint bite, but that doesn’t take away the coating.
How do you guys do it? I see a ton of pictures of people using nice yellow brass etch. I can only get that with sanding, but you can’t get the coating off the recesses. It’s almost like it came that way.
Maybe I’m just being silly. Maybe it doesn’t matter. Let me know your thoughts!
Thanks,
Dave

Great, thanks for all of your help! I have plenty of options to try and I just PM'd Raymond.
Thanks again!

Great, thanks phantomdriver. I'll wait until the weekend to see. I assume the info@kineticmodel.com email works since I didn't get an error.
I will try Mr. Chung next week. Is there a Kinetic sub forum or do I post in Jet Modeling or send him a PM? Just trying to do the right thing.
Thanks again,
Dave

Hi All,
I have started working on a Kinetic EA-6B Prowler (the updated kit with the single piece wings that I cut into folded) and have been working on the wing sections. The other day I cut the two fuselage halves off the sprue to begin to match up the wing sections.
To my horror, I noticed some severe mold/plastic shrinkage issues. One half there is a large semi-circle of plastic missing on the football and both halves seem to have missing/shrunken plastic behind the second canopy and the other half has a broken frame near the canopy. These are definitely not shipping/packaging breaks, as plastic is just missing. I'm pretty bummed.
I was going to try to repair it, but it will be a substantial effort and I hope it comes out ok.
I also tried to contact Kinetic via their services@kineticmodel.com but I got an undeliverable message (well it was in Chinese but I had to use Google Translate to figure it out). I sent another email to info@kineticmodel.com and that seemed to go through, but that was a few days ago and I haven't heard anything.
Does anybody know the best way to contact them? If that doesn't work, I thought there used to be a site you could buy sprues from various kits. Anyone know of that? Please help if you can.
If not, hopefully my scratch building skills are up to snuff to repair the fuselage. I was going to glue in a big chunk of kit plastic and do a lot of sanding on the football and cut out the deformed rear canopy section and glue in a more square version.
Thanks so much in advance!!! :mellow:/>
